Old Li had been waiting in his room for a long time but hadn’t heard any movement from the other room, feeling restless and thinking about going out to call out a few times.
As soon as he opened the door, he saw his second son walking out from that room looking sleepy.
Li Hongjun also saw Old Li, and after lightly closing the door, he greeted his father.
"Dad, why are you up so early, you went to bed late last night, why didn’t you sleep in a bit longer?"
"What time is it now? Usually, at this time, I would have finished eating and already taken a stroll around the fields," Old Li said with a tone of dissatisfaction.
Of course, when he mentioned taking a stroll around the fields, he was referring to the summer; in this deep winter, the fields were covered in snow, and even if one went there, there was no need to stroll around.
Li Hongjun didn’t talk back, he hadn’t been living back at home for many days, and there was no need to argue with the old man over such trivial matters. If he said it was early, then it was early.
Li Hongjun said nothing more and went straight to the stove, squatting down to gather the firewood and prepare to light the fire.
Old Li didn’t go back to his room; he watched his son fiddling around and his daughter-in-law had yet to come out. "What are you doing there, why hasn’t your wife come out to cook?"
"Yunfang was busy all day yesterday and went to bed late, so I didn’t have her get up. I’ll make breakfast," Li Hongjun replied without turning his head, as he looked for matches to start the fire.
Upon hearing this, Old Li’s face grew even more displeased, and he wanted to say something, but considering the stubborn temperament of his second son, he softened his tone and pulled up a small stool to sit down beside him.
Li Hongjun, hearing some movement, turned his head, "Dad, you should go back and lie down for a bit; when breakfast is ready, I’ll bring it to you in your room."
Old Li didn’t move, he stayed there until Li Hongjun had lit the fire and then added two ladles of cold water to the large iron pot.
"Hongjun, stop what you’re doing for now and sit down, I have something to say to you," Old Li called his son over.
Li Hongjun glanced at the iron pot, set aside the basin he was holding, and decided to listen to what his father had to say while waiting for the water to boil, so he sat down again and faced Old Li.
However, Old Li suddenly didn’t know how to start; after all, this was a matter between the couple, and as the father-in-law, it didn’t seem right to interfere. At that moment, he especially missed his wife, who would normally take the lead in such situations.
"Dad, what is it that you want to say? If it’s nothing, I’ll go wash the rice, the water in the pot is about to boil," Li Hongjun asked with a frown; he was wondering whether he was hungry or not.
"It’s nothing serious, I just wanted to ask, do you do this at home too?" Old Li said after a moment’s thought, deciding to speak up.
"Do what?" Li Hongjun asked, puzzled by his father’s vague implication.
"At home, you make breakfast? Your wife sleeps?" Since he had brought it up, Old Li thought it best to clarify.
This time Li Hongjun understood what his father meant, and his frown deepened even more.
"Dad, what are you thinking? At home, my wife is the one who cooks; I’m training every day, and even if I wanted to help, I don’t have the time," Li Hongjun said, not wanting their relationship to deteriorate further, so he chose to tell a small white lie, "I told you earlier, Yunfang was just tired from yesterday, so I let her sleep in a bit more." He hadn’t expected his father to make such a big deal out of it.
Li Laotou indeed took this as a serious matter, but he felt much more at ease about what his son had said, "That’s good, it’s not that I have any particular ideas, but since ancient times, it’s always been that women should wait on men. Yunfang might be a college student now, but at home, you’re still the one in charge. If you do everything at home, won’t people laugh at you for being afraid of your wife? How would you hold your head up among your colleagues later?" Li Laotou believed he was imparting life experience to his son, and once he started, he went on and on with his teachings.
Li Hongjun just listened, neither agreeing nor objecting, and when he saw the water in the pot had boiled, he finally spoke, "Alright, Dad, I get it. I can handle it myself, so you don’t have to worry."
Li Laotou thought his son was taking his words to heart and nodded in satisfaction, walking towards the house. As he pushed the door to enter, he stopped, turned his head, and said, "Call your wife to get up in a bit. It’s the New Year, it’s not proper for a daughter-in-law to sleep in on the kang." With that, he went inside.
Li Hongjun frowned. At this moment, he realized that he really couldn’t let his old dad go to his place. If they really ended up living together, there would be no peace in the days to come. His wife was not to be trifled with. Of course, he wouldn’t let his wife be wronged either.
Now thinking about it, after the fifth day of the New Year, he would go with his elder brother to visit that Madam Xue’s house. If it was feasible, he would quickly settle the matter.
That day, Shen Yunfang finally slept until she naturally woke up. When she opened her eyes, Li Hongjun was sitting on the kang, seemingly reading some book.
"Where did you get that book from? Why not sleep a bit more?" Shen Yunfang yawned.
"I lay down for a bit already, I got up when the kids woke up." He had made the dinner, dealt with his father’s gloomy face, set the food for him, and then came back to cuddle with his wife and catch up on sleep.
However, the kids woke up not long after, and to avoid waking his wife with their noise, he dressed them one by one and sent them out to play. He didn’t feel sleepy anymore, so he pulled out a book from the table next to him and started reading.
Shen Yunfang stretched a big stretch, feeling like she had finally come back to life. But as she moved, something flowed out from within her, reminding her that they had made love that morning, and she had fallen asleep without cleaning up.
"Go fetch me a basin of warm water, I need to wash up," Shen Yunfang commanded like a queen.
Li Hongjun, acting like her little servant, didn’t say a word, swung his long legs around, and went down from the kang to fetch water for his wife.
Taking advantage of this, Shen Yunfang quickly got up, changed the dirty bedsheets, and, too embarrassed to wash them there, tucked them into her space to wash later when she got home.
Once she had wiped herself clean in the room and tidied up neatly, she looked at the clock and saw it was already ten o’clock. This was the latest she had ever gotten up at her in-laws’ home.
Li Hongjun brought the breakfast into the room, and only then did Shen Yunfang realize that this fool had actually been waiting for her to have breakfast together.
She glanced at the two bowls of millet porridge and more than a dozen bean buns on the kang table. She lost her appetite at the sight, and there wasn’t enough food for two anyway. With a wave of her hand, she took out some tasty food from her space, thinking that she definitely had to reward her silly husband.
"Come on, you’ve worked hard all night. Eat something good to replenish your strength," Shen Yunfang teased her husband.
Li Hongjun was not at all polite and happily accepted, even reversing the roles and picking up some vegetables with his chopsticks for his wife, "Don’t just worry about me. I’m strong. I can satisfy you with or without food. You should eat more." He then muttered under his breath, "All bark and no bite normally, but you turn into a little chick on the kang."
"What are you saying, daring to complain about me?" Shen Yunfang pouted her mouth. She might be the mother of two kids, but with them not around, was she not still a delicate flower in her twenties?
"No, not at all, I’ve been wronged. When have I ever complained about you, tell me," Li Hongjun said teasingly.
"Go away, leave me alone," Shen Yunfang, unable to gain the upper hand verbally, went straight for a kick.
