Chapter 218: He Might Be Our Vampire

Rhett took a hesitant step into the room, scrunching his nose when the strong metallic scent of blood hit him.

The room was painted with blood, from the floorboards to the ceiling, but that wasn’t the most disturbing bit of it. Lying close to the entrance were the dried headless bodies of three soldiers, and from their position in the room, it was obvious that they’d been killed around the same moment that they stepped into the room. Meaning, that their killer wasn’t just one ordinary vampire.

Rhett wanted to make himself believe that they’d been attacked by multiple vampires all at once, but his common sense told him otherwise. There didn’t seem to be much of a struggle and the soldiers hadn’t even drawn out their weapons. Whoever did this was a calculative one-man army, killing them without hesitation after sneaking in.

He was also able to guess that the Beta was the one who called these soldiers up to their deaths to help him.

His gaze landed on Darius’s body one last time. His eyes were wide open, and he seemed to have this look of remorse etched on his face. In his final moments, the Beta was finally able to show actual remorse. But remorse for what? For how he’d been a shitty person?

Rhett scoffed to himself but his eyes flashed with pity. As annoying as the Beta had been, no one deserved such a death. And now seeing his lifeless body on the floor made him come to a logical conclusion.

Darius wasn’t a traitor.

"May the moon goddess grant you... Peace." He muttered as he closed the eyes of the Beta. He only pitied the Luna for the loss of her father.

After saying a little prayer, he rushed to his office and solemnly announced into the microphone. "All enlisters, gather at the center of the camp. This is not a drill. The Beta is dead."

He repeated the announcement two more times, each time feeling like a lump was stuck in his throat. Even he couldn’t believe it. The Beta who’d been so full of life and annoying the heck out of him as usual, was now dead.

He gritted his teeth. He had a feeling that this was the doing of the shapeshifting vampire. If the bastard was hidden among one of the soldiers or enlisters, he’d fish him out soon enough.

Before he left his office, he dialed the Alpha’s number, hoping he’d pick up but also secretly wishing he wouldn’t. Eventually, he picked up the call, his voice sounding a bit lively from the other end. "Ahh, Gamma Rhett. How are things at the camp going? Did Aceco agree to help us place a veil over it?"

Rhett swallowed his saliva, as he searched for what to say. He knew what to say but didn’t know how to say it without coming off as... Indifferent?

Finally, he cleared his throat before speaking with a grim tone. "Aceco just arrived but before her arrival, we were... We were under attack. We suffered losses from the vampires on our enlisters and the Beta..." He paused, waiting to hear Beowulf’s reaction to the other things he’d said before dropping the news about Darius.

However, the Alpha ignored everything else he’d mentioned, his voice quivering as he snapped. "The Beta? What about Darius? Where is he?"

Typical. Rhett didn’t know why he even expected anything more from the incompetent – Argh! This Alpha would make him say some blasphemous things one day.

"The Beta is dead, Alpha. Killed in cold blood in his room alongside a few soldiers trying to protect him. And I believe it’s the doing of the shapeshifting vampire." He responded calmly, relaying all his thoughts and every piece of information the Alpha might need to get a clear picture.

The other end was silent and the only thing Rhett could pick up was Beowulf’s rough breathing. He waited patiently, allowing the Alpha to take the news in. However, to his surprise, the Alpha finally spoke with a calm tone. "That vampire, Rhett. I want his head. I don’t know how, and I honestly don’t care how but you MUST kill him. Sooner, rather than later." He paused before adding with a sterner tone. "Do you understand me?"

Rhett drew in a deep breath before replying. "Of course, Alpha. I’ll increase my search for the–"

However, before he could continue, the Alpha hung up, leaving him with his thoughts. The nerve!

He sighed as he turned his gaze to the window, where he could spot everyone in the camp, both wolf and fey, gathering at the camp’s center which was surrounded by tall trees like the rest of the camp. Aceco guided them while directing some soldiers to set up a tent for her to commence healing.

He smiled wryly to himself. Maybe he’d been too harsh on the fairy healer. She’d helped them tremendously since she first arrived at the pack and had guided him with his problems too. She might not be too useful in a fight, but she was a very powerful asset nonetheless.

He sighed before strutting out of the building, throwing one final glance at Darius and the soldiers who had died with him.

On getting to the pack center, the place was rowdy with the bickering of the enlisters and soldiers. Some of them groaned and whimpered in pain as they made a line leading toward the tent where Aceco was healing the wounded.

He moved for the tent but as the crowd made way for him, his eyes caught those of someone he thought was no longer a suspect.

Cullen.

The wolf stared directly at him, his eyes nearly emotionless. He’d seen the death of so many people and could remain so calm? The Cullen he’d come across a couple of times in his house wouldn’t have reacted this way. He was extremely expressive and somewhat shy even when looking at him.

However, he didn’t let his gaze linger on the suspect for too long as he fixed his gaze back at the tent. He walked in, meeting Aceco healing a wolf on a table. Her fingers sparked with magic, as she waved them over his chest in a circular motion. Right there and then, all the cuts and bruises on him started covering up like they were never there.

Soon, he was healed and opened his eyes in surprise. But his shocked expression was replaced with that of gratitude as he thanked Aceco before walking away.

She turned her gaze to Rhett just then, creasing her brows worriedly as she spoke. "Are you okay, Rhett? Were you injured?"

He shook his head before replying. "No. But, I don’t think you should waste your magic with this Aceco. Remember we still have the veil to work on, right?"

The healer fairy rolled her eyes, much to his surprise, before speaking. "It’s not a ’waste’, Gamma Rhett. And don’t worry, I’m not running out of magic anytime soon. I brought some magic crystals that I’d been storing for special occasions like this. It’ll help me when the time comes to make the veil." She paused, her expression getting somber. "Sorry about the Beta’s death. He was... An interesting man."

Rhett almost chuckled to himself, remembering how Beta Darius had annoyed Aceco too back when they visited her alongside the Alpha. ’Interesting’ Indeed.

"That’s fine, Aceco." He gave her a reassuring nod before looking around. The people outside were waiting to get healed but what he was about to say was more important than any of that. "About Cullen, Aceco. I believe he’s... He’s more suspicious than I had

first thought. I’m not sure yet but he might be our vampire."

At that moment, he couldn’t help remembering Isleen. If Cullen turned out to be the vampire, that would mean he’d been unknowingly harboring a killer close to her. Close to his mate.
