Chapter 139: _ Taking A Big Step

As Rhett watched her go, a faint call to order from in front of the investigation room caused him to turn his gaze to meet Farkas standing by the door.

"Heard that?" Rhett asked him without delay.

Farkas shut his eyes and nodded simultaneously. "I did, Rhett."

"So what do you think?" Rhett was already walking toward his office while Farkas followed behind.

Farkas sighed heavily. "I have been wondering what could have been killing those victims. I think I have my best bet now."

Farkas was a military advisor but he could also have a sharp detective skill. Rhett hadn’t thought of that, but he knew he had suspected those bite marks and style of killing in those victims to be that of a vampire.

However, the fact that vampires couldn’t drink wolf blood continued to kill that hypothesis. If there was a special vampire who was ancient and powerful enough to blend in the pack without getting noticed, he’d be hungry for sure at a point.

"Definitely, those killings..." Rhett breathed, turning to Farkas with fascination and genuinely glad that there was a silver lining behind this dark mishap that had befallen their pack.

"Might be his/her doing. There’s a high chance." Farlas finished for Rhett with a smile. "I think we’re finally making progress here, Rhett."

Rhett was about to agree to that when an epiphany hit him. Didn’t this just make it all complicated? How on earth would they locate this ancient vampire in their midst since he had blended so well that he’d had them all fooled all along?

Farkas noticed the change in his demeanor. "What’s wrong, Rhett?" He asked.

"I feel like this means we are to embark on a wild goose chase after this. How in the moon’s name are we to find this ancient vampire now? The fact that we are up against an ancient vampire even means we’re not ready for what’s coming. Look at us, weakened, we don’t have enough men and our pack is disoriented." Rhett pointed out, pocketing his hands.

Instead of the seriousness he expected from Farkas, his friend merely rolled his eyes. "You just can’t cut yourself some slack, Rhett, can you? It’s like you’re allergic to reveling in a minute of little wins."

"And you take everything carefreely, Farkas. There’s no time to celebrate wins that aren’t there. We lost men, lost families, and properties, and now found out that there is an even bigger threat than we thought and you speak of celebration? Celebrate what? Where’s the win? You mean LOSES?!" Rhett roared, unable to contain his anger and grief as they all came out in that bellow.

It called the attention of every soldier within range and paralyzed Farkas who rapidly batted his lashes like a girl dressed in a pink ball gown.

Rhett, knowing he had overreacted could only clench his fists, grimace, and walk away, ignoring all the eyes on him and Farkas’s shock.

He went into his office, and sat with his head buried in his hands as every emotion he had been trying to bury ran to him in quick succession.

The creaking of the door announced Farkas’s arrival but Rhett didn’t even accord him a single glance as he remained in his worrying position.

He braced himself for Farkas’ likely disapproval of his outburst, but instead, his friend’s voice was surprisingly gentle.

"You know, Rhett," Farkas said, taking a seat. "It’s okay to grieve. I know things have been ugly since last night and Alistair’s death must have weighed you down."

Rhett flinched at the mention of his deceased lieutenant.

No.

He didn’t want to hear it. Whatever it was about Alistair, Rhett wasn’t ready to hear it now.

He loosened and hardened his expression. "To fight back or prepare ourselves for the worse, as the military advisor, what do you suggest we do?"

Rhett wouldn’t dwell on sentiments. If Farkas wouldn’t see that, then he didn’t give a damn about it.

"Well..." Farkas sighed, leaning forward from across the table. "I’ve been drafting a plan for that and I think it’ll help strengthen our forces."

Good. This was what Rhett liked to hear. Right now, what they needed was action and more action. The more they slack, the more their chances of winning slim down.

"Prong one," Farkas said, extending a finger, "is defense. We shore up our remaining forces, tighten patrols, and double down on training. We need to be a fortress, unbreachable by any threat, be it from outside or within."

Rhett gave a nod more in exhaustion than approval. Defense was essential but it sounded stupid coming from Farkas, especially after knowing what they had just suffered.

"And how exactly do we attain that after it’s clear we lack the hands?" Rhett nearly shouted in frustration again.

Farkas chuckled and put a hand on his chest. "Patience, Rhett. We don’t have the manpower, so we create one."

Rhett raised a brow mutely, the tension in the atmosphere rising.

"I suggest every family in the pack, both wolf and fey give up their first male children for one month of training of war. We recruit them, train them all, and after a month when they are ready, we take the fight to the vampires ourselves. We destroy them, group, by group, we join hands with every wolf pack interested in this fight, every surviving fey, and finally, the humans and we destroy these sinful creatures of the darkness for good. This time, Rhett, let’s think big."

The first thought that crossed Rhett’s mind was Kylo. Didn’t that mean giving his boy up and sending him to the military, to war, and likely, get killed?

His throat suddenly felt hot. The thought of it was— daunting.

Yet, he knew Farkas was right. The vampires are clearly on a mission to extinct all supernatural creatures. It was either he made peace with the fact that were was a chance he’d lose his son in order to save him or he might actually lose him.

He’d like for Kylo to be prepared for what was to come. He’d like for the entire pack to be prepared for what was to come.
