Chapter 165: _What Have You Done To Me?
Isleen
~~
Seeing as Liam wasn’t on the bed, I went to the bathroom, just to check if he was there. Nothing.
For some reason, I felt worried now. Flashes of the night before crossed my mind, causing me to panic about my son’s whereabouts.
"Liam?" I called out as I rushed out of the room, and then down the stairs, sounding louder than I’d wanted.
I had this nagging feeling that something was wrong.
"Liam?!"
Just as I got to the living room, I paused in my tracks, sighing in relief. Liam was right there, looking curiously at Cullen and Lupe as they seemed to be arguing.
"Mom, I’m here!" Liam tilted his head, looking as innocent as ever. His voice startled me at first, but then I held my chest, relief washing over me.
I rushed to him, pulling him into an embrace.
"Liam! You scared me half to death, where did you go?" I pulled him out of the hug, holding him like I would never see him again.
I didn’t know why I was like this. It was probably all the pent-up stress from last night.
After talking a bit with Lupe, she talked about the both of us going to check out her house, to have an idea of just how damaged it was.
I was touched. She was still keen on the idea of us moving in with her, at least until we found another place to call home.
I ate some food prepared by Lupe with ingredients from Rhett’s kitchen. Then, after getting ready, we were off. I needed to talk to her about a few things anyway...girl to girl.
"So, I saw Gamma Rhett back at the house." Lupe cast me a glance, a knowing smirk on her lips as we walked through the pack grounds, greeted by noises of both wolves and fey going about their daily activities.
I rolled my eyes, shoving her playfully. "Well, duh. It’s his house, remember?"
Lupe chuckled. We still had a while before we reached our street.
"Come on, I know you saw him too. And if you did, I’m guessing something...happened?" Lupe pressed on, raising her brow with curiosity.
I couldn’t help blushing hard. I was just playing hard to get. Truth was, I was glad Lupe knew about Rhett and me. At least, now I had someone I could share my love life with.
"Fine." I drew in a deep breath, making sure to lower my voice. "We saw each other, yes. And he was so nice. He spoke to me sweetly and promised he would make our relationship public if I let him. And then we agreed to see each other tonight." I stared dreamily at nothing in particular, as images of my interaction with Rhett played in my head.
My mate seemed to be changing positively. He was showing more emotions around me, and that made my heart soften more for him. The man was always so full of surprises.
Suddenly, Lupe held my shoulder, shrieking with excitement. "He promised what?! Tonight? What’s happening –"
Before the blabber mouth could say anything more incriminating, I held her mouth, gazing around at the people walking past us in a panic.
"Why stop just shouting at the top of your voice?" I spat, my tone brimming with sarcasm. "Why not just go ahead and broadcast everything at the local news station? I’m sure it’ll make headlines."
The girl was unbelievable! She was almost making me wish I had mind-erasing powers. Maybe I didn’t need someone to share my secret concerning Gamma Rhett with after all.
Lupe heaved heavily under my hold, flushing red in embarrassment. "Jeez, I’m sorry. But I didn’t mention who it was we were talking about." She then looked around, smiling awkwardly at a woman who walked past us with a curious gaze on her face.
"Don’t worry, your secret is safe." She finally whispered to me.
I merely grunted in reply before continuing.
"Anyways, I feel kinda nervous. What if things get heated and we...’ do it’?" I felt my stomach dancing nervously at the thought.
Rhett had talked about biting me again. What if that led to something more? What if he–
"Oh, relax Isleen." Lupe giggled. "You shouldn’t be worried about having sex with him. He’s your mate, it’s only natural. Besides, you’re no longer dating Kylo, and I’m sure you’ve had enough experience in that department with him."
Lupe’s words only managed to make me more nervous. I looked away as we walked, our arms interlocked. I chuckled awkwardly before I spoke.
"That’s the thing though, Lupe. Me and Kylo never actually...had sex." I finally let the cat out of the bag. Just then, Lupe paused abruptly, causing me to pause as well since she was still holding me.
"You...you guys never had sex?" Lupe repeated my words with a whisper, sounding like what I’d said was some groundbreaking discovery. What was her deal?
"Yeah." I shrugged. "I mean, we’ve done a lot of...’ oral stuff ’ and all, but we never actually got down to the main deal. He kept saying we weren’t ready."
Lupe shook her head, giving me an almost pitiful look. "Oh dear. First, you dated a closeted gay guy and now you’re dealing with the fact that his dad is your mate. Your love life is crazy."
I rolled my eyes, causing Lupe to giggle out loud.
"It’s not funny, Lupe," I grumbled. "And hey, we don’t know if Kylo is gay. He could be Bi. His feelings for me were real, I’m sure of it."
We were already on our street now, walking past some burnt-down buildings. My eyes lingered on some houses that were already under reconstruction, and some new buildings were even being worked on.
The Raven wood pack would come out stronger from this. There was still hope.
"Bi, gay, straight...whatever." Lupe flipped her hair with her hand, obviously not regarding most of what I said. "It’s his loss if he’s never had sex with you. But that also means you’re technically a virgin. Oh my gosh, giving your virginity to your mate who loves you!" Lupe wattled her eyelids dreamily. "It’s like out of a fairytale."
We both laughed at her words as we finally reached her house. We stepped inside and I immediately felt the gloomy. The pack’s officials had finished their investigations in the house, but they still had no updates on who the murderer was.
I glanced at Lupe, seeing the trepidation in her eyes. I couldn’t imagine how it must’ve felt, to see her mother’s naked corpse covered in blood on her bed.
"I can still smell her..." Lupe trailed off absentmindedly, her eyes wavering. She looked like she was about to break down in tears.
"Hey." I held her shoulder and gave her a comforting smile. "It’s okay to grieve. It’s okay to miss her. But you can’t let that stop you from living your life. She wouldn’t want that for you."
I honestly felt bad for Lupe’s mom. Yes, she was a bully who picked on me for being an omega on literally the first day I met her, but she was also a mother. The mother of my friend.
Looking at Lupe now, I remembered how I’d felt after losing my parents. The way I’d cried myself to sleep every night. I’d been alone, with no one else in the world. Until I met Kylo...
I shook my head. Focus Isleen, your friend needs you!
Lupe held my hand which was still on her shoulder, squeezing it tightly as she forced a smile. "Thank you, Isleen. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine."
With that, we held each other’s hands, walking around the house. The living room and kitchen were still very much intact. But the rooms upstairs were the main issue. The roof had almost been completely burnt down, leaving the scorching sun rays to prickle our skins.
We were currently in Lupe’s mom’s room, and I couldn’t help shivering silently when my eyes scrutinized it. It was the most affected room in the building!
"Why does it feel like whoever caused these fires was specifically trying to get rid of evidence of what happened to your mom?" I ended up blurting out my thoughts, hoping my words weren’t insensitive.
Luckily, Lupe seemed unfazed by all that, instead nodding in agreement. "You’re right. Do you think whoever killed my mother was also out there causing the fires during the attack?"
I nodded my head. I didn’t ’think’...I felt sure of it. It seemed like way too much of a coincidence. Heck, even her mother’s bed had been charred beyond recognition. I didn’t need to be a detective to see the connection, especially since the murderer was most likely a vampire.
Lupe drew in a deep breath, ruffling her hair with her hand. "Oh, by the moon. I’m so exhausted."
I nodded in agreement. I already felt like going back to the comfort of Rhett’s mansion. To the comfort of his embrace.
When I remembered that I was going to meet him privately
tonight at the precinct, I couldn’t help blushing to myself.
Argh! Gamma Rhett, what have you done to me?
