Chapter 214: The Beta Is Dead

Fergus felt the life force leaving Darius’s body as he drank his blood. He reveled in the feeling. It was one of a kind and unmatched.

"P– please. If not for m–me, s–spare me for my... daughter." Darius still managed to speak even as his life slipped away.

Fergus arched an eyebrow, impressed with his resilience. However, no amount of begging was going to make him spare the Beta.

He ignored his pleas, watching with glee as he began squirming under his hold. The room was quiet, the only sounds that could be heard being the Beta’s desperate gasps and his legs shaking violently on the wooden floor.

Eventually, after two grueling minutes, Darius stopped breathing and moving altogether. But his eyes remained wide open, showing the last emotions he felt in his final moments... Pain and regret.

And just like that, the ’great Beta’ of the Raven Wood pack had fallen. His eyes were sunken into his skull, his body becoming pale like a ghost.

"Ahh... Fergus, you’ve outdone yourself." Fergus praised himself as he got up, licking off the blood on his lips. He looked around the room, scrutinizing the scene.

Blood painted the room’s walls, ceiling, and even furniture, and lying amid the horrendous scene were four dead bodies, one of them belonging to an important figure in the pack.

Fergus never actually had a plan to kill the Beta so soon. But, after he’d punished him and Kylo, he was dead in his eyes. No one humiliates him like that and gets away with it. And so what if he didn’t know that he was actually a vampire in disguise? At the end of the day, the wolf’s ignorance will be their eventual downfall.

Fergus took a glance at the scene outside the window and was taken by surprise. He knew it...

The powerful fey magic that he’d felt earlier belonged to none other than the stupid fairy healer, Aceco.

She flew gracefully above the camp, her wings fluttering like a butterfly behind her. She had her arms stretched like a goddess, as she cast a powerful spell. The spell caused her body to light up like a mini sun, sending down rays of light that enveloped the camp.

The vampires screeched in unison, as some of them were caught in the light. The light wasn’t as powerful as sunlight, but those of them who stood close to Aceco were affected, getting burnt but not dying still.

"Retreat!" One of the vampires squealed, as it ran into the night. Soon, others followed, trying desperately to avoid Aceco’s wrath.

"I guess that’s my cue." Fergus sniggered as he took one last glance at the Beta’s corpse.

With one leap, he got down from the window and then used his vamp speed to run into the night. The sun had just set, allowing his brethren to retreat easily.

Once he got close to his tent, he paused and then used normal walking speed to reach the front of the tent. It was still surrounded by Celest’s magic barrier but Fergus could pick up the whispered bickering of Kylo, saying something about how ’reckless’ he was.

Fergus smirked to himself. He’d successfully gained Kylo’s trust and now the lad cared about him. Something the dumbass Cullen wasn’t able to accomplish.

After clearing his throat, he tried touching the barrier to see what would happen. As expected, it burnt his skin slightly, causing him to withdraw his hand with a scowl.

"Hey guys! It’s me, Cullen. Open up!" Fergus yelled out, growing impatient. If he had his way, he could easily use brute force to just break down the barrier within a minute or less. Celest was impressive, but his magic stood no chance against the might of a vampire like himself.

"Cullen, you absolute moron!" Kylo bellowed from within the tent as he, Celest, and Osmond moved to the entrance. "Where the fuck did you go? I’ve been w–"

He paused, swallowing his next words as he looked away awkwardly. Meanwhile, a smirk crept across Fergus’s face, as he delighted in the Gamma’s son’s confusion.

"One second," Celest said as he stretched out his hands. After making a few hand gestures, he waved his palms toward the barrier, causing it to dissipate.

"I told you, Kylo. I couldn’t just sit back and let innocent people die." Fergus feigned a righteous tone, as he stepped into the tent after a little hesitation. He could easily tell from the blood and sweat that covered Kylo that he too had gone out there, except with him, he actually wanted to help the wolves.

"Right. Then how come I didn’t see you anywhere when I went out there? I picked up your scent but I wasn’t able to pinpoint where you were due to all the chaos. Eventually, I gave up after helping out a few wolves and went back into the safety of the tent." Kylo spoke so fast, as he crossed his arms in front of his chest, giving Fergus a suspicious look. His gaze lingered on the blood covering his face and body.

Osmond and Celest were also looking at him, their eyes filled with questions. Questions that he’d never tell the truth about.

"I was fighting off some vampires at the outskirts of the camp," Fergus said calmly, and neither his tone nor expression gave away the sadistic pleasure surging inside him.

Eventually, Kylo let it go, choosing to believe him. The group sat down, sharing each other’s experiences in the battle.

"Aceco just arrived," Fergus revealed nonchalantly. However, Celest had his eyes bulged as he grabbed him by the shoulder.

"Wait, really? But... Why? She’s supposed to keep herself protected." Genuine worry flashed through his eyes as he asked.

Fergus eyed the fairy, weighing the odds of him just biting off his hands and getting away with it. But eventually, he only spoke with a snarl. "No touching, dude."

Celest twisted his lips into a thin line, as he awkwardly withdrew his hands. Just then, a loud domineering voice sounded across the camp, coming from a megaphone.

"All enlisters, gather at the center of the camp. This is not a drill. The Beta is dead." The voice belonged to none other than Gamma Rhett, who managed to keep a calm voice even with the severity of what he just said.

As for the other tent mates, they had their eyes bulged with shock as they all started mumbling to themselves.

"What did he just say?" Celest asked, looking like he’d seen a ghost.

"Moon goddess have mercy!" Osmond exclaimed, brushing his hand through his hair. "This is just the first day and the Beta is... Dead? We’re doomed!"

Meanwhile, Fergus sat there quietly, smirking coldly to himself. Little did they know that the Beta’s killer was seated among them.
