Chapter 190: The Annoying Beta

Rhett had a complicated look on his face as he also stared at Kylo.

A myriad of emotions flashed through his eyes, from pride to guilt and a nagging sense to protect his son. But he withheld himself, ushering Kylo to take his seat.

Rhett knew Kylo had work, so wondered just how he’d been able to come. Luckily, Kylo spoke, answering the question in his head.

"I took an excuse from work and so did so many other men out there. It was made mandatory by the military." Kylo folded his arms in front of his chest as he sat.

Oh, that’s right. That made sense, for the enlistment to commence, the military must’ve informed the different private and public organizations to give those workers who passed the requirement a few hours leave.

Before Rhett could utter a word, however, the Beta spoke up. "You two can continue your father-son bonding moment some other time. Now, Kylo, how old are you again?"

Kylo creased his brow slightly, looking from Rhett and then back to the Beta. He’d obviously taken offense at the Beta’s tone but chose to remain silent and ignore it.

Rhett smiled to himself. At least his son could control his emotions when necessary, just like him.

"I’m twenty-five," Kylo answered calmly.

Darius nodded with a satisfied look, managing to surprise Rhett a little.

"Perfect. Not too young but not old either." Darius turned to Rhett, giving him a smile that irked him to his bones.

He was one to talk. Darius kept complaining about how old some enlisters were as if he wasn’t an old sack of bones himself. And yet, even with being so advanced in age, he still acted so immature.

"What’s your turning speed?" Darius asked curiously, eyeing Kylo like he was trying to peer into his soul or something.

Kylo arched an eyebrow but then shrugged. "I’m not sure, but it should be less than five seconds, give or take."

That was close to average in Rhett’s eyes. In battle, a wolf’s turning speed could be a strong determinant of whether they survived or not, especially against vampires.

Darius scoffed, shaking his head. "I’d expected much better from the Gamma’s son. But oh well, that’ll do for now."

With that, Darius moved to the next question.

"So, Kylo, how would you rate your ability to work with a team?" Darius asked, but Rhett sensed contempt in his tone.

It was then that he remembered something. The Beta’s nephew... The idiot who’d dared lay hands on Isleen. Darius was probably aware of the whole thing and was taking his nephew’s side, using his influence to put pressure on Kylo.

Kylo thought carefully before speaking. "Uh, I’d say pretty decent. I’m not much of a people person, but I’m able to work with them to accomplish set goals, especially in the context of battle."

Darius smirked, causing Rhett to grow tense. Where was the idiot going with this?

"Do you remember Drach? My nephew." Darius finally uttered, just like Rhett had expected. Was he seriously bringing that up right now, when they had more pressing matters to attend to?

Kylo glanced at his father briefly, the latter telling him with his eyes to calm down. He then turned his gaze to Darius, nodding his reply. "Yes, I remember him. Why do you ask though... Sir?"

Darius shrugged, leaning back into his chair. "Nothing much. It’s just, I can’t help wondering. With the way your girlfriend assaulted him the other day, I wonder if her character hasn’t rubbed off on you."

Rhett clenched his jaw. Darius wasn’t talking to him, but he felt like he’d been slapped in the face. The Beta had talked down not only on his son but his mate too. He wouldn’t tolerate the slander.

"Darius, what’s the meaning of this? What do you aim to accomplish with this?" Rhett asked, his tone getting icy.

The tension in the room was palpable, as father and son stared daggers at the Beta.

"Isleen is my ex, Beta. And she had every right to attack your nephew. She was acting in self-defense after he hit her and her friend, his mate." Kylo clarified with an irritated tone, though he managed to keep calm.

Darius smirked when he saw Rhett’s gaze lingering on him still, a silent threat of what he’d do if he pushed things further. So, like the bitch that he was, he raised his hands in defeat.

"Very well then. Just be grateful that he didn’t press charges." Darius sounded aloof as if he was the most benevolent man in the world.

Rhett felt like saying something, he felt like mocking the man for thinking Drach would’ve had any legal ground if he’d pressed charges that day. But he let it slide, moving on with the screening.

After Kylo was done, he took his leave. He was asked to report to the precinct on the next day, before noon, just like others who’d passed the screening successfully.

With that, Kylo stood up, taking his leave. Rhett watched him as he left, sighing to himself.

How’d they gotten this way?

"Next!" Darius called out, completely ignoring Rhett.

.

Soon, they were done with the screening process. During the entire thing, the first males of each family weren’t the only ones who showed up. Some other male wolves also came, volunteering. Among them was Cullen, Isleen’s friend and roommate.

Rhett felt like the young man was too feminine for his liking, but he did seem to have a good set skills. He was enlisted eventually. They needed as many hands as possible In this war, and welcomed volunteers warmly. Or at least, he’d welcomed them warmly. Darius proved to be an ass all through.

Not wasting another minute after the screening had come to a close, Rhett stepped out, heading for his office back in the precinct. Once there, he locked himself inside, taking in a few breaths to calm his nerves.

Working with Darius had proved to be a jarring task. But the Beta had come out unscathed by him. If that wasn’t a miracle, Rhett didn’t know what could.

Suddenly, his phone rang, causing him to groan silently. He picked the call upon seeing that it was Farkas, and spoke with a gruff voice.

"Yes, Farkas, what is it?" Rhett queried brashly.

But Farkas didn’t pick any offense, instead cutting straight to the point. "We’ve successfully narrowed down the list of places the victim was last seen on the day of his death."

Rhett nodded to himself.

Finally, some progress. At this rate, they’d get the killer in no time. He hoped...
