Chapter 42 -42: Decisive Killing
Both watched Dong Mingyue go upstairs, and they followed.
Dong Mingyue knocked on the door, and Wang Bin quickly came out with a knife: “You should thank God you’re still alive, and yet you dare come back to seek death?”
Wang Bin’s mother also held an axe and followed behind: “My son worked hard to find some food, and you wasted it all. We were kind enough to spare you once, and you dared to come back?”
Dong Mingyue didn’t hesitate at all and drew her gun, loading it: “This is my house, my parents bought this place for me, you mean nothing.” Then, she aimed at Wang Bin’s head.
Wang Bin was startled, but then he laughed: “No way, Dong Mingyue, where did you get that toy gun to scare me? Come on, shoot, and if you don’t kill me, see how I’ll torture you to death.”
Saying this, Wang Bin reached out to grab Dong Mingyue’s hand.
Dong Mingyue did not hesitate, and directly pulled the trigger. The bullet struck Wang Bin’s head, though it was slightly off, causing his eyeball to burst out and blood exploded everywhere.
Wang Bin’s face twisted in disbelief and horror as he fell backward.
Wang Bin’s mother was terrified and tried to close the door, but the body of her son blocked it. She screamed in fear: “Murder, murder!”
Without hesitation, Dong Mingyue picked up Wang Bin’s knife and went inside, stabbing Wang Bin’s mother twice: “You don’t deserve to waste the bullets my best friend gave me.”
Then she bent down, made sure both were breathless, and dragged them out of the room and down the stairs.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng watched Dong Mingyue unscathed and still able to handle the corpses, and truly felt relieved, quietly leaving.
On their way back, they saw a high billboard advertising a cake shop’s Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake presale.
Only then did Gu Pan remember, it had been several days since the Mid-Autumn Festival, time flies, and the apocalypse has been here for a while now.
They had to pass by Guo Gang’s house on their way back, so they decided to swing by.
At Guo Gang’s door, Lu Ruisheng knocked.
Guo Gang came out to greet them, delighted: “I was planning to visit you in the next few days if you didn’t show up, come in and let’s talk.”
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng entered, and Guo Gang quickly closed the door behind them.
Their house was quite warm, with a fire basin on the floor and lots of wood piled in the living room.
After sitting down, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng took off their hats and gloves, placing them beside them.
Guo Gang’s wife, Zhang Xiumin, brought them some hot water: “Have some hot water, fortunately, we have elderly and children at home, so there’s never a shortage of hot water even in cold weather, we’re pretty lucky.
They accepted the water, thanking Zhang Xiumin: “Thank you, sister-in-law.”
Guo Gang, with a smile on his face, said to Lu Ruisheng: “The day before yesterday, I found a cellar nearby, just behind the kitchen of a restaurant. The kitchen has been raided many times, but no one discovered this cellar. It’s filled with cabbage, potatoes, and radishes that aren’t frozen. I was just thinking about how to deliver them to you without them getting frozen, and you’ve arrived.”
Lu Ruisheng responded: “We still have food for now. If the cellar can remain hidden, then let’s not take everything out since it would freeze once outside. Having access to fresh vegetables from the cellar continuously would be beneficial.”
Guo Gang replied: “That’s what I thought too, but I am indeed worried about it being discovered.”
Gu Pan thought for a moment and said, “Let’s block the entrance with two corpses. Usually, when people see dead bodies, they won’t go inside.”
Guo Gang slapped his thigh and stood up, “That’s a great idea! Sister-in-law has a smart brain. Let’s take Ruisheng with me to set up a fake scene, and then we’ll bring back some vegetables for you guys to take back.”
Gu Pan did not object, because both Lu Ruisheng and Guo Gang were strong fighters, so there was no need to worry, “Okay, then I’ll stay here and chat with my sister-in-law.”
Lu Ruisheng got up, put on his hat and gloves, and followed Guo Gang out.
Zhang Xiumin started chatting with Gu Pan about family matters, talking about some things that happened after the apocalypse, “Thankfully, you all provided those supplies, and told us to search for resources right away; that’s how we managed to have enough food and drink during the apocalypse.”
Gu Pan smiled and said, “Brother Guo and Ruisheng are brothers; it’s all supposed to be this way.” She could not say that in your previous life, you helped us by saving food from your own mouths, which was a great kindness.
Zhang Xiumin was still very grateful to Gu Pan, “At this time, even blood brothers might turn against each other over a mouthful of food. We can never forget the kindness you’ve shown us.”
Just then, Guo Gang’s four-year-old daughter Meng Meng ran out from the bedroom. She was a bit shy upon seeing Gu Pan and hid behind Zhang Xiumin, as the child had not seen strangers for a long time due to the apocalypse and had become introverted.
Zhang Xiumin told Gu Pan, “My mother-in-law has not been feeling well recently. She just took her medicine and fell asleep. We don’t know how long the medicine will last. The child is fine, though, having enough to eat and drink, just a bit timid.”
Gu Pan understood, “Such environments are a test for both the elderly and children.” Saying this, she stood up, opened the bag behind her, and took out a bag of candy, handing it to the child, “Meng Meng, see what auntie has.”
Meng Meng saw the pretty candies and was tempted but dared not come forward, only looking at Zhang Xiumin.
Zhang Xiumin smiled and patted her daughter’s little bottom, “Go ahead, take it. Auntie is family, you can take things from auntie.”
Meng Meng then bravely stepped forward to take the candy, whispering to Gu Pan, “Thank you, auntie.”
Gu Pan saw the child’s lovable manner and also liked her, so she took out some snacks, several boxes of milk powder, and some elderly oatmeal from her bag and placed them on the table.
Of course, all of these were taken from the “Space,” her bag looked bulky behind her, but it was stuff they commonly used. Coming here was a spur-of-the-moment decision; she naturally didn’t prepare anything special, but her “Space” lacked nothing.
Seeing these items, Zhang Xiumin felt a bit embarrassed, “Sister-in-law, don’t give us everything; you all need to keep some for yourselves. In these times, it’s good to save more and spread them around—never put all your things in one place.”
Gu Pan nodded, “Yeah, we have other places to store things. Don’t worry, sister-in-law, we have enough. I brought these especially for the children and the elderly; don’t be shy.”
Meng Meng looked at the items on the table, her eyes full of joy, “Auntie is amazing, her bag has everything.”
To a child, being able to pull tasty things out of a bag was indeed impressive.
But the child’s words also reflected another side of Gu Pan; her bag indeed had everything. Whenever she wanted to take something out, even a yacht could be taken out.
She smiled and gently ruffled Meng Meng’s head, “How about next time auntie brings more nice things for Meng Meng?”
Meng Meng happily nodded, “Then come early, auntie.”
Zhang Xiumin gently scolded her daughter, “Children shouldn’t be greedy. Remember your manners.”
Gu Pan smiled and said to Zhang Xiumin, “Sister-in-law, we’re all family here. Don’t make the kids treat us like strangers.”
Zhang Xiumin also smiled, “Yes, no strangers here. At this time, having a relative who genuinely talks and gets along with you, it truly makes my heart happy.”
As she spoke, Zhang Xiumin’s tears started to flow. She was initially smiling, but as she smiled, she felt mixed emotions in her heart.
