Chapter 148: _ Mum, You Kissed Him!
Kylo seemed to relax a little. "Okay, good. Well, I should really get going."
He began to walk back into the corridor, perhaps, to go see his father. I also began to walk back in but I halted when he paused at the doorway, casting a concerned glance at me. "Sorry about encountering Dad, Isleen. I didn’t know he would be back so soon."
My cheeks burned even hotter.
This day was turning out to be a disaster. "Actually, it’s fine. Gamma Rhett was pretty chill about it all. He’s not angry, I assure you."
He gave me a knowing smile and it was as though he didn’t quite believe me. "I see. Well, I guess Dad must be in his room then, right?"
"Yes," I confirmed, relieved he wasn’t pushing the issue.
"Great. See you later, Isleen." He flashed a quick smile before disappearing down the hallway.
Sighing in relief, I went back into the guest room where I surprisingly found Liam awake, staring out the window while Lupe remained fast asleep.
The sound of the door jolted him and caused him to turn toward the door. "Mum! I was wondering where you went." He said, running to me.
"Hey, champ," I forced a smile and kneeled to his level. "Just couldn’t sleep, so I decided to grab a glass of water."
He frowned, his brow creasing in a way that reminded me of Kylo’s earlier concern. "But wasn’t Gamma Rhett just in the kitchen?"
My heart skipped a beat. D– did Liam see us?
Oh, my day. That would be tragic, especially since he had casually mentioned Cullen and Kylo’s secret innocently. He probably didn’t know that he had just dumped the two in trouble.
How much had he seen, or worse, heard between me and Gamma Rhett?
"Uh, yeah," I stammered, "but he— he left just before I got there."
Liam’s gaze darted towards the entrance then back to me. "He wasn’t mad you were awake?"
My stomach churned. "No, no, not at all," I lied, hating the way my voice trembled. "Why would he be?"
"Because I came to find you and saw him punishing you, so I ran because I didn’t want him to punish me too." Liam said and that was where he lost me.
Half of my face creased into a frown, "Gamma Rhett was punishing me, how?"
"Like this." Liam blurted out and before I knew it, his lips were on mine.
I almost couldn’t believe it and pulled him away fast. "What was that for?" I sternly questioned him.
Liam was twelve, so he definitely knew what a kiss was.
"B–but Gamma Rhett kissed you, mum. Why can’t I?" He threw his hands in the air.
Gosh.
As much as I wanted to scold him, I had to remind myself that he was just a curious kid.
"Liam, sweetheart," I began, forcing a calm tone. "Gamma Rhett wasn’t punishing me. He..." I trailed off, unsure how to explain the encounter and eliminate that perception off Liam’s mind.
"He wasn’t?" Liam’s brow furrowed in confusion. "But you said he wouldn’t be mad you were awake, and then you said he wasn’t punishing you. So what was he doing?"
"He was just... talking to me," I finally managed, hoping it would suffice. "Sometimes grown-ups greet each other with a kiss on the cheek."
Liam seemed skeptical. "But you weren’t kissing on the cheek, Mum. It looked like you were kissing on the lips, just like you kiss me goodnight."
Heat flooded my cheeks. Was there any way out of this conversation without revealing the truth? A desperate thought struck me.
"Well, honey," I said, trying to sound lighthearted. "Sometimes grown-ups have special greetings for each other. Like a secret handshake, but with a kiss."
Liam pondered this for a moment, his brow furrowed in thought. "A secret kiss?"
"Exactly," I said, hoping he’d drop the subject. "Now, how about we both get some sleep? We had a big day yesterday, remember? And I haven’t pretty much slept well." 𝓷ℴ𝓿𝓹𝓾𝒷.𝓬𝓸𝓂
Liam didn’t seem satisfied with the explanation, but he didn’t ask anymore which I was grateful for. He snuggled back into bed beside me , his eyes heavy with drowsiness.
Relief washed over me, as I pulled him closer, hoping the warmth from my son would chase all the daunting thoughts away.
But it was short-lived. Liam’s innocent question echoed in my mind: "But you weren’t kissing on the cheek, Mum. It looked like you were kissing on the lips..."
If Liam by chance mentioned this to Kylo or Cullen, I was done for. Really done for.
Oh, heavens, I hoped to hell that Liam forgot this before morning. Sleep became like a long-lost friend I couldn’t wait to be reacquainted with.
Slowly but surely, I finally slept.
This time, I had a very peaceful sleep. Experiencing Rhett’s touch was really a painkiller. That man was my peace.

.
I woke up to noises and chatters, echoing all around the house. Stunned, I struggled to get up, wondering just how long I had slept for. Liam and Lupe were nowhere in the room too.
"Argh," I groaned, stretching.
I staggered out of bed, went to take a quick shower, and had a change of clothes before heading out to go find out the reason behind the noises.
I would have fretted about Liam’s whereabouts had I not known that he was in good hands. I had the perfect people surrounding me.
It made the idea of losing them all or betraying any of them very dreadful. Yet, it seemed like the seed of betrayal had been sown within our midst and there was nothing we could do about it.
The only thing in our power was to wait for the inevitable consequences that were looming. Moon Goddess, you did this to us, so help us. Help us through these testing times and do not pull us all apart.
Even if Kylo and I weren’t meant to be together, I really hope we can be friends. We were such a great pair.
