The next day, Shen Yunfang took Sun Dawei to the farm, showing him the wasteland that needed to be reclaimed. Without anyone else around, of course, she couldn’t let him start reclaiming the land right away. What he needed to do for now was to build as many grass sheds as possible to prepare for those who would come later.

After the initial shock, Sun Dawei quickly got into the swing of things. He borrowed some wood from Zhang Bin’s construction team and set up a simple framework, then started swinging his scythe to cut grass.

There was nothing in the wasteland, just an abundance of wild grass.

Seeing that Sun Dawei had started working in earnest, Shen Yunfang hastily advised him to take it easy and take his time, as there was no rush.

Without even lifting his head, Sun Dawei’s scythe whirled furiously through the air.

"You keep on working here, and I’ll go back to cook. Watch the time around noon, and when it’s time, head home to eat," Shen Yunfang said. In preparation for such times, she had bought two bicycles at the department store for the workers to use as transportation.

The place was rather remote; although there was a fairly wide road, there were no buses coming this way. If one were to walk back, it would take up the entire day, leaving no time for work, only for being on the road.

Sun Dawei was aware of the distance, as he and his sister-in-law had ridden their bicycles for twenty minutes to get here that morning. "Sister-in-law, I won’t go back at noon. It’s troublesome to go back and forth. I’ll just get by on something here." In just a short while, his forehead was already covered with a layer of sweat.

It was only then that Shen Yunfang realized why he had taken two extra buns with him when he left the house – they were his lunch.

"That won’t do, how can you, a grown man, get by just on two buns after working all morning? Look, you can’t just work yourself to death; that’s bad for your health. Besides, with so much work, even if you don’t eat or drink, you can’t finish everything in one day, so you don’t need to skimp on your lunch break," she said, playing the role of a boss who had to follow her employees around to urge them not to overwork themselves.

Sun Dawei didn’t look up or say anything, just kept on cutting grass.

Well, there was no point in talking anymore; this was a stubborn one, just like her brother-in-law, Li Hongjun.

"Fine, do as you please, I won’t bother you anymore." Seeing the situation, Shen Yunfang decided not to persuade him any further.

"Mmm, you don’t need to worry about me, sister-in-law. I reckon I can set up two grass sheds today; I can stay here tonight," Sun Dawei planned to stay on the site from that day forward.

Shen Yunfang had no choice but to accept such dedication, "Ha ha, you decide for yourself then. I’m going back first, and don’t forget to come back for lunch." She reminded him once more and then turned to check on Zhang Bin’s site.

Although she had contracted out the entire family building to Zhang Bin, she, as the boss, still needed to come over from time to time to supervise the work.

Zhang Bin wasn’t on the construction site; he had gone to negotiate for materials, but he had a deputy on-site keeping an eye on the workers. Shen Yunfang went to check on their progress and was satisfied with what she saw. In less than five days, they had already dug up a small part of the foundation. Although Shen Yunfang was building a dormitory building, it was far from small in size. The second floor alone was planned for ten two-bedroom suites, preparing for future workers with families. With that in mind, there was no way the building could be considered small.

After the inspection, Shen Yunfang rode her bicycle leisurely back home.

Li Hongjun had said that some comrades-in-arms might report back in the coming days, so she should stay at home if possible.

After getting home, whenever she was free, Yunfang would head to the kitchen to start preparing a meal. She guessed that Sun Dawei wouldn’t be able to make it back for lunch, so she decided to make it earlier and deliver it to him. They were working so hard for her family; as the boss, she felt she needed to show her appreciation.

Indeed, by the time she finished cooking lunch, Hongjun had already come back to eat, but Sun Dawei still had not appeared.

"Sun Dawei is really overdoing it. I told him to come back for lunch, but he insisted that two buns would suffice, saying that’s all he needed. How is that okay?" Yunfang nagged to Hongjun about this.

"Just pack the meal, and I’ll cycle it over to him later," Hongjun said without further comment, quickly starting his meal.

"No way, you only get so little rest at noon, and if you go there, you’ll have no time to rest at all. Don’t worry about it, I’ll deliver it in a bit." Although Yunfang’s complaint was directed at Hongjun, it was more out of affection – who wouldn’t be pleased to have such a good worker? But when she heard Hongjun offer to deliver the meal, she quickly changed her tune; she had to take extra care of her own man.

Hongjun looked outside; the weather in May was no longer cool, especially the midday sun, which was particularly fierce. He didn’t argue with his wife. After eating quickly, he grabbed the packed lunchbox that his wife had prepared and headed out. "You rest after you finish eating. I’ll be back soon."

"Hey, hey, come back here..." Yunfang couldn’t stop him and muttered to herself in annoyance as she watched the door close behind him, "Really, he’s in such a hurry, you’d think there were dogs chasing him."

By dinner time, Sun Dawei still hadn’t shown up at home. "Didn’t you tell Dawei at noon? He’s not coming to eat dinner either?"

"I told him, he said he’d be back soon. Don’t worry about him, just save some food for him," Hongjun replied as he picked a piece of meat for his daughter, as everyone in the family loved to have meat in their meals.

Just as they were eating, Sun Dawei finally returned.

"You’re finally back. I thought you weren’t going to come back for dinner. I was just telling your brother Li that if you didn’t come back, we’d both bring you a meal," Yunfang said as she quickly asked the kids to get him a stool and went to fill a bowl with rice for him.

"Hehe, no need, I came back as soon as I finished working," Sun Dawei said, his face tanned and smiling.

"Alright, you must be hungry, hurry up and eat. Later, I’ll get you some things together and you can go down to the public bath to clean up properly after a long day’s work," Yunfang said handing him the bowl and showing her concern.

The young man didn’t say anything and started wolfing down his meal.

Pangpang and Manman watched the uncle eat at such a speed that they became anxious, worried that if they ate too slowly, the uncle would take all the meat that their mother had cooked.

Seeing her two unimpressive kids, Yunfang shook her head helplessly. To save face, she went to the kitchen and scooped all the remaining food from the pot onto a plate, settling down the two kids.

After dinner, Sun Dawei took the bath items his sister-in-law had prepared for him and went to take a bath. Then, carrying his luggage, he said he would stay overnight at the newly built straw hut.

Yunfang, of course, wasn’t able to stop him and just watched as Hongjun rode off with him on their bicycles. Thankfully, Hongjun still knew to come home; it was already dark when he came back home alone on his bicycle.
