Chapter 385: Chapter 375 Bai Nao了
Qiu Shuping had just run into the room when she heard the doctor mention amputation, something she had never heard of before, so she only asked out of ignorance and curiosity.
"Ma’am, amputation means that when a leg doesn’t heal properly, in order to prevent the disease from spreading further up, we have to saw the leg off, otherwise..."
The doctor was just explaining to Qiu Shuping what amputation meant, but before he could finish, she pounced on him with a howl.
"Howl! If you dare to saw off my old man’s leg, I will fight you with my life."
"Ma’am, ma’am, it’s not like that, listen to me," the doctor stammered, still quite young and not very experienced in handling such fierce women at the clinic. He could only try his best to stretch out his arms and block Qiu Shuping from getting too close, so her hands couldn’t reach his face.
But he underestimated the fierce nature of rural women. "I might not reach your face, but I’ll scratch wherever I can."
It was August, and the weather was still very hot. The young doctor was wearing a short-sleeved shirt, so in the blink of an eye, his arms were all scratched up, with Qiu Shuping having inflicted several bloody scratches on him.
"Mom, what are you doing, let go!" Li Hongjun stepped forward, grabbed Qiu Shuping’s arm, and dragged her aside, successfully rescuing the young doctor.
Waving his scratched arms about, the young doctor looked at the marks on them and felt like crying without tears. What had he said? He hadn’t said anything wrong. He was just earnestly explaining what amputation was. Why had she attacked without a word?
He felt so wronged, his heart ached!!!
"Mom, can you stop causing trouble?" Li Hongjun, seeing his mother ready to charge again, controlled her angrily.
"You good-for-nothing, didn’t you hear this wretched doctor say he was going to saw off your dad’s leg? And you won’t let me scratch him? Oh, my goodness, it’s killing me. Old man, if you lose your leg, how are we going to live? We might as well both drink pesticide and end it clean." As Qiu Shuping spoke, she thought of her husband paralyzed in bed and her having to take care of him, and felt life was hopeless. She began to cry and wail again.
"Shut up, I’m not dead yet, what are you mourning for!" Old Li glared his eyes but because he was sitting down and shorter than everyone, his presence was diminished quite a bit.
"Ma’am, you got it wrong; I was just explaining what amputation is. I never said we had to amputate the old gentleman’s leg." He was aggrieved; those scratches he received were for nothing.
"Exactly, you old woman, why can’t you listen properly before raising a fuss? Look at what you’ve done, scratching the young doctor’s arms until they bleed, you really are..." Old Li’s last words trailed off in resignation.
His own leg had just been diagnosed by the doctor as festering, needing treatment, and could possibly result in an amputation if not handled well. He vividly remembered the doctor’s frightening words.
He had intended to ask the young doctor to treat him carefully, but before he could ask, his wife had made a scene and possibly created a grudge with the doctor. If the doctor was upset and made a careless mistake while treating his injury, his leg could be ruined.
"It’s nothing, just a minor injury, it’ll heal with some anti-inflammatory treatment. It’s also my fault for not explaining clearly, causing the misunderstanding," said the young doctor, who was quite good-natured and felt it was better to send these people away quickly so he could have some peace.
At that moment, Qiu Shuping also realized that she might have misunderstood. She stopped crying, but she couldn’t quite bring herself to apologize to the young doctor. Hearing the young doctor take the blame himself, she took the opportunity to say, "Exactly, if you had explained clearly, would I have scratched you?"
Li Hongjun pressed his lips together, not wanting to hear his mother being unreasonable (he usually detested those who play the victim without any real ability, never expecting his own mother to be such a person), and solemnly apologized to the young doctor before asking him to examine Old Li’s injured leg.
The main concern was to see if they could treat his leg here; if not, he’d have to take Dad to the city hospital.
The young doctor didn’t say anything, just took out his tools and began treating the old Mr. Li’s wound.
The bandage was unwrapped again, and when they got to the last part that was stuck, the doctor used scissors to trim off the excess gauze. He then got a new gauze, soaked it in disinfectant, and placed it on the scab to moisten it. Once the scab became soft, the gauze sticking to it could be removed. This way it wouldn’t be too painful for the patient.
"Hey, do you even know what you’re doing?" Qiu Shuping got anxious when she saw his slow and methodical approach.
"Auntie, don’t worry. If I just pull it off, it will be very painful for the old man because the gauze is stuck to the flesh. This way, once the scab is soft, the gauze can be removed easily," the doctor explained.
"How long is that gonna take? Isn’t there a quicker way?" Qiu Shuping asked.
She had run after this father and son, and she hadn’t even had dinner yet.
"There is another way, as long as the old man can bear it. I can cut off the scab and the gauze together," the doctor said reluctantly, not actually recommending this method.
Qiu Shuping imagined that scenario, shuddered, and didn’t urge him on any further.
Hongjun felt that his father’s wound had already become infected. Even after removing the bandage, they would still need to reopen the wound that had started to heal to squeeze out the pus and disinfect inside properly. It was going to hurt either way, so there was really no need for all this dawdling in the first place.
"Doctor, seeing as how swollen my father’s wound is, I think it might be infected. Can you handle it here?"
"I can, but the facility here isn’t fully equipped and we’re short on alcohol. After cleaning out the pus, at best I can apply some purple potion. I’d still recommend going to the city hospital for a proper treatment, for your peace of mind," the young doctor said, fully aware of his own capabilities and the limited supplies in the health clinic.
"What? Go to the hospital? No, we’re not going," Qiu Shuping immediately dismissed the idea without even thinking about it.
"Hehe, it’s fine if you don’t want to go. I can treat it here too, but since our supplies are limited, I can’t guarantee the disinfection will be as thorough. You should come back in a few days to change the dressing and let me check if there’s any further infection. If there is, you’ll have to go to the hospital," the doctor said with a chuckle.
"No need, Doctor. Please help us bandage the wound, we’ll go straight to the hospital," Hongjun made the decision.
His dad’s leg was already inflamed, and a poor treatment here might lead to recurring issues. Since the young doctor mentioned the clinic’s limited supplies, there was no point in letting his dad suffer twice.
"No, we can’t go," Qiu Shuping, seeing that Hongjun was serious about going to the hospital, hurriedly intervened.
"Why not?" Hongjun was perplexed.
"Yeah, why not?" Old Mr. Li didn’t understand why his wife was against going either.
