Chapter 138: _ A Special Vampire
Chapter 137
Aceco’s brow furrowed in concern after Rhett said he needed her take. "What troubles you, Rhett?" she asked with a gentle voice. "Tell me, what is it you wished to speak of?"
Rhett hesitated, his gaze flickering around the moonlit clearing. Finally, he met Aceco’s eyes with a deep sigh escaping his lips. "I need you to be unbiased, Aceco. But I know that’s very possible since the fey don’t lie." A wry smile touched his lips. "That’s precisely why I’m confiding in you."
Aceco fluttered her wings like a reassuring gesture for Rhett. "Speak what’s in your heart, Rhett. Remember, I am a fairy, and truth is the very essence of my being. There’s no bias in the heart of a fairy." 𝓃𝓸𝓋𝓅𝓊𝒷.𝓬𝓸𝓂
Rhett nodded and his jaw tightened. "That’s exactly why I’m confiding in you," He admitted. "What I’m about to say goes against everything we know about the fey being peaceful creatures. And what Cora just did only reinforces that."
Aceco’s antennae twitched. "What do you mean?"
"I investigated the wolf boy, Liam, whom Cora claimed was with Reed," Rhett explained. "His story...well, it paints a very different picture."
"Different how?" Aceco’s voice held a hint of apprehension.
"Liam claims Reed lured him into the woods, and tried to kill him," Rhett said. "He escaped only after hearing the cries of another wolf child and— Cora’s voice."
Aceco gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "T-that’s impossible! The Fey wouldn’t harm anyone, let alone a child! Spilling blood is forbidden!"
Rhett ran a hand through his hair, frustration etched on his face. "I know, that’s what makes it so unbelievable. But the boy... he’s too young to fabricate such a tale."
Aceco fluttered around him, her brow furrowed in deep concentration. This revelation shook her understanding of the Fey. They were creatures of peace, bound by ancient laws that forbade violence. Yet, here was a wolf
child claiming the opposite.
This was unlike anything she had encountered before. A fey creature, known for its peaceful nature, accused of attempted murder? It defied everything she knew.
"We need to know the truth," Aceco declared. "Bring this Liam to me. I can use my magic to discern if he speaks the truth. My magic cannot be deceived. But, I assure you that there was no trace of deception on Cora after her confession earlier. Perhaps, they had both gotten it mixed up somewhere, but I’ll know when I see the boy."
A little ounce of relief washed over Rhett.
Aceco, with her fairy magic, could be the key to unraveling this mystery and winning this war. "I’ll bring Liam to you as soon as possible," he promised.
Rhett, guided by the faint light of the approaching dawn, finally reached Aceco’s hidden haven and gently deposited her back in her secluded home.
"Thank you, Rhett," Aceco said, her voice filled with gratitude. "Find this Liam, and we shall get to the bottom of this mystery."
Rhett nodded. "I will."
They exchanged farewells, and Rhett turned, heading back towards the dark pack.
The city was just beginning to stir as Rhett entered the station. The events of the night chewed at him, leaving him physically and emotionally drained.
As he entered the precinct, the somber mood was palpable. The death of the soldiers and losses had weighed everyone down.
The few soldiers on duty, now changed into neat uniforms, saluted him sharply as he passed. Rhett acknowledged their greetings with a tired nod.
His destination was the interrogation room. Through the half-open door, he saw Farkas meticulously recording Cora’s confession. He decided to wait until they were finished.
Moments later, a soldier emerged, roughly pulling Cora behind him.
"Just a minute, please," Cora pleaded when she saw him. "I need to speak with Gamma Rhett."
Huh?
She wanted to speak to him? Aceco wasn’t here, so Rhett wasn’t sure what to believe from this tainted fairy. The soldier hesitated, his gaze flickering to Rhett.
Rhett nodded, deciding he wanted to know whatever it was she wanted to say anyway. "She can speak here."
Cora turned to face him, her eyes filled with a desperate glint. "It’s about the vampires," she blurted out. "They’re planning something big."
Rhett raised an eyebrow. "Vampires? What about them?"
"I–I don’t know but there was a day when I went to our usual rendezvous to check if there was a message for me. I found two vampires discussing about something, and while pretending to check for messages, I overheard them." She met Rhett’s gaze even though shame had made her look downcast.
Even more now, Rhett frowned. "Whatever it is, do tell, Cora." He urged.
"Yes, yes, Gamma Rhett." She nodded like a chicken thrown into a pool. "The thing is, I heard there was a vampire in the pack– a special one, they say. He’s undercover and on a very important mission. But from what they said, he was the type who could blend in amongst us without getting noticed as he’s very special and... ancient." She explained.
At first, Rhett had to gulp hard. He couldn’t quite place it but then, it fitted all of his confusions. If there was a special vampire, then he and Aceco’s discussion earlier wasn’t void.
It was on point. If he could blend in without being noticed, then what type of power could such a special vampire possess?
A power that could render him able to blend in. What could it be? Ability to walk in daylight!
Argh. That alone wouldn’t make such a vampire able to blend in since their skin and eyes would give them away, so what?
He needed to take Liam to Aceco soon and speak to her about this ancient vampire. Or perhaps, he’d go home, sleep, and ask the Moon Goddess herself. Yes, that exactly was what he’d do.
He needed to return home. And he needed to do it tonight.
"You did well to tell me this, Cora," Rhett finally said. "We’ll look into it. What else did you hear?"
Cora shifted her weight nervously. "Not much, sir. Just that they were worried about him being discovered. But they also said something about him being strong enough to change the tide of the war."
Rhett’s mind raced. A vampire strong enough to change the war? Was this the reason for the sudden and brutal attack? Were the vampires planning a final, decisive blow? He needed more information, but could he trust Cora?
"Why are you telling me this now?" he asked with suspicion.
Cora met his gaze, hurt burning in her eyes. "Because," she said, her voice gaining strength, "the enemy of my enemy is my ally, isn’t that right, Gamma Rhett? I may have made mistakes, but I don’t want to see my people destroyed. Perhaps by helping you, I can find some redemption."
Redemption, huh? Go find some in the cell.
"Take her away." He ordered.
