Chapter 118: _ Van Helsing

After Isleen was treated, he watched her, Kylo, Liam, and the others stay to talk amongst themselves for a while until they left and headed in the direction of Isleen’s house.

However, from the heavy smoke that was coming from that side of the pack, he doubted Isleen’s house survived the fire. Whatever happened to them, he’d find out later.

Right now, they had already left, so he could concentrate on work. Aceco healed every one of the injured but at the end of it all, she seemed to have weakened.

Her earlier vibrant aura dimmed after she finished healing the last of the wounded. Even a powerful healer like her couldn’t expend so much energy without consequences

"Aceco will need to rest after this. Healing takes its toll on even her. Not after healing so many people." Said, a male fairy with a very very long hair.

Rhett nodded at him. "Thank you. We’ll take it from here."

After the civilians had all left and it was drawing near dawn, "We need to get you back, Aceco." Rhett informed her.

"No." She denied to Rhett’s greatest surprise. "From what has happened here, it is only a little time before the vampires wipe the Ravenwood pack off as well unless we act fast, Gamma Rhet." She said.

Even though Rhett wanted to get her to safety, he couldn’t help but agree to that. After what happened tonight, one more attack like this one was all it’d take for their pack to lose its defense totally.

Rhett signaled the soldiers around them to give them some privacy. Once they’d cleared the perimeter and he was alone with Aceco, "Alright, Aceco," Rhett said, his voice low and guarded so as to not allow their conversation to fall into the ears of a second party. "Let’s hear it. What kind of action are we talking about?"

Aceco’s silver eyes gleamed with a fierce determination. "First," she began, "we need to assess the damage and understand the enemy’s tactics. How many vampires were there? Were they working with any other creatures? I can’t believe a fairy could have helped them with the veil. It’s insane, mere thinking of it."

She seemed so pained. Looked and felt so betrayed.

Rhett recounted the events of the attack, his jaw clenching as he described the overwhelming numbers and their brutal efficiency. He told her everything he thought she needed to know.

He was a man who believed in tradition, culture, and hierarchy. Somehow, speaking with a divinely touched being like Aceco felt more reassuring and Rhett felt like they could actually brainstorm on a solution.

Tonight, he realized how far they were lagging behind. While they were busy trying to catch the culprit responsible for the deaths in the pack, the vampires were busy strategizing on ways to wipe them out.

Coming to think of it, he couldn’t help but think that those deaths were connected to the vampires just as instinct had told him.

What if those deaths were like a distraction? To keep them from focusing on the main threat and lead them on a wild goose chase in the pack?

But first, he’d talk to Aceco about this attack first and ask her later if it was possible for a vampire to drink wolf’s blood. Who knew?

Just like him, there might be a rare breed of vampire who could drink werewolf blood. That vampire could be the one lurking in the pack, killing random people to distract them all.

What if those killings weren’t even connected at all? He’d searched and searched, and yet, Isleen and Liam were the only connections he could find to the killings.

And it didn’t make any sense at all... for now.

What if the killer was picking on random victims? What if...

"They were fast and ruthless," he concluded his report to Aceco, his voice grim. "And yes, they seemed well-coordinated, not like a random bunch."

Aceco nodded with a frown creasing her brow. "This level of organization suggests a leader, perhaps a higher power backing them. Were there any sightings of a particularly powerful vampire?"

A powerful vampire?

He knew it.

The vampires taking on this war against all of the supernatural creatures didn’t seem like what the usual vampires would do. Vampires, as far as they knew were killing machines.

They just want to kill, spill, and drink blood. But these attacks, these missions that they’ve been embarking on, it was as though they now had a leader.

One powerful enough to control all factions of vampires. Could there be a bigger game to this? Were they busy finding a ghost killer when there was a much bigger ploy at play?

Rhett hesitated, and then, he remembered a legend. One he read in books. History books.

"I once read the Van Helsing book where a very powerful vampire, rumored to be the very first was awakened. He brought about great darkness until the powerful vampire hunters brought him down after lots of sacrifices. Could it be that those rumors in history books..."

Aceco’s eyes narrowed. "Rumors are valuable, Gamma Rhett. We need to investigate them further."

Suddenly, frustration struck her face. "Speaking of investigations, where are the Alpha and Beta? Shouldn’t they be here leading the pack during this crisis?"

Tch. Beowulf and Darius?

It was even so absurd that they didn’t show up during and after the fight. Even Aceco who should be away forgone her own safety to come help the people.

Rhett’s jaw clenched even tighter. This was a question he’d been grappling with all night. "That’s how they do things," he said bitterly. "They leave the fighting to us while they..." he trailed off, gesturing vaguely.

"Enjoy in their– duplex?" Aceco finished his sentence with a raised eyebrow. Disgust was apparent in her voice. "A pack thrives on unity and leadership, not cowardice."

Rhett let out a humorless scoff. "You’d think they’d understand that. But apparently, not all Alphas are created equal."

"Then it seems the burden of true leadership falls on you, Gamma Rhett," Aceco said with a steady voice. "Are you ready for it? You see, I had a reason for requesting to see you alone the next time. It is about something I sensed in you."
