Chapter 228: Pestering His Life

Kylo

It took a long fight, but they were able to hold on against the vampires until Aceco’s timely arrival.

The fairy healer had always mesmerized him. The way she could always carry herself with this air of serenity and calm made him feel... oddly at peace. He couldn’t imagine anyone blaming the fey for their misfortunes. They were so close to actual divinity in his eyes.

When Cullen came back to the tent, he scolded him intensely but decided to keep it cool when he answered him like he’d always done. Nonchalantly.

When they were all summoned by Aceco to gather at the camp’s square, he felt an odd mix of emotions.

He’d gone out to search for Cullen during the chaos and had stumbled on his father struggling to fend off a vampire who’d seemingly caught him off guard. When he killed the creature with a gun, his father didn’t even acknowledge his help.

A simple ’thank you’ would have sufficed, but no. Gamma Rhett would always be Gamma Rhett.

Kylo shook his head, grunting to himself. He was used to his father’s lack of emotions toward him. And he honestly didn’t care anymore.

At first, he’d thought that the man blamed him for his mother’s death, but then again, his mother had been an old woman and her death had probably been a relief to his then-teenage father.

Argh! Why was he bothering himself about his father’s past now?

"Hey, you good?" Right on cue, Cullen placed a palm on his shoulder.

He turned to see him staring curiously at him as they waited for Aceco to heal the wounded. He’d sustained only minor injuries during the attack which his wolf was already healing. He was only there because his father mentioned that he needed to address all of them in person.

"I’m fine, Cullen. Quit being a bother." Kylo shrugged his palm off his shoulder, trying his best to ignore him. But how could he possibly do that when he was all over him?

"Come on, you look stressed. Talk to me, what’s up?" He persisted, sounding rather calm for someone who’d faced uncertain death.

A vein throbbed on Kylo’s forehead as he turned to Cullen again, a sarcastic smile stretching on his face. "I don’t know, Cullen. Maybe it’s because we literally got attacked and I saw people die. Actual people."

He was careful not to raise his voice at him since they were surrounded by other enlisted wolves and fey. However, Osmond, who was standing close by, turned to face them.

"Jeez, you two argue like a married couple." He muttered amusingly.

Kylo’s face grew a shade of pink as he subconsciously shifted away from Cullen. Maybe he should just keep his distance away from the blockhead.

After Aceco had finished healing those who were critically injured, his father stood on top of a makeshift podium, while Aceco stood beside him silently. She seemed a bit drained but was more powerful than she looked.

After looking down at the enlisted soldiers for a minute, his father cleared his throat before speaking.

"Training and regular camp activities shall commence tomorrow. You are to get out of your tents as soon as the alarms go off. Lateness will not be tolerated." He spoke calmly.

Again, it was amazing how his father could speak so blankly even after he’d witnessed so much death.

"We were caught off guard tonight, but we wouldn’t let the vampires distract us from our goals. We’ve lost a few promising soldiers and men today, but we must move forward..." his father continued talking with a grim tone.

The camp was dead silent as everyone stared at the Gamma solemnly. Soldiers, enlisted civilians, wolves, fey. Young and old. They remained silent, not daring to speak when he did.

Or, maybe they just understood the gravity of what he was saying...

"Make sure you rest well tonight. Tomorrow is going to be a long day." He finalized after several minutes of talking.

By the moon, the man could yap! Kylo’s legs were already getting tired and he felt like he could die of boredom at any minute.

After they were dismissed, they all walked back to their tents with heavy hearts.

Kylo couldn’t help remembering Isleen at that moment. She wouldn’t have been able to handle seeing all this death. But yet she’d defiantly suggested that she joined the enlisted soldiers back then. The girl was brave but naive.

He was the first person to step into the tent, followed closely by Cullen and Osmond. He’d made sure to increase the pace of his footsteps when the annoying Cullen tried talking to him, holding him, or generally trying to invade his personal space.

It seemed he was finally getting the memo as he let him be, sitting with a grin on his bed. Good.

"Holy moonlight, what a night, huh?" Osmond hopped on his bed, stretching lazily as usual. "Gosh, Kylo, your father sure is intense. He didn’t even flinch during his ’speech’."

Kylo rolled his eyes. He knew that was just a pitiful attempt to strike up a conversation with him. Unfortunately, he wasn’t in the mood right now.

"I’m stepping out." He announced abruptly as he got up from his bed. Not waiting for either of their responses, he walked toward the tent’s entrance but paused when he almost bumped into Celest.

The fairy seemed shaken, and he couldn’t even blame him. The fey were’nt really known for being able to handle death and violence.

He patted Celest lightly on the shoulder before stepping out into the night. Where was his destination? He had no idea. He just needed some air and alone time after everything he’d witnessed today.

He walked toward a tall tree that caught his attention, making sure to avoid being spotted by the few patrolling pack soldiers in the camp. Once he reached the tree, he sat beneath it, sighing tiredly.

He raised his head, looking into the starry night sky, stretching like a canvas above the camp and beyond. The moon was in its half phase, but still managed to illuminate the place with a calming light.

Just as he was about to let himself relax in the serenity of the moment, he picked up a snapping sound coming from a bush close to him. It sounded like someone had stepped on a branch or something.

He went into high alert, standing on his feet with his fists stretched out. He remained silent, wondering if it was a pack soldier. But when the person stepped out of the bush, he felt like hitting his head on the tree.

"Cullen, what the heck is wrong with you?" Kylo nearly snapped as he spoke in a hushed voice.

Cullen rushed to put his hand over his mouth, effectively shushing him. "Do you want to alert the pack soldiers?" He asked in a whisper, his face inching dangerously close to Kylo’s.

The latter mumbled before shoving him away, spitting to remove the taste of Cullen’s hand on his mouth.

Before he could vent his frustrations on him, however, Cullen brought out his phone.

"Before you attack me for ’pestering your life or whatever, I have something to share with you." He raised his hand, his eyes flickering with an unreadable emotion.

Kylo’s brows creased into a frown when Cullen played a recording from his phone.

And his frown only deepened when he heard the voice coming from the other end.

I–Isleen?
