Chapter 206: I Have My Eyes On You
The group jogged to the campgrounds, which were located somewhere in the woods, right outside the pack. On their way there, they chanted songs that spoke of their pride as wolves as well as their desire for victory.
Many of the pack members cheered at them, helping to boost their morale further. Kylo was able to pick up most of what they said, as they ran past them thanks to his wolf hearing.
"Oh look, that’s Gamma Rhett’s son!" He heard a young lady point out with a dreamy voice.
"So, they’re really going to fight against the vampires, huh? That’s a death sentence, for real." A young man commented with pity.
"Easy for you to say when you’re not a firstborn and can just waste your time away while the actual men are out there fighting for our safety. Isn’t Kylo around the same age as you?" A lady mocked the young man with a harrumph.
"I heard that Kylo now takes an interest in men." He heard a young lady comment out of nowhere, causing him to miss his steps and almost trip.
He searched for his father’s face, trying to see if he’d heard that. He was in his father’s line so it didn’t take long for him to spot him. He didn’t look the least bit concerned or bothered, probably meaning that he hadn’t heard the comment.
Kylo couldn’t help cursing under his breath. How did the pack members find out about his dealings with Cullen? He’d made sure he’d been extra secretive about it. But then again, it made sense.
People were bound to gossip, especially after he’d started walking around with Cullen— who was probably the gayest person in the pack if that were a thing —not long after he’d broken up with Isleen. It wasn’t too much of a big deal to him, but he wasn’t sure how his father would react to it. The man was so uptight about traditional values.
After several minutes of jogging, the group finally reached a part of the woods, right outside the veil. This part of the woods had been cleared and huge tents and structures had been placed all over. Some high-ranking pack soldiers stood guard at some spots, saluting Gamma Rhett and Beta Darius when they saw them.
Kylo breathed out with a little relief, but that relief soon disappeared when Darius spoke with a booming voice. "Alright everyone, the soldiers will guide you to the tents that you’ll stay in throughout the training! Each tent would have at least four people, mixed at random. So, use today to get to know your tent mates and bond with them." After he said that, the soldiers on standby did as instructed, guiding the people and assigning them to their respective tents. But while this happened, Darius turned his gaze to Kylo and Cullen who stayed back. "What’re you two sissys waiting for? Get down and give me five hundred!"
Gritting his teeth, Kylo got down and began doing the push-ups. While he did so, he momentarily glanced at Beta Darius, spotting the amused grin on his face.
As for his father, he had a disapproving frown on his face as he spoke to the Beta."This is too much, Darius. And frankly just a waste of ti–"
"Oh, spare me the meaningless words, Rhett." Darius snapped, giving the Gamma a look filled with contempt. "You’re just talking because your son being punished on his first day at camp wouldn’t sit well in your records. It’s obvious that you didn’t enforce the basic principles of discipline and respect in him, so consider this a favor."
Kylo ground his teeth upon hearing those words. He looked up, only to meet his father’s judgemental gaze fixed on him. His eyes went from him to Cullen, a hint of concern and suspicion fleeting past them.
"Those two need to chill, for real." Cullen suddenly muttered, doing his push-ups with relative ease. He glanced at Kylo, giving him a wink. "Someone looks extra uptight today. Come on, Kylo. Are you seriously going to let the old boomer’s words get to you? Lighten up, we’ll be done with these push-ups in no time."
Kylo could only grunt in reply as he concentrated on trying to keep track of how many pushups he’d done so far. His muscles began straining, as he gritted his teeth and got soaked in his sweat.
To his surprise, Cullen finished the pushups before him. He got up after getting the Beta’s approval and then squatted to his level.
"You see? Easy peasy." He said with a playful grin.
"Fuck off, Cullen." Kylo snarled through gritted teeth. He couldn’t believe that he’d been beaten by Cullen.
Had he really slacked off so much?
On hearing his last statement, Cullen purred with glee. "Oh, just give me a time and place, little pup. And I’ll give you the best time of your life, trust me." His voice oozed with lust and desire, managing to get him uncomfortable.
Eventually, he too finished his push-ups and was released by Darius.
"The two of you go meet the soldiers to show you your tent." The Beta said before stretching his arms like a cat. "Ugh. I need a power nap. Watch the fort for me, will you Rhett?"
Gamma Rhett who’d been standing there quietly all this while didn’t give Beta Darius a reply, as he had his gaze transfixed on Kylo and Cullen. Upon seeing this, the Beta harrumphed before walking into the camp.
"Getting punished on the first day..." His father finally uttered when Darius was out of sight. "Really, Kylo? Do you think you’re here to gossip or play around? This is war! You can’t let yourself slack off, even for a second."
After saying that, he turned his gaze to Cullen, scrutinizing him closely. What surprised Kylo more was how unbothered the former seemed even under his father’s scrutiny. He seemed rather amused actually.
"As for you, don’t forget what we discussed last time. Remember, I have my eyes on you. You’ll have to be more responsible if you’re going to be around my son and his... and Isleen."
Kylo’s brows furrowed into a frown. What was his father talking about? And did he just mention Isleen?
Without saying another word, Gamma Rhett walked away, leaving him to his thoughts. But then he realized that he could get some of his questions answered right now.
"What was my father talking about?" He queried Cullen after folding his arms in front of his chest.
