Chapter 217: A Mysterious Shadow

Rhett jolted his eyes open, swerving his body to the side as his eyes met with that of the vampire. Its red eyes gleamed in the darkness, its fangs bared ferociously at him. He held his gun tightly beside him, and just when the creature was barely a foot away he brought it out.

With a bang, the silver bullet went right through the vampire’s head, causing it to screech in pain. But eventually, it fell with a thud, shaking violently on the ground before dissolving into ash.

Rhett’s face was emotionless as he kept aside his gun, drawing out his sword instead. He needed to save his bullets.

With a leap, he shot himself several feet into the air, before landing on top of a female vampire who was about to claw at an unsuspecting enlister.

The enlister was an elf, struggling to stay alive under all the chaos. The vampire clawed and snarled violently underneath Rhett.

"Well, well, well. If it isn’t the famed Gamma of the Raven Wood pack himself?" The vampire spat sarcastically, her face almost buried in the ground.

Rhett however, kept an emotionless face, as he turned his gaze to the elf, who was still shaken with fear. "Run! Get back to your tent and try as much as possible to hide and survive until help arrives."

However, that brief moment was enough for the vampire to take him by surprise, as she gathered enough strength to shove him off her body. He fell to the ground with a groan, but he quickly fixed his eyes on the vampire, ready for action.

"Hahaha. Foolish Gamma! The Dark Lord will have your head soon enough." The vampire hissed maliciously as she was about to sprint away. However, a bang resounded around the area, followed by smoke coming out of the vampire’s head.

There was a hole there now... A bullet-sized hole. Rhett turned his head to the source, his eyes widening when he spotted the person responsible.

Kylo.

His son simply glanced at him, barely lasting a few seconds before turning his gaze back to the Vampire. A silver bullet to the head or directly through the heart was usually also enough to kill them. However, some could be resilient enough to survive it long enough to inflict harm, which was why Rhett usually preferred using swords against the bloodsuckers. That way, he could easily sever their heads off their neck.

"Kylo, what’re you... What’re you doing here?" He stuttered, batting his eyes curiously at his son. But the boy didn’t reply to him at first, instead pointing his gun again at the vampire.

With another bang, he sent a bullet through her head, causing her to stop moving. Soon, her body dissolved into ash, leaving her clothes behind.

After smiling slightly in satisfaction, he finally turned his gaze to meet Rhett’s. "Just here to help, Dad. Is there anything wrong with that too?" The sarcasm in his voice was unmistakable.

The tension between the father and son was almost palpable, as they stared at each other for seconds even with all the screaming, screeching, and utter chaos surrounding them. But eventually, Rhett cleared his throat before speaking.

"Where did you get a gun from?" He quried sternly, his eyes going from Kylo’s face to the gun repeatedly.

The boy rolled his eyes before replying. "I snatched it off a wounded soldier’s body. I mean, I needed to put it to good use. Also, I’m kinda searching for one of our tent mates."

Rhett’s eyebrows snapped together in a frown as he went into thought. A tent mate? Could he be referring to... Cullen? Why were those two so close all of a sudden? It looked really suspicious to him, but he decided to remain quiet about it. For now...

"Whatever." He dusted his body as he got up, before pointing at the elven boy who still stood there, eyes shaking with fear. "Take him to a soldier so they can escort him safely to his tent. Then, you can continue searching for your... Friend."

Kylo eyed him for a couple of seconds before turning his gaze to the elf, a smile that hadn’t been present on his face when he spoke to his father, appearing on his face. "Hey there. Come on, let’s get you to safety."

He placed a hand on the elf’s shoulder before guiding him away. Rhett’s eyes followed his son’s back, as a weird sadness engulfed him. Where had he gone wrong with him?

Just then, he saw a shadow whooshing past him from the corner of his eyes. It moved at such a speed that seemed to exceed a wolf’s. It was definitely a vampire.

However, before he could turn to face the threat, it was gone. Seemingly disappearing without a trace.

A somber feeling washed over him as his mind went back to Lupe’s mother. The night that she was killed, he’d also spotted a fast-moving ’shadow’ from the corner of his eyes. Which later turned out to be the ancient vampire who was still disguised as Liam at the time. n𝚘𝚟pub.𝚌o𝚖

Could these two be related? Was the vampire right here, in the camp? How did the vampires know that today was orientation day and that the camp would be vulnerable?

He couldn’t help turning his eyes to the wooden building where he and Darius resided. The bastard was still cooped up there like a chicken, and he even had some soldiers there to watch his back. When would the Beta grow some balls and actually perform his duties properly? That seemed to be mission impossible at this point.

Choosing to ignore him, he sprinted toward the camp, following the scent of blood. It was obvious that lives were going to get lost in this attack. It was inevitable, in fact.

After what seemed like ages, help finally arrived in the form of Aceco, descending above the camp like a goddess of light. Her silver hair flowed like a river behind her as her eyes and body glowed with white light, imitating the light of the sun.

The light managed to engulf most of the camp, causing Rhett and many others to cover their eyes. As for the vampires, they all screeched in pain, but to his annoyance, the light didn’t kill a single vampire, instead acting as an inconvenience.

"Retreat!" A vampire roared and soon, they all sprinted into the night, leaving the camp as fast as they’d arrived.

Rhett squinted as he swerved his head back to the healer fairy. He would never get used to how she was so powerful but yet chose to not use her powers in cutting down those who threatened her and her people.

"Gamma Rhett, pardon my late entrance." She beamed with a smile as she fluttered gracefully, landing beside him.

Rhett glanced at her, a slight smile curving on his lips. "You mean a ’dramatic entrance ’." He paused, his eyes scanning through the aftermath of the attack. Some tents were destroyed and bodies of wolves and some fey littered the ground while many struggled to carry their injured. He gritted his teeth, his smile disappearing faster than it had come. "Too bad you couldn’t kill one of those bloodsuckers."

Without sparing Aceco another look, he walked away, leaving her to head for his office. He needed to contact the Alpha and relay the recent events to him.

When he got close to the building, however, he picked up the smell of blood coming from it. The place was eerily quiet, causing Rhett to squint his eyes.

Shit.

He ran to the building, climbing up the stairs. When he got to Darius’s room, however, his heart dropped into his stomach, as a cold shiver went down his spine.

The Beta was... Dead.
