Chapter 47: Chapter 47 The Unreasonable Woman
Chapter 47 -47 The Unreasonable Woman
The couple talked as they walked to a secluded area. Gu Pan took out a snowmobile, and they rode it home. 𝔫𝖔𝖛𝖕𝔲𝔟.𝔠𝖔𝖒
Now, in the morning, Gu Pan’s small team was free to do as they liked. They could practice self-defense or shooting, focusing on their weaker areas. There were no restrictions, and they could go wherever they wanted as long as it was safe.
When they arrived at the entrance of the community, they saw Cheng Yang being hassled by a woman. They were arguing. After all, he was one of their own; seeing him in trouble, they felt obliged to step in and see what was going on.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng walked over.
As they approached, they heard the woman say to Cheng Yang, “Cheng Yang, even if I was wrong in the past, even if I betrayed you, you are a man. Can’t you forgive me just once? I haven’t always treated you badly. You can’t be so ungrateful.”
Gu Pan was dumbfounded. What kind of logic was this? Did this woman have a brain full of shit? What was she thinking?
“It’s not like Cheng Yang is your dad. Why should he forgive you? Even if he were your dad, he wouldn’t have to forgive everything, right? If your brain’s waterlogged, go drain it.” Gu Pan couldn’t hold back and stepped forward to speak.
The woman, upon hearing this, played the victim. “You’re a woman too. How can you say such things to me? Do you know how hard it is for a woman to survive now? I’m just looking for someone to depend on. Did I do something wrong?”
Gu Pan looked up and breathed in some fresh air—I mean, she had never encountered such a person even before the apocalypse, and now here she was, seeing one.
Before she could respond, Lu Ruisheng interjected, “My wife is a woman, but she doesn’t need to depend on anyone. She’s right in what she’s saying.”
The woman, hearing Lu Ruisheng also speak in this manner, became frantic. “You, acting like a lickspittle, will have no good ending.”
Unable to hold back any longer, Gu Pan retorted, “Sister, if my husband defending his wife makes him a lickspittle, and you betraying Cheng Yang, then expecting him to deal with you after he doesn’t want to, that makes him ungrateful? What are your standards? Is it only right if it’s advantageous to you, and wrong if it’s beneficial to others?”
Honestly, this was the first time Gu Pan encountered such an oddity and couldn’t help but chat a bit more to draw some amusement from the apocalypse.
The woman, looking at Gu Pan, started to fake sob. Clearly, she wasn’t really crying, because that would freeze her face.
While pretending to cry, she looked pitifully at Cheng Yang, “How can this sister twist my words like this? Please, don’t listen to her, she’s too scheming.”
Before the woman could finish, Cheng Yang forcefully poked her shoulder blade without showing any mercy, making her stagger. “You think you can slander my sister? Don’t force me to hit a woman. Mo Xiaoqian, I beg you, just keep out of my sight, alright? My stomach churns just seeing you. How could I have ever fancied you before? Wait, you used to put on quite an act, didn’t you? Almost like a real person.”
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Seriously, Cheng Yang really was quite funny.
The woman took a few steps back, unable to maintain her balance, and fell. Confused, she looked at Cheng Yang, “You hit me? Even my dad has never hit me. How dare you?”
Cheng Yang snapped at her, “Your dad doesn’t know how to discipline; no wonder you turned out so useless. I really was blind to have seen anything in you. Was I looking with my eyes on backward? If you come near me again, I’m telling you, I’ll kill you.” Saying this, he pulled out a gun.
Seeing the gun, the woman didn’t run away. Instead, she knelt in front of Cheng Yang, “I knew you were capable—you have a gun. If I stick with you, you’ll protect me, right?”
Gu Pan was completely baffled. What? Was this woman insane?
Cheng Yang loaded his gun and pressed it to the woman’s head. “Three seconds to get out, or I’ll make sure you never have to walk again.”
Hearing the sound of the gun being cocked, the woman finally got scared. After all, if the gun went off, she would be done for. She scrambled away, rolling and crawling.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng watched Cheng Yang, struggling to contain their laughter.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Cheng Yang explained to them, “Bro, sis, you don’t know how good she was at pretending. In order to get close to me, she staged coincidental meetings and bribed people around me, crafting a persona of a poor yet ambitious and filial individual. I really did feel a protective impulse toward her at first. But then, a few days later, she met someone richer through me and ran off with him, thinking I was useless. Now, with her act exposed in front of me, she couldn’t keep up her facade anymore, resulting in this farce. I really made you witness a spectacle.”
Gu Pan, trying not to laugh, asked Cheng Yang, “Need some consolation?”
Cheng Yang shook his head, “Sis, don’t make fun of me.”
Gu Pan said, “This is actually quite interesting for my first time seeing this—look, you are still young, this is nothing…”
“Look, sis, if you don’t really want to console me, then don’t. If you want to laugh, just laugh.” Cheng Yang was also finding it hard not to laugh himself.
Unable to hold back any longer, Gu Pan burst out laughing, and Lu Ruisheng joined in.
Cheng Yang ended up laughing too. He had already come to terms with it; it was just initially a bit awkward. Now that they were all laughing, it didn’t feel awkward anymore.
The three of them walked back, discussing this incident. Cheng Yang had learned his lesson due to this woman’s betrayal. He now approached relationships with extreme rationality, which reassured Gu Pan and the others—he would never be fooled by a woman again.
When they reached their floor, they each went to their homes to eat. They still had to go out in the afternoon to scavenge for supplies. After all, there were still many unexplored places around the university. When the weather warmed up, many foods would mold and spoil, which would be a pity.
Today, they headed towards the peripheries, trying to explore less populous areas, even if it was rudimentary. This usually netted them more than other places.
However, today’s haul wasn’t significant; they just brought back what they found, along with a lot of combustible material for burning.
While returning, they heard in the stairwell that an elderly person on the eighth floor had passed away, not particularly old but had been staving off hunger by drinking water, pretending to eat in front of the children, actually saving the food for them.
The child only discovered this after the elderly person passed away, finding out in their room, then crying inconsolably.
Gu Pan and the others were somewhat moved. The apocalypse really was a mirror reflecting people’s hearts. Some blood relatives would kill each other over a small amount of food, yet some would rather sacrifice themselves to let the younger ones live.
In the following week, Gu Pan and their team lived relatively peacefully. By this time, their team’s combat power had grown significantly.
Now, finding supplies was getting increasingly difficult. Fortunately, they had stored enough previously, so there wasn’t much to worry about. Of course, whenever there was time, everyone still went out. Regardless of what they found, it was always useful.
