Chapter 104: _ His Handcuffed Mate

Alpha Beowulf finally broke the silence that reigned upon them after Aceco’s request.

With a weary sigh escaping his lips, "It seems," he nodded. "...that we have no choice but to return."

Before anyone could agree, Aceco spoke up. "No," she said, startling them all with her unexpected defiance. "You will not all return. Not all of you."

Confusion clouded Rhett’s vision. Why wouldn’t Aceco want them all to come back? Wasn’t she the one who only just made a request from them now?

The fey was ever so mysterious.

Darius as the impulsive one that he was scoffed. "What do you mean, ’not all of us’?" he barked. "Does that mean I have to come back here again?"

Huh?

Did Aceco mention ’him’ coming back?

Darius’s bravado could be irritating at times. Nah. It WAS upsetting Rhett.

"No, Darius," Aceco replied, her gaze on them unwavering. "You will not be coming back either."

Ouch. Another punch in Darius’s ego.

Then, she did something even more unexpected. She pointed a slender finger directly at Rhett.

"It will be you, Rhett," she declared, her voice echoing in the space. "You will return, and you will bring the items I requested."

Rhett’s jaw dropped. 𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒑𝒖𝙗.𝒄𝒐𝒎

Him?

Why him?

He was just a Gamma, a low-ranking member of the pack compared to the Alpha and Beta. Won’t the Alpha and Beta feel offended?

As much as Rhett wasn’t a fan of Beowulf’s rule, he wouldn’t want anything that would cause confusion about his loyalty to his reign. The tradition was for all the wolves to be loyal to their Alpha.

And that, he was. He’d do anything for it to remain that way.

Before he could voice his confusion, Darius erupted in protest. "That’s absurd!" he bellowed. "He’s just a Gamma! I, the Beta, should be the one to come back or better, the Alpha himself."

It wasn’t that Darius was such a fan of Aceco, but his ego wouldn’t let him agree that Rhett was wanted and he – was not.

The Alpha placed a calming hand on Darius’ shoulder. "I agree, Darius," he said with a measured tone. "However, Aceco seems to have a specific reason for wanting Rhett to return."

Despite the Alpha’s attempt at understanding, Aceco remained resolute. "If it is not Rhett," she stated firmly, "then it is no one. Choose wisely."

With that final pronouncement, she closed her eyes and ensued a meditative posture, effectively shutting down any further discussion.

The message was clear: her decision was final.

Rhett sincerely hoped her wish would be granted. It was them who needed her help even though Aceco was obligated to help since the wolves got into this trouble because of the fey in the first place.

All the more reason why he had to investigate Liam’s words thoroughly before letting any of them get out.

The Alpha, recognizing the stalemate, released a heavy sigh. "It seems we have no choice," he muttered, his eyes meeting Rhett’s. "Rhett, you will return with the requested items as Aceco has instructed."

Rhett nodded his affirmation.

From her meditative state, Aceco gave them a send-off note. "The veil is thinning. You best leave before something unwanted wanders in."

Without another word, the three wolves made their way out of the hidden cavern. It felt like being spat out of a beast’s mouth - the feeling of walking out of the waterfall illusion and back outside. Albeit, a good beast’s mouth.

.

Upon arriving at the car, the driver slammed the car into gear and they soon were out of the vicinity.

.

When they arrived at the headquarters, the Alpha turned to Rhett with his expression serious. "We need those items Aceco requested as soon as possible," he reminded. "The sooner we locate this family, the sooner we can find the vampire’s den."

As if Rhett didn’t already know. He could scoff out in boredom right now.

Rhett met the Alpha’s gaze regardless. "It will be done,"

At that moment, Darius stormed off, jealousy apparent in his movements.

The Alpha gave a hesitant nod. "Report back to me once you have the items, Rhett."

Rhett returned the nod and headed back to the precinct where he was met with surprise. As he pushed through the steel doors, the familiar scent of disinfectant and stale coffee assaulted his nostrils. However, a new unexpected scent sent a jolt through him.

It was a scent that ignited a fire within his gut.

It was Isleen. His wolf confirmed it with his vibrant spurring to life even though Rhett’s eyes wanted to deny it. It wasn’t that he wasn’t happy to see her.

Happy was an understatement. But seeing her like that...

She sat handcuffed to a steel chair. Her strawberry blonde hair was disheveled, strands escaping the loose braid that held it back. Her shoulders were slumped and most confusingly, she sat handcuffed together with Brenda Marie Beasley’s daughter and a male wolf.

Yet, Rhett could see just her. His entire attention and concentration were on only Isleen as though she were the only thing existing in the entire world.

The sight of her in such a state hit Rhett like a tsunami. Raw and possessive desire flared within him. Hours had passed since their last encounter.

Hours that had done nothing to quell his yearning for her. But now, seeing her vulnerable – seeing her freedom taken away and trapped between those cuffs sent a fierce protectiveness roaring to life within him. It was such that eclipsed even his burning desire.

Who dared to put a handcuff over his mate’s wrists?

Ignoring the noises around him, Rhett began to March toward her. He needed to understand what was happening.

Why was she here?

What trouble had she found herself in this time?

His wolf howled within him, demanding to protect her. To shield what was his. But even as his initial instinct was to storm towards her, to pull her into his arms and shield her from whatever mess she’d gotten herself into, as he took a step forward, her gaze flickered up, meeting his.

And then, he saw it.

Shame twirled in the depths of her eyes. She hastily buried her face, probably ashamed of the state she was in.

That alone halted Rhett in his tracks. The last thing he wanted was to make her feel any more uncomfortable. With a growl churning in his gut, he forced himself to look away.

Ignoring the greetings and curious stares from the soldiers, he swung sharply on his heel and headed straight for his office.

The door slammed shut behind him with a satisfying thud — the sound was a poor substitute for the one he longed to make – the metallic click of those damn cuffs releasing her.

Sinking into his chair, he ran a hand through my hair, frustration welling up inside of him.

What had she gotten herself into? And how the hell did she end up here, with Brenda’s daughter, a person who ought to be grieving no less?
