Chapter 207: Meeting Tent mates
"What was my father talking about?" He queried.
Something about the way Gamma Rhett had spoken to Cullen made Kylo feel uneasy. And the way he spoke like he was a bad influence or something, piqued his curiosity. He needed to know more. There was obviously something more to the conversation than his father or Cullen were letting on.
Cullen glanced at him from the corner of his eyes, grinning mysteriously before speaking with a cryptic tone. "Nothing to worry your handsome little head over." After saying that, he turned his gaze to the camp, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Let’s go meet our new tent mates."
And with that, he took the lead, walking forward. Kylo stared at his back, blinking awkwardly before releasing a frustrated groan from his mouth. With a sigh, he followed after Cullen, his eyes wandering around the campgrounds.
The camp was surrounded by trees... all standing tall with their thick leaves and branches casting a shadow over the camp. Several tents were dotted around the camp, and enlisters were already moving in and out of them while chattering among themselves.
Cullen led them to a table where one of the high-ranking soldiers sat comfortably, writing down some things and signing a few documents. But then, he raised his head when he heard the approaching footsteps of the two men, staring at them curiously from under his glasses.
"Good morning, soldier." Cullen grinned coyly, giving the soldier a wink. The man’s eyes joined together into a frown, but he quickly rushed to raise his hands.
"I and my... Friend, are here to sign in and be shown our tents." He said that with a confident look on his face.
Kylo hated how silent he was while he let Cullen yap away. So, he finally spoke with haste. "If you could do that immediately, that’d be great."
The soldier glanced at Kylo as if he were an ordinary passerby, then shifted his attention to the logbook in front of him, scanning it for their names with a pen.
"Ahh, there it is! Kylo Darkwater and Cullen Freeman. You two are under tent forty-eight and have two other tent mates." The soldier finally announced to their hearing. Then, he called another soldier to lead them to their tent.
After about two minutes of walking, they finally reached the tent, and the soldier left without even saying a word or goodbye. They stood there, looking up at the tent.
Kylo in particular, had felt awkward. This was a far cry from the comfortable life he was used to back in the pack.
"Are you coming or what?" Cullen’s voice pulled him out of his thoughts. Not waiting for his reply, he walked into the tent, leaving Kylo.
After looking around outside one last time, Kylo stepped into the tent too. His eyes nearly bulged out in surprise once he was inside.
The tent looked way bigger on the inside and actually looked like a room. There were four beds arranged at four different parts of the room and the floor was made of hardwood. Two wardrobes were also arranged at two sides of the room and it was illuminated by a warm blue light that made him feel at home.
"Hey." A voice suddenly called out. Kylo swerved his head to the source of the voice only to spot a man in his early forties waving at him. Upon taking a closer look, he found out that it was the same man he’d been asking about the fight between Drach and the elf back in the pack. "So, the Gamma’s son was put in the same tent as me? This just got a whole lot more interesting." The man grinned at the last part, making Kylo raise an eyebrow awkwardly.
His gaze scanned around the tent until he spotted another person... A fairy. This one looked like he was around the same age as him and had a pair of transculent bug-like wings that fluttered gently behind him. He only sat down on his bed, silently observing the interactions between him and the man.
Suddenly, Cullen came from behind Kylo, wrapping an arm around his shoulder before he could do anything. "Luckily for the two of us, our beds were placed close to each other. The other two have made their picks already." He whispered into his ear.
Kylo creased his brows. He meant ’unluckily ’. Who in their right mind would want to be so close to Cullen? They’d been sharing a room and a bed back at his dad’s house, and he knew how much of a torture that had been.
Just then, Kylo recalled something and turned his gaze to the older man in the tent. He didn’t like how he kept referring to him as ’the Gamma’s son’. He was way more complex than just being the son of an uptight Gamma.
"My name is Kylo Darkwater." He began with an introduction, after trying and failing to remove Cullen’s arm off his shoulder. Then he left his gaze on the older wolf, raising his eyebrows curiously.
The man got the memo, clearing his throat before speaking. "I am Osmond Blackwood. And apparently, I’m the oldest one here. But don’t fret, I’m not uptight or judgemental about traditions. I’m actually quite well-versed in things concerning the younger generations."
Kylo scoffed internally. No one asked for all that. He made sure to take a mental note that the man was a ’professional yapper’. But speaking of yappers...
"I’m Cullen Freeman. I look forward to getting acquainted with you all." He said, his grin only growing wider.
What. The. Heck?
That was it? Knowing Cullen, Kylo had expected a long ass introduction, probably longer than what the Osmond guy had said.
He couldn’t help glancing suspiciously at his so-called ’friend’. Something was off about him, and he was going to find out. He promised himself that.
Finally, everyone turned their gazes to the only fairy in the room. He looked shy, blinking awkwardly under their scrutinizing gazes. But eventually, he coughed and spoke with a surprisingly raspy voice. "My name is Celest."
Kylo nodded his head. Maybe having tent mates wasn’t such a bad thing after all. But only time will tell.
