Chapter 208: We Are Under Attack!
"Alright, Kylo, Osmond, Celest, and Cullen," Cullen uttered with an almost sing-song tone. Then he continued, much to Kylo’s annoyance. "We’re going to be the best team in the camp."
Celest and Osmond exchanged awkward glances while Kylo felt like sinking into a hole and hiding there. Yup... Cullen was still the professional yapper he knew. Maybe he was just being paranoid when he got suspicious of him.
"Say, Kylo..." Osmond suddenly spoke up, his gaze wandering from him and Cullen. "The two of you seem close. Is he your cousin, or...?"
Kylo’s eyes nearly bulged in a panic. That was enough. With one swift move, he was able to get Cullen’s arm off his shoulder. But the damage had already been done...
"Uh... He’s my friend. We’re just friends." He rushed to clarify, smiling awkwardly.
He caught Cullen grinning mischievously from the corner of his eyes but chose to ignore it.
He wasn’t lying, he and Cullen were just friends. Maybe even less than that. But the latter just couldn’t get that into his head and always acted like they were something more.
"Oh, okay. That’s cool." Osmond nodded his understanding, although he still gave Cullen a suspicious look. But luckily, he let it go and didn’t ask any more questions. Instead, he stretched both his arms lazily before saying. "Boy, I’m famished though. Does anyone know what the eating situation within the training camp is like?"
Kylo could only shrug cluelessly at that. He didn’t know much about military training camps, but knowing how rigid the Raven Wood pack was, he had his doubts about the living situation here.
First off, he hadn’t seen any toilets or bathrooms when he’d been looking around earlier. Meaning they might have to do their ’businesses’ out in the open.
Secondly, but most importantly, food. Apart from the tents that dotted the campgrounds, Kylo had only been able to spot three other buildings, all made of wood. He wasn’t sure yet, but he could guess that one of those buildings would be used for foodkeeping and as a kitchen of sorts.
"Ugh, don’t tell me the military brought us here to starve?" Osmond groaned before crashing on his bed. Talk about drama queen...
Kylo went to a free bed, sitting at the edge and letting his mind go through different thoughts. Being in the training camp felt almost surreal.
He remembered how Isleen had tried convincing his father to reconsider his stance on the enlistment program, all to no avail. He also just then realized that many of the enlisted people and volunteers here probably had a worried mother trying to hold them back from leaving. Who tried convincing them to stay back? But Kylo didn’t have that.
He’d never known the love of a mother. He’d never experienced her worry or concern. It made him feel lonely sometimes. 𝑛𝘰𝑣𝘱𝑢𝑏.𝘤𝑜𝘮
But when he realized that Isleen had been concerned about his well-being like a mother would, he smiled to himself, stifling a chuckle. He had to admit, he was already missing that naive little ex of his. He couldn’t help wondering what she was up to right now...
"What’re you think about, ’friend’?" Cullen suddenly sat beside him, managing to burst the imaginary isolation bubble he’d placed on himself.
You’ve got to be kidding...
He said the last part with such obvious sarcasm that made Kylo grit his teeth. With a frown, he spoke to Cullen with disapproval etched on his face. "None of your business, Cullen. You should do that more, you know? Minding your business."
Surprisingly, Cullen laughed in response to his words.
Kylo glanced at his tent mates, sighing with relief when he saw Osmond trying to take a nap. However, he nearly fell off his bed when he saw Celest looking at them with an indescribable gaze. The fairy didn’t as much as flinch, even after he gave him an awkward stare.
"Get off me, dude," Kylo muttered to Cullen, feeling an overwhelming sense of unease wash over him. Saying he was uncomfortable was an understatement.
One thing he didn’t want was people suspecting he and Cullen’s ’friendship’. He’d seen the way his father had addressed him earlier and didn’t want to imagine his reaction if or when he found out that his son had something more with the shady wolf.
Cullen however, seemed unbothered and was about to say something when an alarm blared. The alarm sounded like a tornado warning, piercing into Kylo’s ears. It blared repeatedly, making it hard to ignore.
"What the fuck is going on?" Osmond jolted up from his bed, looking around with confusion.
"It sounds like a warning drill," Cullen noted out loud, seeming frightened.
Kylo felt something eerie about the alarm. There was something wrong. His father and Beta Darius had clearly stated that today would be for them to get used to each other and get acquainted with their tent mates.
It seemed rather off and chaotic for them to say that and then sound an alarm, putting them on their toes.
"It’s not a drill." Kylo stood up, an overwhelming sense of dread gripping his body. His instincts were on high alert, as he quickly went into battle mode. "Everyone, stay focused. We might be under attack."
Trust Osmond to holler out loud. "An attack? As in, vampires? But this is literally our first day! What kind of sick joke is this? We haven’t even had any training."
Kylo ignored the older wolf’s ranting, as he stealthily headed for the tent’s entrance. But then, a loud voice bellowed through a megaphone throughout the entire camp, startling him. "This is not a drill! We are under attack by vampires. Everyone’s focus should be on defense and survival until help arrives. Again, this is NOT a drill!" It was his father’s voice, managing to sound calm even in the face of the impending danger.
Kylo swerved his head to his tent mates, his leadership skills taking action. "You heard the man! Celest, can you cast any protection spells on our tent?"
The fairy looked tense but eventually nodded before simply answering. "Yeah."
Kylo nodded and was about to assign tasks to Cullen and Osmond when a bone-chilling screech interrupted him. He turned his gaze to the entrance of the tent and felt his heart drop to his stomach when his eyes met those of the figure standing there.
A vampire!
