Chapter 666: Chapter 656 Got a Car
Just as they were about to knock off work at midday, several Dongfeng trucks approached from the distance.
"Sister-in-law, Weizhong and the others are back." Zhang Chunwang saw the trucks coming while he was in the field and took off running toward the dormitory building.
"Really, they’ve arrived? Come on, let’s go have a look." Shen Yunfang stood up from behind her desk and hurried outside.
By the time they got out, the four Dongfeng trucks had already pulled up on the Drying Yard.
The Drying Yard was now stacked with lots of autumn vegetables, and Zhang Chunwang hurried over to direct a few people so they could park the trucks side by side smoothly.
"Sister-in-law, we’re back." After speaking a few words with Zhang Chunwang, Zhang Weizhong went running towards Shen Yunfang.
"You guys worked hard, nothing happened on the road, right?" Shen Yunfang asked with concern.
"No problems, everything was ready when we arrived. We tested the trucks and felt there were no issues, so we drove them back. Sister-in-law, go have a look, it’s really impressive." Men never dislike cars.
As Zhang Weizhong was speaking, the other three also came over.
"Let’s go, let’s all go take a look at the trucks." Shen Yunfang, leading a few people who had run over at the sound of the trucks, hurried over to check out the vehicles.
This was the first time in her life Shen Yunfang had bought trucks, but she wasn’t an expert on them. She could drive but not repair them, so she only looked at the surface.
"Hmm, not bad." Shen Yunfang walked around the trucks once.
She ordered a total of four trucks— one normal one, and the others had their backs replaced with customized insulated compartments.
Zhang Weizhong and the others followed alongside, introducing the vehicles’ features while Shen Yunfang listened without fully understanding, yet she still nodded from time to time to show her respect.
"Sister-in-law, now that the trucks are here, why don’t we organize the people to load them up and deliver the cabbages? It’s only midday; if things go well, we could make two trips today." After looking at the trucks, Zhang Chunwang saw an opportunity to interject.
Once the cabbages were in hand, Zhang Chunwang felt a heavy burden. These were money and hard work, after all. If they weren’t stored properly and ended up frozen, it would be a disaster. Right now, his one desire was to quickly haul the vegetables away to feel relief once the money was securely in hand.
As the boss, Shen Yunfang was naturally pleased that her employees were always thinking of the farm, and she agreed to his suggestion outright.
"Alright, you take care of it."
"Then I’ll find people right now and start loading up quickly. We’ll try to see if we can get all the cabbages delivered today." Zhang Chunwang spoke and was about to walk toward the greenhouse where the rest of the employees, aside from those looking at the trucks, were busy.
"Hey, wait a minute, it’s almost midday, don’t make everyone work overtime." Shen Yunfang didn’t consider herself a harsh boss.
"No worries, isn’t lunch just a five-minute thing? We’re all grown men here, no one cares about that."
"No, that’s not what I mean. I’m saying it’s the middle of the day, that’s everyone’s time to rest. It’s not too good to assign work during this time." Shen Yunfang saw Zhang Chunwang’s face showing disagreement, oh well, her concern was unwarranted, "Fine, I won’t interfere, you organize as you see fit, but, make sure you tell everyone that working over lunch counts as overtime, and they’ll be paid extra at the end of the month."
Zhang Chunwang didn’t run anymore at this time, but turned around and walked back, kicking Miao Shan who was still moving forward to look at the truck, "Hurry up and inform everyone that we need to load the cabbages onto the truck at noon, and tell them to let go of whatever they’re doing and come over." In the end, he added a sentence, "There’s overtime pay."
"Okay, got it," Miao Shan scurried off. 𝙣𝙤𝙫𝒑𝙪𝒃.𝒄𝒐𝙢
"You should take a break now, you’ve been tired for so many days," Shen Yunfang, seeing Zhang Weizhong and a few others looking exhausted, hurriedly shooed them off to rest, knowing that driving for several consecutive days was not easy.
"We are not tired, we don’t need to rest, we will help with loading the truck later," Zhang Weizhong shook his head to indicate he wasn’t tired, and the other three nodded in agreement.
"If you really don’t feel tired, then keep working, right now we truly are short on hands," Zhang Chunwang, being the manager, of course knew how short-handed the farm was at the moment, wishing he could grow a couple extra arms and legs.
"Sister-in-law, I think it’s about time, I’ll go settle their accounts and then send them back," Zhang Chunwang referred to the army wives who had come to work as temporary labor.
"Okay, but no need for the tractor this time, we have the big truck now, one trip will be enough to send them all back," Shen Yunfang glanced at the group of women peeking over from the other side, guessing they were probably no longer in the mood to work.
The bed of the truck was much larger than that of a tractor; it could accommodate all forty or so people in one go.
Zhang Chunwang nodded, "Then I’ll head over there, and Weizhong, make the trip to send them back, okay?"
"Send them where?" Zhang Weizhong still didn’t know where all these extra women had come from.
Only then did Zhang Chunwang slap his forehead, realizing in all his busyness he had forgotten that Weizhong had been out for several days and didn’t know what was happening at home.
"Never mind, I don’t need you this time, I’ll find someone else, go ahead and help with loading the truck," Zhang Chunwang said and then ran off, vanishing from sight.
Over in the field, the army wives watched the old trucks driving in and began chattering amongst themselves. They all speculated whether these trucks belonged to Shen Yunfang.
Some said they must be, otherwise why would they be parked over here? Then they remarked on how wealthy Shen Yunfang must be, leasing so much land, building a house, and now having so many trucks—it seemed she was even richer than the old landlords.
Others felt the trucks couldn’t possibly belong to Shen Yunfang, inwardly looking down on her. They had all come from the same rural background, so why should she be the one with all the money while they remained poor?
However, they were all working separately, exchanging a word or two with only the person next to them, so most of their thoughts remained unspoken.
When Zhang Chunwang came over, someone boldly asked, "Hey Xiao Zhang, why are those trucks heading over here? They wouldn’t happen to be Shen Yunfang’s, would they?"
"You guessed right. All those trucks belong to our boss, just picked up and brought home, and you are all in luck today because this afternoon you will be sent home in these new trucks. That’s it for this morning, it’s almost eleven, everyone stop what you’re doing and gather at the Drying Yard, we’ll distribute the wages and then you can go home," Zhang Chunwang asked someone for a notebook and led the group back.
"Oh my, Sister Gan, did you hear that? Those trucks really do belong to Shen Yunfang," Zhou Hua exclaimed to Gan Xiuying.
Gan Xiuying, noticing that little Zhang was looking back at them, said impatiently to Zhou Hua, "Why are you shouting? They are not yours."
"No, Sister Gan, don’t you find it strange? How could Shen Yunfang have so much money? I heard that just leasing this piece of land cost a huge amount, not to mention those trucks over there. Oh my, it’s not that she’s done something illegal, is it?" Zhou Hua, green with envy, couldn’t understand why Shen Yunfang got to be a boss who didn’t have to work and just made money sitting in the office, while she had to squat in the field for a whole morning for a pittance—it made it feel like the good old days when landlords were overthrown.
