Chapter 116: _Only Her

Every soldier in the pack sprinted to the ambush area in formation. Some were left behind to protect the headquarters, but Rhett had a bigger priority.

Isleen and Kylo wouldn’t have gotten home before this. They lost and certainly would have been caught in the ambush. So, he solo ran there on his slaying every vampire that got in his way.

He could already see Kylo in his wolf form, fighting off vampires and biting into them before they could get him. That was his son, he smiled.

Kylo did inherit his ferociousness on the battlefield. Had he not been so protective of Kylo, he would have enrolled him in the pack’s military. Kylo always fought like he was meant for it.

He was injuring and bringing down as many vampires as he could with his claws and fangs, his wolf heaving and imposing. It was only a shame that unless they cut off the vampires’ heads, they wouldn’t have an upper hand over them.

They had to wait until the pack soldiers arrived with silvers to slay them. Not that the pack members didn’t have weapons too but they had been ambushed, caught off guard, and unprepared.

Also at the time when they were celebrating and unsuspecting. He searched for her amidst the chaos. Amidst the spilling of blood, the screams, and the stench of death in the air.

Just then, he saw her. She was doing what she knew how to do best; being kind. She was shepherding some kids into a shield created by some fey. He smiled, proud of her and happy that she was safe.

His smile disappeared when a vampire grabbed her. Even Rhett didn’t see the vampire coming to the scene, the deaths, and everything else blurred around him just as he sighted her.

His senses and everything else only wanted to be aware of her. He should be ashamed. Vampires were slaying his people - the people he was appointed to protect, and here he was, daydreaming about his son’s girlfriend.

The vampire seemed to be saying something to Isleen. The sight of the vampire sent a jolt through him, a primal urge to rip it to shreds before it could harm her. He surged forward, a snarl ripping from his throat. Rhett wasted no time to approach them. He was almost there when a vampire lunged at him.

Yikes. He had also loose-guarded and was caught off guard.

He slammed into him with surprising force, momentarily knocking the breath out of his lungs.

This wasn’t part of the plan. He cursed his short lapse, his eyes blazing with fury as he grappled with the unexpected opponent. He couldn’t afford any distractions.

Rage warred with strategy in Rhett’s mind. The unexpected vampire was strong, its blows fueled by hunger. Rhett dodged a swipe aimed at his head, the wind whistling past his ear. He countered with a vicious jab to the creature’s chest, but it barely fazed the beast. They were locked in a brutal fight, each blow met with a snarl and a shower of sparks as claws met metal.

But Rhett was a seasoned warrior. He knew these creatures’ vulnerabilities. He feigned a left hook, then with lightning speed, drove a silver dagger he kept strapped to his forearm deep into the vampire’s exposed neck. A gruff shriek ripped from the creature’s throat as he recoiled, his crimson eyes flickering with disbelief.

The silver did its work swiftly. The vampire crumpled to the ground, its form dissolving into ashes within seconds.

Not wasting another breath, Rhett sprinted towards Isleen. The vampire that had grabbed her was saying something about how kids were distractions.

He’d show her that talking about kids was a distraction for her too. Rhett stabbed her from the back, his sword basking in her blood before he pulled it out and she fell down but burnt to ashes before she could even hit the ground.

When he looked at Isleen, he saw the fear in her eyes gradually curling into gratitude. He wanted to embrace her and tell her she was okay. Hell, he wanted to dedicate the whole night to protecting her and her alone.

But whether he liked it or not, Isleen wasn’t the only thing that existed. He had duty to attend to. Hence, he only barked one word at her before returning to fight.

At the end of the fight, he almost shed tears when he found her heavily injured and lifeless. He blamed himself. He should have gotten her to safety back then.

Yes, he was pained by the number of lives that the pack had lost. The number of good and innocent lives. Many were injured too. The pack was really at its lowest and most vulnerable time after this attack.

The vampires had come prepared. They came in tens and hundreds. The pack had lost so many soldiers too. Who and who they were, he would find out after the day was over.

He saw Liam holding Isleen, so he walked up to them. "Is she breathing?" He asked, trying to appear smug but breaking to shreds inside.

Her eyes were shut. She wasn’t moving too.

Before Liam could reply him, "Aceco!"

"Look, it’s Aceco! Maybe we won’t die after all!" Fairies and Elves shrieked, causing Rhett to turn in the direction of the object of their attention.

It really was Aceco. Was she insane coming out of her hiding place at such a time when they weren’t sure if vampires were still lurking around and waiting to strike?

Who knew? Maybe there just was one close to them, to him, and to anyone right now without even knowing it.

However, when he wanted to walk towards Aceco and beseech her to come help Isleen, he saw Kylo lying in the hands of a young man with Isleen’s friend lying beside them, both heavily injured.

What the hell was this?

He might not be able to express his fear and pain at seeing Isleen like that, but no one would question him for what he was about to do.
