Chapter 105: _ You Hate Isleen

Rhett thought of what to do. The moon knew he couldn’t step out of his office. To hell, he’d snap the head of whoever came in his way should he try to take those cuffs off her.

Isleen, his mate, in handcuffs? It was unthinkable. He slammed his fist on the desk, the sound echoing through the empty office.

It was better he remained here. But first, he needed to know what got her here. He punched in the intercom and rang Alistair.

"Alistair, come to my office, please."

Moments later, a knock sounded on the door.

"Come in," Rhett barked, his voice betraying his agitation.

The door creaked open a, revealing Alistair’s surprised face. "Sir!" He saluted. "I’m here."

"Isleen," Rhett growled, gesturing towards the lobby. "Why is she under arrest?"

Alistair frowned, his brow furrowing in confusion. "Honestly, sir, I was just as shocked when they brought her in. Apparently, she, her friend, and some guy were involved in a public brawl that caused some property damage at a store downtown."

Rhett scoffed. "Isleen? Fighting in public? That’s absurd."

Alistair nodded in agreement. "Exactly, sir. Witnesses say the guy was the aggressor, that he beat her and her friend." Rhett could see anger crossing Alistair’s face. "Doesn’t sound like much of a man to me."

Man?

The bastard would wish he was nothing by the time he was done with him; Rhett thought.

His fists clenched and his wolf straining against its bonds. He wasn’t surprised some punk would try something with Isleen, but the thought of her being hurt, of someone laying a hand on his mate - sent a wave of possessive fury crashing through him.

He had to rein himself in. Others saw Isleen as his son’s girlfriend, and any overly protective behavior would raise suspicion. He knew it’d be weird for her boyfriend’s Dad to be overly protective.

"Why are they still cuffed, then?" He forced his voice to sound level headed and asked.

"The cuffs are off," Alistair clarified. "We were just waiting for someone to bail them out. The guy, however, well, he’s going through processing."

"I’ll take care of that," Rhett stated, already reaching for his phone. "See to it he gets booked properly. And make sure it sticks."

Alistair nodded and left the office, leaving Rhett alone with his simmering anger. He couldn’t go out there while she was like that and not kill that young man.

Hence, he reached for his phone and dialed Kylo’s number.

"Kylo. Isleen’s been arrested. Get down to the station and bail her out. Now." He barked into his phone, hating that he sounded so disgruntled.

He hung up before Kylo could ask questions. He couldn’t handle it right now. The anger burning inside him was threatening to boil over. He wanted nothing more than to confront the guy who hurt Isleen, to make him pay tenfold for daring to touch her.

Yet, he couldn’t openly do it. He hated this hidden affection he shared with Isleen. Very soon, he’d make it as public as it should be.

Just as he slammed his fist against the desk, the door swung open and Farkas sauntered in. Farkas at once noticed the tension in the room even before he could fully walk in.

His usual jovial demeanor was absent and replaced by a curious frown. Farkas’ gaze swept over the room and finally landed on Rhett’s clenched jaw and narrowed eyes.

"Something wrong, Rhett? I thought you’d be happier now. Aceco has given us some direction towards the case, right?"

Tch. Direction indeed. More like she gave them more work to do.

Rhett sighed, gesturing for Farkas to take a seat. "Keep your voice down, Farkas," he muttered. "Aceco hasn’t shed any light yet."

Farkas pulled up a chair across from him, his eyes dimmed in concern. "What’s going on? Didn’t Aceco..."

"Aceco hasn’t shed any light on anything yet," Rhett interrupted with a dismissive hand. "In fact, things have gotten more complicated. What she did was give us more work to do."

He saw Farkas’s Adam Apple go up and down. "No – we have too much work on our plate now. What more work has she given us to do?"

Rhett went ahead to recount the entire meeting with Aceco to Farkas. When he was done, the first thing Farkas did was to snap a brow up.

"She wants you to come back alone?" He blurted out in wonder.

Rhett leaned in his chair, his tensed muscles calming. Thinking about another problem was taking his mind off of his fury over Isleen. "Yes. Strange isn’t it?"

"Very strange. Beowulf and Darius won’t like this." Farkas pointed out. "They might think you’re plotting with Aceco over something."

Tch.

He’d be damned before he could care about what Beowulf and Darius thought. What could those clowns possibly do to him?

Nothing.

"I don’t care about those two, Farkas. And whatever might be Aceco’s reason for the unusual request, I’ll be finding out when I go see her. For now, I’m more concerned about the information we’ve gathered from both witnesses. Finding the creature only meant Cora’s story might be the true one." Rhett tapped a finger on the table and pointed out.

Farkas, however didn’t seem to agree. "Don’t get it twisted, Rhett. That only justifies not even twenty percent of her story. It only meant she was telling the truth about how the family went out of the veil for the creature. It doesn’t justify every other thing she told us."

He knew that, but there was something pinching Rhett deeply about Liam. Something telling him not to believe him. It was more than just his intuition.

"But Liam’s story insinuates that the fairies are killers. You and I know that isn’t true. I met Aceco today and my trust in the fey entity has been rekindled."

Farkas chuckled knowingly. "Or maybe you are just too keen on not believing Liam. I know you, Rhett. Mind telling me why you don’t want to trust the little boy? Is it because he’s Isleen’s son? Is it because you don’t like your son’s girlfriend?"

Rhett’s eyeballs froze in place as he stared at Farkas’s serious face. Look at him, so sure he hated Isleen.

Like a possessed person, Rhett busted into a fit of laughter – surprisingly the second time that day. And it was all related to Isleen. That girl – what was she doing to him?
