Chapter 235: Missing the great virtue in Chapter 225
Elder Shen also drove away the onlookers and followed Shen Yunfang inside to ask about the events of the previous night.
Shen Yunfang, of course, chose to tell the more palatable side of the story and didn’t dare reveal that she had been locked in the dark room.
After listening, Elder Shen nodded repeatedly and said, "It’s good that you are fine, fine. When you have time, call Hongjun and tell him to properly thank his comrade-in-arms. I was looking for Hongjun, but he wasn’t there, and it was his comrade who helped."
"Alright, I understand." Shen Yunfang had only seen Xing Zhonghua come to her rescue, she hadn’t known that Li Hongjun’s comrade had also helped. This was something she needed to inquire about more closely.
"Nothing else, just make sure to pay close attention to your safety at home. If something happens, don’t try to be a hero. Remember, to suffer is to be blessed. Who knows if you’ve offended someone and they are scheming against you behind your back," Elder Shen couldn’t help but lecture a few more sentences.
Shen Yunfang nodded in agreement, "Elder, I understand."
However, she felt she just stayed at home and had little contact with outsiders. Where could she have possibly offended anyone? If there was someone she had offended, it would be only one person, Shen Fuzhen, but this was something she couldn’t discuss with Elder Shen.
"Alright then, it’s good that you’re okay. You’ve had a rough night. Don’t worry about anything now and rest up. I’ll be leaving." Seeing that Yunfang appeared to be in low spirits, likely from fatigue, Elder Shen surmised that nobody could remain unaffected after being captured, let alone eat and sleep well. So after sitting for a while, he got up and left, telling Yunfang to lock the door and rest up properly, especially since she was pregnant and had been through such a scare – she needed time to recover.
After seeing Elder Shen off, Brother Dashuan’s wife came knocking at the door.
Brother Dashuan’s wife didn’t say much, just placed the food on the table, urged Yunfang to eat well, and get some sleep after, insisting that any matters could wait until she was rested.
After sending Brother Dashuan’s wife off, Shen Yunfang quickly ate her meal. Then, she slipped out the back door and hurried towards the mountains. She was still uneasy about the chickens and pigs on the mountain and knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep without checking on them.
The situation on the mountain was as she had expected, with the wretched cries of the pigs audible from afar. Upon arriving, Taxue immediately ran over to her, circling around her excitedly. Patting it on the head to calm it down, she first fed the pigs, then the sheep, and finally went to check on the chickens.
The chickens in the pen weren’t too energetic but were still better off than yesterday. After feeding them and collecting the eggs, Yunfang did a round around the pen and noticed nothing amiss. No chickens had died, nor were there any traces of weasels. She wasn’t sure if Taxue had scared the weasel away or if its presence yesterday evening was just a fluke. In any case, her chickens were fine last night.
Shen Yunfang rewarded Taxue with a small basin of bones from her space, and the dog’s tail wagged in circles with joy.
Having fed all the livestock on the mountain and leaving instructions for Taxue, she quickly descended the mountain. This time, she lay down on the kang bed at home and could finally sleep peacefully.
She slept until it was dark, awakened by the sound of knocking.
Shen Yunfang sat up, patted her cheeks to freshen up, and then went to open the door.
"Oh, still groggy? Had we known, we would’ve come tomorrow morning instead." The visitors were Brother Dashuan and his wife.
"I’m almost awake. I slept so much I’m hungry. Come in quickly. Have you eaten? If not, let’s eat together," Shen Yunfang ushered the couple inside.
"At this hour, we’ve long since finished eating. Just look after yourself," said Brother Dashuan’s wife. "Hey, you really shouldn’t be moving around. Go lie down inside, and just tell me what you want. I’ll cook it for you." She couldn’t bear to watch a pregnant woman bustling around in front of her.
"Don’t fancy much, just some millet porridge with salted duck eggs," Shen Yunfang wasn’t shy at all, her mouth already watering at the thought of the food.
That was easy to prepare, even Dashuan could manage it. "I’ll have a chat with Yunfang inside, and you go make some millet porridge for her," Dashuan’s wife directed her husband.
"Sure, sure. You all go in, and I’ll cook," said Dashuan in his good-natured way.
Shen Yunfang chuckled and pulled Dashuan’s wife inside, "You’re really taking advantage, aren’t you? My Brother Dashuan is turning into a jack-of-all-trades thanks to you." Indeed, he was skilled enough for both the parlor and the kitchen.
"Oh, cut it out. He wouldn’t lift a finger like that at home," Dashuan’s wife rolled her eyes but couldn’t help laughing.
At her own home, with the mother-in-law around, no matter how nice the mother-in-law, she wouldn’t stand to see her daughter-in-law ordering her son around. So at home, Dashuan’s wife served others, and it was only when she was at Yunfang’s place that someone took care of her.
"Come on, tell sister-in-law what really happened," Dashuan’s wife began inquiring as soon as she sat on the kang.
"I’m not exactly sure what happened myself, but from what I overheard from those people, it seems someone wrote a complaint letter against me, not just one but at least three, mainly accusing me of keeping so many chickens and stealing the collective’s food to feed them."
"Who would do such a thing, lacking so much virtue? These are baseless accusations. Who saw you stealing food? Such falsehoods, and they aren’t even afraid of their mouths rotting," Dashuan’s wife was furiously indignant upon hearing this.
If we’re talking about raising chickens, Yunfang’s household had the most, followed by hers. She also had over fifty chickens this year. Now she was somewhat afraid, grateful that she hadn’t shown off about raising chickens to others, or she might have ended up like Yunfang, targeted by others.
"Sister-in-law, don’t be angry. There are always those who can’t bear to see others do well. As for us, it’s useless to get upset. This was a lesson for me. I thought I could just keep to myself, not bother others, and it would be okay. I forgot to consider the wickedness of people’s hearts. From now on, I really do need to keep my door shut and live my life," Shen Yunfang said helplessly.
"Let’s not talk about that. I heard from my Dashuan that Captain Xing was a big help this time. Now that you’re alright, you should think about how to express your gratitude," Dashuan’s wife reminded her.
Captain Xing seemed very capable, even able to handle matters with the Revolutionary Committee. For them, the common folk who toiled with faces to the earth and backs to the sky, the chance to meet such officials was once in a lifetime. Yunfang was lucky to know him and needed to maintain that relationship well.
"Indeed, I’ve been thinking about it. I’ll go see Sister Jiang and Captain Xing tomorrow."
