Chapter 219: Saving The Best For Last

Upon hearing Rhett’s revelation, Aceco creased her brows, glancing around before replying. "If you have even the slightest suspicion Gamma, then keep it on the down low. We can’t let him find out."

Rhett nodded curtly. "Agreed. I’ll be heading for the Alpha’s house tomorrow after overseeing your creation of the veil. I need to give a documented report of everything that happened in detail. Also, I... I have to see someone important."

He blinked awkwardly as he remembered Isleen yet again. He couldn’t help wondering what she was doing right now. What was happening in her life right now that was in contrast to the terror that struck the camp today?

Well, there was only one way to find out, right?

"Very well, Gamma Rhett. I must commend you for your bravery, despite all the challenges coming your way. You have a lot more potential than you realize." Aceco blurted with a smile, before ushering in another patient.

Rhett’s brows joined in a frown as he went into thought. What did she mean by "he had more potential than he realized"? Did she perhaps know of his... Of being chosen by the moon goddess?

And he wasn’t trying to be brave anyway, he was just doing his duty as Gamma. While neglecting his other duties as a certain someone’s mate...

He excused himself and walked outside the tent. The chattering, sobbing, and whimpers of pain of the enlisters hit him like a wave, as they gave way for him to pass. Just then, however, a young lad that he knew too well and had hoped wouldn’t approach him finally did.

Drach... The late Beta’s nephew.

"Gamma Rhett!" He hollered, standing in front of him and blocking his way in the process. "Where... What happened to my uncle? Where is my uncle?"

The chattering of the people slowly died down as they all stared warily at the two of them. Even Kylo and the suspicious Cullen now had their eyes on them. Crap!

He knew how grief worked. This wolf was probably looking for someone to blame when he found out more about his uncle. However, as bad as Rhett felt about Beta Darius’s death, he wasn’t about to let this idiot get In his way or wrongly accuse him.

"Like I said, he’s dead. Killed by a vampire." As he said that last part, he couldn’t help throwing a blank glance at Cullen. It was so fast, so fleeting that he was sure no one would notice. Then he continued with an even sterner voice now "You’re in my way, soldier."

Drach’s lips formed a thin line, his eyes unwavering as he stared at Rhett defiantly. The tension was palpable as everyone held their breath in anticipation.

Eventually, the Beta’s nephew sighed before stepping aside, his gaze toward him still bitter.

Rhett walked away, calling on some soldiers to bundle up Darius’s body and also those of the dead soldiers. After that, he addressed the enlisted soldiers, telling them that training would commence the next day in the morning before dismissing them. It had been nothing short of a bloody night.

The next day after the camp’s first training, during midday, Rhett drove back to the pack. He was already missing the walls of the precinct and the simplicity of pack life. The bustling of civilian activities gave him a sense of normalcy away from the horrors he saw in the camp last night.

He made a stop at the precinct and stepped out of the car. He had three people he wanted to see today, and Farkas was one of them. He was saving the best for last.

"Well, well, well. The valiant Gamma himself." Farkas had a wide grin on his face as he walked up to Rhett, tapping him on the back. "How are things going in the camp? I hope the youths among the enlisters aren’t giving you a tough time. What am I saying... What about that annoying Beta? How’s working with him been?"

Rhett sighed, weakly replying to the greetings and salutations of the soldiers as they walked past them. He gave Farkas a side glance before replying. "Horrible. Everything is horrible."

The military advisor narrowed his eyes in confusion but Rhett ushered him into his office so they could talk more. Once there, he shut the door behind him before turning to him.

"What happened? You seem shaken, and that says a lot when it comes to you." Farkas queried with a worried look as they sat.

Rhett had a somber expression on his face as he explained everything that happened in detail. From the meeting with Aceco in her abode. To the attack from the vampires. Spotting that weird ’shadow’ running past him. And finally, the Beta’s death and the Alpha’s reaction to it.

Farkas had a flabbergasted look on his face, his eyes blinking awkwardly. But eventually, he breathed in before speaking. "Wow. Just... Wow."

Rhett shook his head and was about to explain further when the military advisor said something that threw him off guard.

"Well, I guess now you don’t have to worry about that stuck-up, annoying Beta. Good riddance." He shrugged.

He couldn’t believe his ears. Really? How could Farkas be so insensitive?

"As annoying as the Beta was, he didn’t deserve that death. None of the soldiers or enlisted people deserved that death. I can’t believe you just said that." He shook his head with a disappointed gaze.

Farkas’s face grew pale with remorse as he stuttered to explain himself. "It’s nothing like that, brother. I was... I was just trying to throw a joke. I didn’t mean to mock anyone’s death and I didn’t mean to... Alright, what I said was dumb. I’m sorry." He finally added with a wry smile.

Rhett simply nodded in reply, but his friend wasn’t having it. "Come on, Rhett. I didn’t mean it like that."

He rolled his eyes before speaking. "Whatever, Farkas. Anyway, this might just be proof that Darius wasn’t the traitor I thought he was after all. Leaving me with two other suspects who have possibly been leaking information to the vampires."

He didn’t mention who the suspects were, but his gaze said enough. Enough to tell Farkas that he was wary of him.

They talked a bit more before the military advisor took his leave, after feeling the tense atmosphere around Rhett. However, it didn’t take five minutes for him to pick up a scent. Someone else’s scent approaching his door.

His wolf growled with desire and his throat itched. He could smell her. He could feel her close.

Isleen.
