“Wow!!” Their family hadn’t had chicken since the Chinese New Year. After all, farmers raise chickens for laying eggs, and even if there are roosters, they have to be raised until the New Year. Therefore, unless there was an accident, it was basically impossible to have chicken on a normal day.
During the Chinese New Year last year, Han Qingsong received many rewards and the family ate them well. Although there were also some rewards this year, they mostly consisted of flour, grain, oil and pork. Chicken was never on the list of benefits that their father brought back, so this was a first.
“Father, where did the chicken come from?” Sanwang rushed over first and diligently took the chicken that had its legs tied up.
Han Qingsong didn’t give the chicken to him because he thought that it was dirty. Instead, he temporarily put it back in the chicken coop and waited for Lin Lan to tell him when she wanted him to kill and skin the chicken. He simply said, “They thinned out the flock, so I was given one,” With that, he left to wash his hands.
Lin Lan immediately translated what he meant to the children. In fact, the control was
strict. Two people would have one chicken. Even in a collective chicken farm, there should not be a lot more than that ratio, so any excess chickens would be eliminated.
Although the children didn’t understand, everyone seemed to uphold this rule, so they weren’t too curious about it either.
By then, Sanwang had already held Xiaobai in his arms, stroking the little puppy up and down.
Lin Lan led the children to prepare the meal.
There were many kinds of vegetables in the
garden in midsummer, so their meals could be varied. Lin Lan was happy to cook them and made a full table of dishes every night. She didn’t cook them like how everyone else did— as in, tossing all sorts of vegetables into a pot and hoping for the best. As a result, no one would be able to properly taste the distinct flavour of the varying vegetables and instead, everything would feel the same.
After stir-frying the green beans, she sautéd the peppercorns and green onions in a bit of oil. Those were then stir-fried until soft before she added some hot water and simmered until it became fragrant. Of course, their favourite cold dishes during the summer couldn’t be missed. Recipes included cool tomatoes, garlic cucumbers, garlic eggplants and egg drop soup, which was enough for the whole family to savour deliciously. 𝘯𝑜𝘷𝘱𝘶𝑏.𝘤𝘰𝑚
Sanwang did not forget to hold the puppy while eating. In fact, he even wanted to feed it some egg drop soup.
Lin Lan stopped him, “Let him have milk for a couple of days first. Eating anything else this early on can cause it to have diarrhea,” To be fair, native dogs weren’t that frail, but it was still dangerous to feed it anything when it was still in its nursing stage.
Sanwang was obedient as he quickly put Xiaobai back to nurse.
After dinner, Sanwang beckoned for his siblings to go cicada hunting with him, but Dawang refused to go.
Sanwang, “Eldest Brother, it just rained, so there are going to be a lot of cicadas and larvaes. Why don’t you want to come with us?”
Dawang, “I’m going to be reading.”
Lin Lan and the children, what? Reading? Haha, the sun is going to rise at night!
Seeing their surprised expressions, Dawang’s face darkened a bit. He walked into the room expressionlessly before he lit a lamp and sat at the table to read very seriously.
