Chapter 42 - Beggar Brought Monitor Lizard to Martial Art Contest and Injured 'Hitman' Who Sued God
"Action is the cure for worries. Killing him early is the cure of later headaches."
Seizing the opportunity, Fu Tong kicked the ground while his Qi erupted. Everything around him turned into a slow motion as his 9999 agility and dexterity attributes took effect.
Long Hao stood motionless. His eyes and body couldn't follow Fu Tong's movements.
Fu Tong arrived in front of Long Hao and pushed the crowd aside. Transforming a karma coin into a spike, he lunged at the beggar.
"SCRAM!"
Before the spike could touch Long Hao's skin, a loud shout echoed in Fu Tong's mind, and the face of a dragon emerged in front of Fu Tong. The illusion generated a shockwave and knocked him backward two steps.
The bullet time effect was canceled, and Fu Tong fell to his knees. His eyes and ears were bleeding from the mysterious mind attack.
While Fu Tong was stunned, his eyes caught a ring artifact on Long Hao's finger. It was a clear jade ring, but it exuded the aura of a saint.
'Damn grandpa-in-the-ring plot armor!'
Protagonists, such as Long Hao, had various buffs and cheating abilities. In every new game, Long Hao and every protagonist always started with randomized artifacts, giving them an edge over players who had advantages in game scenario knowledge and tactics. The procedural generated items were the charm of this game, as players couldn't predict what kind of plot armor the protagonists would have in every encounter.
Among the random artifacts, the notorious items that players resented were plot-armor-typed items, such as a ring or a necklace with an overpowered grandfather trapped inside or a sentient weapon with the soul of an expert.
Unfortunately for Fu Tong, Long Hao got the grandpa-in-ring's protection. His 100 LUCK stat couldn't prevent the scripted encounter.
The crowd around Fu Tong and Long Hao dispersed and encircled them, watching the fight. They were as confused as Long Hao was about why Fu Tong suddenly appeared there with a weapon drawn.
Long Hao glared at Fu Tong and glanced at the energy spike in his hand. He rubbed the jade ring, thanking his grandfather in his mind. Stepping forward and drawing his sword, he calmly questioned Fu Tong.
"You're not a mortal. Who sent you?!"
Fu Tong raised his head, giving Long Hao a meaningful look.
Provoking Long Hao with a grandpa ring might be the wrong choice in this situation. However, as his penalty mission demanded Long Hao's death, doing it now or later would result in the same outcome.
After a short pause, Fu Tong taunted Long Hao, framing everything to the latter's nemesis.
"Long Baiqi sends his regards."
Long Baiqi was the name of Long Hao's elder brother, who had backstabed him and forced him to reincarnate.
Hearing the cursed name, Long Hao's killing intent erupted. Without hesitation, he channeled Qi to his sword and swung it.
The sword hit Fu Tong's neck, but it failed to penetrate or cut through his skin. Instead, it caused a loud metallic noise, as though the sword had chopped onto a sturdy metal plate.
Seizing the opportunity, Fu Tong grabbed Long Hao's sword by the edge and pulled him closer. Not giving up, he shoved the spike toward Long Hao's chest.
The illusion of the dragon's face emerged from Long Hao's ring again. This time, it roared and collided with Fu Tong, sending him flying backward. The energy weapon shattered. Fu Tong's muscles and internal organs were torn apart. All his bones shattered to pieces, and his eyeballs exploded.
He crashed on the dirt ground. All his limbs contorted at unnatural angles. Although the injuries seemed life-threatening, Fu Tong paced his breath and threw a thousand karma coins in the air. They transformed into energy needles and pointed at Long Hao.
Long Hao's expression changed. The mysterious dragon also warned his grandson.
"RUN! DON'T LET A SINGLE NEEDLE HIT YOU! YOU CAN'T DEFEAT THAT MAN!"
Long Hao kicked the ground and fled into the crowd, vanishing like smoke. The needles, however, were suspended in the sky as Fu Tong didn't have enough strength to move or command them to follow the protagonist.
While lying on the ground, Fu Tong's wounds mended themselves. His eyeballs were regenerated, and his internal organs were restored. His bones automatically healed and reverted to normal.
After a minute of resting, Fu Tong recovered. He rose like a terminator on a mission and looked around.
Long Hao was gone.
"Tsk!"
Fu Tong patted his clothes and massaged his newly regenerated eyes. While cursing Long Hao, he dispelled the energy needles in the sky. A thousand karma coins returned to him.
'You need to get lucky with your plot armors every time, but I only need to get lucky once. Keep running, Long Hao. If you show up in front of me again, I'll kill you.'
As it would take a while before the exam started, Fu Tong sat cross-legged, meditating with his eyes open.
—
Fu Tong was not the only one who picked a fight with another participant before the event. Some young cultivators ran into their rivals and made a commotion, throwing skills and techniques at each other.
As cruel as it was, a few cultivators suffered great injuries and were forced to retire before the exam could even start.
Several level 7 and 8 cultivators kept sneaking glances at Fu Tong, but they didn't dare to ambush him, as they had witnessed how he fully recovered from the half-dead condition in seconds.
The sun rose, and more commoners gathered around the area, hoping to take their chances as well. The skirmishes also ended, and top Qi Condensation cultivators claimed the front row of the event.
Fu Tong remained seated. He spat a depleted spirit stone from his mouth and massaged his numb tongue. Getting up, he walked to the front row while the other cultivators made way for him.
As soon as Fu Tong sat at the front of the barrier, a teenage cultivator who sat next to him started talking.
"Young Lord, you've scared the others earlier. How did you recover so fast?"
