Chapter 137: _ Revelation II

"If so, why then did they kill Aella and her husband?" Asked Farkas suspiciously.

With lips trembling, "T-they warned us that if I didn’t work for them to lift the veil, they would kill Aella and her husband next."

"And didn’t you work for them and lift the veil?" Rhett frowned and asked.

Lowering her head like a kitten caught in the act, Cora winced. "I did. I am the one who has been lifting the veil all these times."

"And did you get Reed killed too? Since he was last seen with you." Rhett wanted to know.

Cora shot her head up with widened eyes. "No, no. That’s not me. I never did that. I and Reed wanted to go find Aella and the others. I needed to act along and go help him find them anyway, but when we parted ways and agreed to meet at a rendezvous, Reed never showed up. When I found him, he was with that little boy and acting weird too. He was dressed in black and covered in blood and wouldn’t explain. He left with that little wolf boy. That was the last I saw of him before..." She couldn’t finish as she buried her head in her hands in shame.

Liam affirmed that Reed was covered in blood. He also asserted that he wore strange clothing but Cora never said anything about returning to the woods and Liam made it clear that she did.

Who amongst them both was lying about that piece of information? It was clear that Cora was a liar, but was Liam one too?

Time to find out.

He turned to Aceco. "Aceco?" He called the Aceco who was now moving around the apartment, observing something Rhett couldn’t see.

"Aceco?"he addressed her again, "could you perhaps verify something for me?"

Aceco, with her brow arched inquisitively, turned to face him. "What troubles you, Gamma Rhett?"

"Cora’s statement about Reed," Rhett clarified. "Is there any truth to her claim that she didn’t know about what harmed him?"

Aceco surprised them all by shaking her head before even reaching for Cora. "There’s no deception there, Gamma Rhett. Cora speaks the truth about that."

Did Aceco just confirm Cora’s words? If Cora had spoken the truth, then didn’t that mean Liam was lying about that piece of information?

But why would the boy lie?

Such kind of false witnesses could cause confusion and put the fairies on the losing end. He remembered Liam telling him firmly that the fairies could kill and he heard Reed hurting a boy in the woods together with Cora.

Was that a lie?

That was too big a lie for a twelve-year-old. Why did he lie then?

Why?

Rhett’s chain of thoughts was broken when Farkas scoffed. "But you haven’t even touched her, Aceco. I thought you needed to touch and read the energy emitting from her."

Aceco’s silver eyes gleamed with amusement. "Touch isn’t necessary, General. A trained healer of my rank can sense the aura a person emits, the ambiance of truth and falsehood. And all this while, I’ve been focused on reading Cora’s essence. It was me who discovered her first lie, so when I say this isn’t a lie, trust me."

An uneasy silence descended upon the room. The revelation took moments to register. Cora was somewhere on the floor still racking with probably remorseful tears.

Rhett sighed. The very fairy who had initially exposed Cora’s lies was now vouching for her honesty on this specific point. Rhett, after a moment of consideration, nodded. "We believe you, Lady Aceco."

He had no idea why he had such an unwavering belief in Aceco. He guessed he didn’t have magic like her but he could also sense the right person from wrong.

In the same way, he was able to tell that Cora was holding something back from the onset and also that Liam was fishy. This even raised his suspicions about Liam the more.

However, the boy being a twelve years old wasn’t helping too. Had it been an adult, investigating him would have been easier but it didn’t make sense for a twelve-year-old to be capable of these things he suspected him of.4

He then turned back to Cora with an unreadable expression. "Cora, if the vampires held the family hostage to blackmail you, why did they ultimately kill Aella and her husband? Wouldn’t keeping them alive serve as a better form of leverage?"

There was that.

Cora wiped her tears with a trembling hand before speaking. "They... they are ruthless creatures, Gamma Rhett. They barely think things through. They only know how to kill and kill. Perhaps they believed I wouldn’t discover their treachery, that I would continue working for them, believing they were still alive."

Rhett pondered her words and thought there was logic in her reasoning. He could very much believe that one without needing Aceco’s help. Everyone knew of how stupid and ruthless the vampires could be.

They were more like killing machines who only wanted to have sex, feed, kill, and manipulate.

One more thing though...

"...And how did you communicate with these vampires? How did they relay their orders to you? How do you know when it’s time to lift the veil?"

The thought that someone in the pack knew that these ruthless animals were going to attack and kept mute about it to the point of helping them carry out their plans was sickening to think about.

This Cora, she deserved a faith worse than death. She would have her punishment, but for now, they needed her for all the information there was. He personally had so many questions to ask her, but not now.

Cora sniffled back a sob. "There are— a few of them within the pack itself. We had a meeting point. It is a secluded clearing outside the territory. Every night, I would go there to check if they had any messages for me."

Wow. Had he acted upon his intuition and investigated this fairy earlier, perhaps, this attack could have been prevented.

From now onward, he’d keep logic aside and follow a hunch when he had one.

Just then, hope blossomed in Farkas’s eyes. "That’s good news! We can use that information to apprehend those vampires hiding amongst us!"

Rhett nodded in agreement. "We can and we will."

He couldn’t help but feel like they were finally leading somewhere in this war. If they captured all the vampires hiding in the pack and conducted a census daily to ensure all the surviving fey were complete, they should be safe until they came to a solution.

Turning back to Aceco, he said, "Aceco, with the situation as volatile as it is, I believe it’s high time you returned to the safety of your haven."

He wouldn’t want anything to happen to her under his watch. She was far too important. Imagine the great development they had made with just a night of her presence. To say there were three more of a higher rank than her apart from the fairy Queen and Elven King, they just might win this if they all worked together.

Aceco didn’t argue with him but only smiled. "Indeed, Gamma Rhett. Perhaps it is best."

With a farewell to them all, Aceco made her way towards the door. Rhett, however, insisted on driving her back. He just wanted to have some more words with her as he wasn’t sure when next they’d meet.

They exited the apartment, leaving Farkas with Cora, who was led back to the station for further questioning.

"Aceco, I have some things I’d like to share with you." He said.
