Chapter 395: Chapter 385 is really enough

In the afternoon, the couple took some stuff and went to the hospital, just in time to see the doctor explaining Jiajia’s current medical condition to Li Xianglian.

Li Xianglian looked completely helpless, as she couldn’t understand, and she was afraid that misunderstanding might delay her child’s treatment. Seeing Li Hongjun and his wife arrive, she excitedly pulled them over, "Doctor, could you please repeat what you just told me to my brother and sister-in-law? They’re educated and will understand. I just can’t grasp it."

The doctor was still very patient and explained Jiajia’s condition to Li Hongjun and his wife once more.

"...When she was brought in yesterday, her temperature was 39.9°C, her nutrition was poor, she was in a coma, her pupils were constricted, her tongue had... White blood cells were 10,250, not differentiated, spinal fluid cells were 42, polymorphonuclear cells were 45, lymphocytes... Annao Pills six tablets, three tablets of another medication induced decoction, taken every three hours, the medication included two money of rhino horn, six money of Rehmannia Root, three money of Angelica root..."

The doctor was very clear in his instructions and went over Jiajia’s condition upon admission and the current situation, as well as the current treatment methods.

Shen Yunfang and Li Hongjun weren’t medically trained, so they only half-understood what was being said. They couldn’t comprehend the specifics of the medications mentioned later, but they understood the earlier part, which meant that since the child had been admitted yesterday, the hospital had made a diagnosis and had initially observed some positive effects over the day.

That was good, that was good. As long as there was improvement, there was hope for the child.

Shen Yunfang explained the situation to Li Xianglian, who then understood and couldn’t stop thanking the doctor profusely.

After sending off the doctor, Li Hongjun handed the things he was carrying to Li Xianglian.

"This is what Yunfang bought for you. You’re taking care of Jiajia here, and if you ever miss a meal or get hungry, just have a snack. Don’t hesitate to eat; your health is more important than anything else."

Li Xianglian looked at the bag full of canned food and biscuits, hesitant to take it, "There’s no need, no need. I have meals every day here, why should I eat these nice things? Take them back, let the children eat them."

"They have plenty, these are for you and Jiajia. Let’s not argue about this, other people are watching." Shen Yunfang took the items and stuffed them into the bedside cabinet next to Jiajia’s bed, then added, "These things can’t be kept for too long. Don’t save them only to have them go moldy and end up throwing them away. That would be such a waste. And I bought you a set of clothes, you can change into it. If anything doesn’t fit, just tell me, and I’ll buy you another."

Seeing her sister-in-law busying about with such care, Li Xianglian’s tears involuntarily streamed down. Her second brother had indeed married a wonderful woman.

Shen Yunfang, who hadn’t heard any sound, turned around and saw that Li Xianglian was crying, so she quickly stood up and went over. "Big sister, please don’t cry anymore, others are watching. Besides, the doctor just said Jiajia is improving, we should be smiling instead."

"Yes, yes, of course, we should be smiling." Li Xianglian, noticing that the relatives of the patient in the neighboring bed were looking over, wiped her face sheepishly in a bit of embarrassment.

"Big sister, you stay here with Jiajia for now; Hongjun and I need to step out for a bit."

"Sure, go ahead, there’s nothing to worry about here, no need to bother yourselves." Li Xianglian appreciated that her younger brother and his wife could come and see them, she was already very grateful.

Without saying anything else, Shen Yunfang pulled Li Hongjun out of the ward. Li Hongjun didn’t know what his wife was up to, but he went along with her plans.

Shen Yunfang pulled him aside and looked around before saying, "We forgot something when we were shopping just now. Why didn’t we buy something for Jiajia’s attending doctor?"

Li Hongjun frowned, why buy him gifts?

"You’re just too stubborn," Shen Yunfang firmly believed in the rule that a favor received obliges one to return it. "If we give the doctor something, he might take extra care of Jiajia’s illness because of those gifts."

"What kind of thinking is that? It’s the doctor’s duty to treat and save people, even if we don’t give him anything, he must treat Jiajia properly," Li Hongjun’s eyes widened in disapproval.

Shen Yunfang frowned, it’s not good for someone to have such rigid principles. Maybe she was wrong to discuss gift-giving with a soldier of the people; to expect a good outcome was just wishful thinking. She had to change her approach.

"Just think about it, the doctor looks after Jiajia day and night without rest. Is it not hard work?" Since yesterday, when the doctor took over Jiajia’s case, he had stayed continuously beside her, for her condition was not very stable. He didn’t even go home last night, stayed over in the doctor’s lounge, and visited the ward several times to check on Jiajia. Shen Yunfang doubted she would ever see a doctor so dedicated again; thus, she deeply respected him. By giving the doctor gifts, she wanted to ensure he continued to give his utmost in treating Jiajia, and it was also a way to show respect for his selfless dedication.

Li Hongjun fell silent, indeed it was hard work.

"See, if someone else helps our child, we as parents should express our thanks. Now that the doctor is so dedicated, what’s wrong with us giving a little something to show gratitude and respect?" Shen Yunfang continued her persuasion.

Li Hongjun had nothing to say.

"Alright, I can’t count on you for this. I’ll handle it," Shen Yunfang said. She looked around, pulled Li Hongjun over to shield her, and took out the two cans she had bought for the kids from her space, placing them in an opaque bag. After thinking for a bit, she also added some biscuits and cakes.

"What are you doing? Those are for Pangpang and Manman," Li Hongjun always kept an eye on their surroundings and noticed his wife taking out the treats he had bought for their children, apparently to give to the doctor. He immediately objected. Those were for his kids.

"Shh, keep your voice down, afraid someone might not hear you, right?" Shen Yunfang, irritated, thumped Li Hongjun on the back. He could be so immature sometimes.

"Those are for our kids," Li Hongjun insisted, though his voice was indeed lower. 𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑝𝘶𝘣.𝑐𝘰𝘮

"I know, I know, it’s just I don’t have any stock right now. When I go home later, I’ll make it up to the kids, alright?" If her space had those items, would she need to go to such lengths? This also reminded her that she should keep some canned foods, biscuits, milk candies, and spirits in her space to use as gifts when needed, so as not to be caught unprepared.

"It’s not the same, those were specifically for my son and daughter," Li Hongjun frowned. His thoughts behind those gifts were unique; how could hers be the same if bought later?

"Enough already, it’s just a few cans. I’ll tell your daughter and son that you bought them, okay? I certainly won’t take credit for it. Go ahead and check on your sister. I’ll come back later and we’ll head to the train station," Shen Yunfang finished instructing, no longer paying attention to his complaints, and headed straight to the doctor’s office.

The doctor’s office wasn’t private; it was shared among several doctors. Shen Yunfang lingered at the door for a long time, unable to find the right moment to give the gifts to Jiajia’s attending physician.

Finally, having no other choice, she knocked on the door and called the doctor to the hallway, then handed over the gifts in a bit of a rush.

Back in the ward, Shen Yunfang wiped the sweat from her forehead. It was exhausting; why was nothing ever easy?
