Chapter 621: Chapter 611 Under Investigation (Part 1)
That afternoon, when Li Hongjun went to work, he took Pangpang straight to school. The couple had discussed it and decided to pick up their child from school for a week to let him get familiar with the surrounding environment before letting him go to and from school on his own.
Actually, the elementary school was right next to the military residential compound, and safety could be ensured, so there was no need for parents to pick up and drop off their children.
Shen Yunfang rubbed the soft quilt, sighing with relief. While everyone else was at work, it felt so good to be the only one indulging in sleep, even though she was already awake, she still didn’t feel like getting out of bed yet.
As she was lazily rubbing around in bed, finding excuses not to get up, knock, knock, knock, someone started knocking on the door.
Shen Yunfang lifted her head slightly from the bed and glanced toward the living room, but within two seconds her little head dropped back down again. She hummed in her heart, not wanting to get up or answer the door. What to do?
Knock, knock, knock...
Shen Yunfang struggled in bed for several minutes before she finally managed to crawl out of it.
"Hold on a moment," she called out to the person outside, not caring whether they heard her or not, before starting to change her clothes.
She had changed into a cotton nightgown she had made herself for her nap, which was definitely not suitable for going out and meeting people.
Luckily, it seemed like the person outside had heard her because they stopped knocking.
After changing her clothes, Shen Yunfang quickly tidied up the messy bed, then checked her appearance in the mirror at the vanity to make sure there was nothing improper before going to open the door.
"Hello, who are you looking for?"
Upon opening the door, Shen Yunfang was slightly startled because there were two military personnel standing there, and they weren’t just ordinary soldiers; they both had stars on their shoulders.
"Hello, may I ask if you are Colonel Li Hongjun’s wife?" a man with a slightly dark complexion asked seriously.
"Yes," Shen Yunfang responded, involuntarily becoming serious herself. "Are you looking for me? What’s the matter?"
"The thing is, the Logistics Support Department has received a complaint against Colonel Li Hongjun, and we would like to ask for your assistance in the investigation." It was not a question, but a notification.
Shen Yunfang was shocked to hear this. She hadn’t expected her husband, Li Hongjun, to be reported on. Had he offended someone, or gotten in someone’s way? What was the complaint about? Why did they need her assistance with the investigation? What did they hope to gain from her? In that instant, countless thoughts flashed through her mind, but as a seasoned military spouse, not from a rural background, she managed not to show any sign of panic on her face; instead, she frowned.
"Could you possibly have made a mistake? My husband, Li Hongjun, has only been in this military region for a few months. Someone has reported him already? Can I ask what this is about?"
The two men at the door were closely observing her expressions while they spoke, hoping to glean something from her momentary reactions.
"Sorry, we have our discipline. Until the matter is cleared up, we can’t disclose these things. Comrade Shen, the leaders are waiting, can we hurry up a bit?" The dark-skinned military man was clearly growing impatient with Shen Yunfang’s probing, his tone getting colder.
Shen Yunfang glanced at him sidelong, finding him inexplicably irritating. Suddenly someone comes to take her in for questioning, and her worried first reaction is to ask what’s wrong, which is a completely normal human response. If she just followed these men without saying anything, that would be the real insanity.
However, even through these few sentences, she figured out what type of person this military man was.
"Fine, please wait for me a moment," Shen Yunfang said, then went back inside without regarding the expressions of the two men at the door. She checked the kitchen’s gas and the water and electricity to make sure everything was in order. After ensuring her clothes were appropriate, she walked straight to the door, changed her shoes in front of the two soldiers, took her keys from the hook by the door, locked it, and stepped out.
"Alright, let’s go," Shen Yunfang stood firm, looking at the two "leaders" in front of her.
The two exchanged a glance, said nothing, turned around, and went downstairs, "escorting" Shen Yunfang to the Logistics Department.
Shen Yunfang was taken to a room on the second floor of the military district office building. The furnishings inside... how should I put it, they resembled those interrogation rooms she saw on TV. The differences might be that there was no railing separating her from the leaders, and the chair she sat on was normal, not the kind with locks.
After Shen Yunfang settled down, she subtly sized up the people across from her, four in total, with two actually sporting two bars and four stars. She didn’t understand much about military ranks, but her own Li Hongjun had two bars and three stars on his shoulders; these were one star more, so they must be at least the rank of a deputy division-level leader, right?
"Hello, you are Li Hongjun’s spouse, Shen Yunfang, correct?" the military officer in the center began to question her.
"Yes," Shen Yunfang saw the leader’s attitude as one ready for a tea chat, and although the environment indeed wasn’t much, she responded with the same demeanor.
"I’ve heard that you just graduated from college and gave up a great opportunity to stay and work in the Capital, choosing instead to follow Li Hongjun to Z Province to teach. Comrade Shen, such a military spouse is truly worthy of our admiration," the leader in the middle said warmly.
Was this an opening smokescreen?
"You flatter me, Leader. Working anywhere is contributing to the country, and being able to take care of the family at the same time makes me happy." Anyone can say nice things, right?
"Hehe, Xiaoshen has high ideological awareness, truly befitting a university graduate," the leader complimented with a smiling gaze, "However, the reason we sought you out this year is that the organization wants to understand some matters from you."
The main act was starting, and Shen Yunfang sat up straight, seriously saying, "Leader, please tell me." 𝒏𝒐𝙫𝙥𝙪𝙗.𝒄𝙤𝙢
"Hehe, don’t be nervous, we’re just chatting casually. I’ve heard that you moved here after the New Year and it hasn’t even been two months, right?"
"Yes, I moved here on the sixteenth of the first lunar month, so it’s just over a month." This was common knowledge, and Shen Yunfang also faintly understood where the problem with this incident lay.
"I also heard that within a month of moving here, you’ve been quite busy," the leader remarked, casting a sharp glance her way.
Shen Yunfang frowned, perplexed, and asked, "Leader, I don’t quite understand what you’re saying. Can you clearly tell me what I’ve been busy with?" She looked at the several leaders across from her with sincere, eager eyes, hoping for an answer.
Ahem, another one with two bars and four stars coughed a few times.
The two with three stars subtly glanced at the two middle leaders and then assumed serious postures, sitting up straight and looking sternly at Shen Yunfang.
"Hehe, let me explain. I’ve heard that soon after you moved here, you purchased two large appliances, a refrigerator and a washing machine. I also heard your house already had a color television, correct?" The leader in the center, catching the hint from his partner, got to the point without beating around the bush.
"Yes," Shen Yunfang nodded.
"And not half a month later, your family brought back a truckload of new furniture, is that true?"
"That’s right, my family just moved here, we didn’t have anything in the house. What’s the issue with me buying some basic household necessities?"
The corners of the mouths of the leaders across twitched in unison, your standards for basic household necessities seem quite high.
