Chapter 166: _ Going To War
Going To War
After a few more minutes of Inspection, Lupe and I concluded that it would take a week— give or take— to rebuild the damages on the house. The problem was...money.
Lupe wasn’t sure her mother’s insurance would cover the costs of the renovation. So, it seemed she’d have to work until she could raise the money.
We headed back to the house, brainstorming on ways to get more money. Lupe was about to give up when she thought of something.
"Hey, you could get Gamma Rhett to help us." She whispered to me as we stopped by the market to get some ingredients for dinner.
I squinted my eyes, looking at her like she’d gone mad.
"Seriously?" I almost yelled. "Just because he’s the Gamma doesn’t mean he’s super rich or anything. Besides, our relationship isn’t even official yet. What if Kylo gets suspicious after his dad who’s seemingly hated me all this while, starts suddenly going out of his way to help my friend?"
Lupe bent her lip, contemplating my words. However, she shrugged soon after. "More reason why you need to confess to Kylo. I mean, it’s not your fault that your mate turned out to be his dad. And cut the crap about him not being rich. He’s the Gamma. Have you seen his house?"
We were both whispering, but I couldn’t help looking around with apprehension. I couldn’t imagine the entire pack knowing about me and Rhett’s secret. It was unheard of!
I sighed. "I don’t know, Lupe. I still need time. It’s not like I can just walk up to Kylo and be like: ’Hey, just wanted to let you know that I’m mated to your dad. He marked me and now I think we’re soulmates. Hope you’re cool with it?’ "
I made sure to sound as sarcastic as possible at the end. I was anxious. Each day that passed in my life made me feel like Gamma Rhett was right. Maybe I was cursed, for defying the moon goddess’s laws.
After getting the ingredients, we finally got home. Or rather, to Gamma Rhett’s house. I couldn’t call that place ’home’...at least, not yet. Gosh, what did I even mean by ’ not yet’? I wasn’t planning to move in permanently or anything... right?
On entering the house, we bumped Into Kylo who seemed rather tense.
"Oh, hey Kylo." Lupe waved sheepishly. He acknowledged her with a smile, his focus on me.
Her gaze wandered from Kylo and then to me, and I just wished she would take the hint. Finally, she excused us and went into the kitchen to start cooking.
"Kylo. I wasn’t expecting you back from work so soon." I forced a smile, my gaze meeting his. He looked stressed and it was so easy to tell too.
Kylo scratched his neck awkwardly, diverting his eyes from me for a second. "Yeah, we had to. Our building didn’t escape the destruction from the attack. It’s currently still under reconstruction, but it should be done in another day or two."
I nodded my head in understanding.
Just then, I remembered something. Liam. My little boy must be starving by now.
"Liam? We’re home!" I called out, looking up the stairs and expecting to hear him scurrying down any moment now. However, I was only met with a silent and awkward cough from Kylo.
"I honestly thought you guys had taken him along with you." Kylo frowned. "He’s not upstairs. I checked."
Those words hit me in the gut like a freight train. Liam wasn’t in the house? Then where the heck was my little boy?
I tried catching my breath, anxiety already getting the best of me. "Maybe– maybe he went for a walk around the pack grounds. Or, maybe he’s with Cullen. Yeah, they probably went out for a harmless stroll."
I said all that to assure myself rather than Kylo. I took out my phone and quickly dialed Cullen’s number.
Switched off.
I was panicking yet again.
"His phone is switched off." I threw my hands listlessly in the air. "That’s so unlike Cullen. He’s almost always on his phone and makes sure it’s charged."
Just then, Lupe walked into the living room, probably hearing my worried talking.
"What’s happening? Is Liam okay?" Lupe looked around, trying to read the room.
Kylo struggled to find the words to reply to her. So, I did it myself.
"Liam is missing, Lupe!" I felt my voice crack, as my eyes got watery. Why me? Why did all this misfortune have to befall me?
Lupe rushed to me, placing her hands on my shoulder. "Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay. Maybe he just went for a walk. What about Cullen? Have you tried calling him maybe?"
I nodded my head. "His phone is off. I don’t know what to do."
About thirty minutes later, Cullen finally came back. However, he too had no idea of Liam’s whereabouts. I couldn’t take it anymore.
After some thought, we all decided that Kylo and I would go to the precinct to file a missing person case. And maybe even inform Rhett, if possible. I didn’t want to disturb him before our meeting tonight, but I was running out of options.
Soon, we finally reached the precinct, and surprisingly, we met Kylo’s dad too. My wolf couldn’t help jumping with glee inside me upon spotting him, and when I saw the smile on his face, I thought he was equally as happy to see me.
However, when he got closer and addressed us formally, as usual, I couldn’t help sighing. Rhett would always be Rhett. What else did I even expect?
Rhett took us to his office, and it seemed like whatever he wanted to share with us was classified and top secret. But he was still willing to share it with us, just to help us. To help me. I couldn’t help blushing slightly at the thought, before reminding myself why I was really here.
After Rhett explained how the Liam I knew was a shape-shifting imposter taking the real one’s form, and that the real Liam had been dead for awhile, I couldn’t believe it.
Liam was, dead? He was being impersonated all this while?
I sank into my chair, trying to take it all in. It all made sense now.
Mr. Fenrir was murdered after he’d made advances at me, in Liam’s presence. Lupe’s mom suffered the same fate after insulting me in his presence as well.
These weren’t coincidences...they were the calculated actions of an ancient killer. One that I’d been harboring in my house. Whom I’d let sleep on the same bed with me, dressed up in his presence thinking he was ’asleep’.
Dear Lord, the bastard had taken advantage of my kind heart! Didn’t all this make me an accomplice?
"One more thing." Rhett’s voice brought me out of my thoughts, causing me to look at him. Probably looking for some emotional support or something. "Kylo, I want you to be strong. And to prepare yourself for what’s to come. You’re... you’re a warrior. One who’ll make this pack proud. And make me prouder than I already am."
I frowned, turning my gaze to Kylo who seemed equally as confused. Why did it sound like Gamma Rhett was bidding his son farewell?
"Dad, is something wrong?" Kylo asked cautiously. "Is the situation in the pack getting so dire? Are you going to war?"
I watched Rhett chuckle bitterly. I could almost feel the pain he felt. Like he was letting go of something so precious to him. But he did his best to hide it.
"I wish it was me who would be going to war, dear son." Rhett sighed. "However, it’s not. It’s you, Kylo. Tonight it will be announced that every firstborn son of each family in this pack who’s above eighteen, will be required to enlist in the army for a week or two of training before they’re taken with the main army to have the final fight against the vampires."
Kylo’s mouth opened in surprise at first, but then he gritted his teeth.
What?! Enlisted in the army? Kylo...my Kylo? We both looked at each other, and I couldn’t help but protest.
"No offense, but isn’t this Kylo’s decision to make? I mean, being enlisted into the army? What if he gets killed?" I felt my heart drop at the thought.
How could Rhett be so...so heartless? This was his son he was speaking of!
I watched Rhett drop his head In shame as he spoke. "You wouldn’t understand, Isleen. Our pack’s situation is desperate. This is the best I and the other leaders could think of, unfortunately."
I tried arguing it out more with Gamma Rhett, trying to reason with him that there had to be another way. Kylo couldn’t go. Not...not before I’d made my confession about his dad. Not before I’d apologized for ever thinking he didn’t care about me.
But It was no use. The Alpha himself had already given the green light on the mission. They were going to war.
