Chapter 107: _ Manipulative Men
Drach’s bluster continued to fill the air, echoing off the walls of the precinct. "You can’t keep me here! Don’t you know who I am? You’ll be answering to the Beta for this!" He puffed out his chest, trying to intimidate the stoic soldiers surrounding him.
I scoffed.
All bark and no bite, that one. Men like himself shouldn’t be called men at all.
But the significance of his words - the mention of the Beta, settled uncomfortably in my stomach.
How deep would this rabbit hole go?
I hoped to hell that the Beta was a good man who knew what justice was like the Gamma. Like my– no, like Gamma Rhett.
But how exactly was Gamma Rhett planning to ’sort us out’ regarding bail?
Just as I was contemplating the potential pack politics we were about to wade into, a familiar voice boomed with stupefaction. "Isleen? What’s going on here?"
Kylo stood in the doorway, his brow furrowed in confusion. He looked— different. More polished, his hair styled in a way that screamed city life. In a way that screamed ’Cullen’.
I guess moving around with Cullen was influencing Kylo in a way. But the shock on his face when his eyes landed on me and Lupe was unmistakable.
"Kylo?" I stammered, hurt that Gamma Rhett resorted to using Kylo to help us out.
Somehow, I also was relieved that he hadn’t ignored or not cared as I had originally thought when he walked away. Still, he couldn’t bear to stand me, could he?
He was ashamed of me, was he not? Perhaps, he was disappointed in me. Did I fail Gamma Rhett?
Why was that making me feel like a piece of shit? Why, Isleen?
Why?
"Dad called me," Kylo’s explanation broke my thoughts.
His eyes traveled nervously between me and the Lupe. "Said you two got arrested and I had to come bail you out."
I pointed an accusatory finger at Drach, who was now glaring daggers at Kylo. "We got mixed up with a jerk," I spat. "This one here."
Kylo’s gaze followed my finger, his jaw clenching at the sight of Drach’s smug face. "What happened?" he demanded, shooting Drach an equally hateful glare.
Before I could answer, Lupe, who had been unusually quiet since Drach began his threat, began to sniffle. Tears welled up in her eyes while she clutched her hands closer to her face.
My heart ached for her.
Kylo saw her reaction too and the confused glint in his eyes spread even deeper. Taking a deep breath, I recounted the events from the moment we bumped into Drach to the brawl that ensued and the aggression.
Kylo’s jaw clenched tighter with every word, his knuckles turning white. When I reached the part about Drach calling me a lowly Omega, a trace of something fierce ignited in Kylo’s eyes. I saw his face literally turned red.
He lunged towards Drach with speed and clenched fists.
"You coward!" he roared, aiming for Drach’s face. "Picking on girls, that’s all you can do?"
I gasped, as I realized what was about to happen. Thankfully, the soldiers were quicker. They grabbed Kylo before his fist could connect with Drach’s fine face, restraining him with ease.
Phew!
Gamma Rhett wouldn’t like it if we caused another commotion here. I didn’t want him to see me every time there was trouble. It seemed I always was wherever trouble was.
Lupe, who had been watching the exchange with wide, tear-filled eyes, completely lost it. Her shoulders were wracked with sobs as she slumped onto the bench.
"This is ridiculous!" Kylo roared, jerking his hands away from the soldiers. "Let me go! I’ll teach that coward a lesson he won’t forget!"
"No, Kylo!" I screamed. "He is not worth it."
"Calm down, Kylo," one of the soldiers said calmly, though his stance remained firm. "We have our statements. This young man will be prosecuted for his actions. You can come down to the station later to file an official complaint if you wish."
The threat of prosecution seemed to deflate Drach’s clamor a bit, but he still maintained a belligerent air like he didn’t care.
A lie though. The jerk was a little scared now.
"You can’t do this to me! I demand a lawyer! And get my uncle here! You’ll all pay for this!"
"Pussy!" Kylo hissed at him.
He had finally managed to control his anger, though his chest heaved with residual frustration.
He turned to me. "Isleen, who’s the pussy’s uncle?"
"What did you just call me?! What did you call me?!" Hollered Drach relentlessly but Kylo paid him no need.
"The Beta," I replied.
Kylo muttered a curse under his breath. "So, this is the Beta’s nephew everyone’s been talking about? Why am I not surprised? I guess it runs in the blood."
Huh?
Did this mean the Beta was no better? Dear Lord, let me and Lupe not be in trouble after this.
A soldier gestured towards Kylo. "Kylo, come over here and take care of the bail, so you all can be on your way. We’ve got paperwork to finish."
Kylo grumbled but followed the officer’s instructions. One could tell they weren’t strangers by the way they conversed. Lupe, however, continued to hiccup beside me.
Girls shouldn’t have to cry this much over worthless men.
Finally, when Kylo was done, I remembered Liam. We had taken sinfully long here. I didn’t tell him we would take this long. My boy must be hungry.
Very hungry.
"Kylo," I began when he was back for us, then hesitated. "Did you go to my house with Cullen? How’s Liam?"
He nodded. "Yeah, we went. Liam’s fine. Cullen stayed back to watch over him."
A wave of relief washed over me. At least Liam was safe. I hadn’t realized how worried about my son I had been.
"Thank you," I breathed with a genuine smile tugging at the corner of my lips.
Lupe also mumbled incoherently beside me. "Thank you, Kylo."
"Come on, girls. Don’t thank me and let’s get out of here." Kylo ushered us up.
We all walked out of the station, but not without Drach’s enraged shouts echoing behind us. "Lupe! You can’t just leave me here!" he yelled. "Oh, you’ve been a bad girl. You know I don’t like bad girls. Come back here, Lupe. LUPE!"
I placed a comforting hand across Lupe’s shoulders. "Don’t listen to him," I muttered reassuringly.
I wouldn’t let a man take advantage of a meek woman. The most disturbing part was that even after all of this, Lupe would be mandated to continue to be this jerk’s mate.
Because tradition wanted it so. Arrant NONSENSE!
