Chapter 239: Little Miss Clueless
In the blink of an eye, two weeks had passed. To Fergus, it was one of the hardest two weeks of his immortal life.
The hard part was pretending so long to be ’comrades’ with the other enlisted soldiers as they slaughtered his brethren. Both sides lost people, but he felt like the loss was more on the vampires’ side.
He couldn’t believe it, but the pack soldiers and enlisted soldiers combined were a force to be reckoned with. The magic of the fey among the enlisted soldiers helped them considerably, even though they couldn’t use it for killing.
Now they’d all been dismissed back to the pack for a three-day break. But to Fergus, it was three days to start setting his plan in motion.
However, there seemed to be a little... Bump, in that plan. In the form of a seemingly ordinary fairy girl.
He tried to get Kylo to open up about his feelings for the new girl but it was a fruitless endeavor. He’ll have to keep an eye on both of them.
He’d heard and witnessed stories of wolves being mated to other races. Heck, he’d even seen a situation where a wolf was mated to a vampire. Talk about tragic romance...
Anyway, he had to get into the ongoing drama between Isleen and Kylo. Ahh... He loved drama.
"Is everything alright?" Fergus asked Isleen, feigning concern after watching Kylo walking out of the kitchen and going upstairs.
He’d heard pretty much all of their argument thanks to his supernatural hearing, but he still wanted to gauge her feelings for the Gamma’s son.
"I don’t know, Cullen. Does everything seem okay?" She threw her arms listlessly into the air, as her hand grazed the bottle of whiskey that Kylo had left behind.
A grin flashed past his face when he imagined Isleen wasted on the kitchen floor after having a little too much to drink.
Unfortunately, those images could only end in his imagination as he watched her keep the bottle of whiskey back in the wine cabinet.
Ugh, these wolves were no fun!
"You tell me, Isleen." Fergus leaned against the kitchen entrance, folding his arm in front of his chest as he spoke. "Why are you so pressed about what Kylo thinks about you? You have a mate and he doesn’t."
"Well, he has you, doesn’t he?" She muttered from the kitchen counter, her back facing him.
His eyes gleamed down her silky strawberry blonde hair, which fell like a cascade to her petite bum. Her neck was visible, and he could even spot her mate mark from this angle.
His fangs came out as he imagined sinking them into her neck. Sinking them into the same spot that the stupid Gamma Rhett had marked her.
As a sign of defiance against the wolves and their stupid customs.
However, in the end, he had to withdraw his fangs.
No, not yet. He couldn’t let himself have her yet. Rhett needed to be out of the picture first.
"That’s flattering, Isleen." He scoffed at her last remark before adding. "I’m not his mate, sadly. But hey, at least you have Gamma Rhett, right?"
She stiffened at that moment, her back still facing him. It seemed like she’d realize something.
Eventually, she slowly turned to face him, her eyes raised with suspicion. "Why did it sound like Kylo knew something about me and Gamma Rhett just now?"
Fergus wanted to laugh but withheld himself. Hmm... It seemed little Miss Clueless here wasn’t so clueless after all.
However, he gave her a dismissive wave. "You’re probably just overthinking it, Isleen." In a move to swerve her mind away from the situation to something more... Delicious, he asked. "Hey, where’s Lupe? Did she go to work or something?"
Hehe, it worked like a charm.
The suspicious look in Isleen’s eyes was now replaced with one of sorrow and pain.
Her gaze fell to an empty spot beside Fergus as she replied hesitantly. "She... She’s dead. Lupe was murdered." Her voice was shaky and it seemed like she struggled to hold back tears.
Yes! This was what he’d been aiming for from the beginning. To watch as she slowly fell into despair. To revel in the agony and guilt in her eyes.
To delight in the fact that he’d caused her so much pain only to help her get out of it.
However, he couldn’t show his enjoyment of the situation but instead, feigned disbelief and an Oscar-worthy expression of sadness. "W–what? How? Oh my gosh, Isleen are you okay?"
She nodded profusely, blinking awkwardly to hold in her tears. "Yes! Yes, I’m fine Cullen." A slight smile appeared on her face as she turned her gaze to him.
Fergus creased his brows into a frown. Hmm... Not the reaction he was hoping for. Had she gotten over her friend’s death so quickly?
Nah, that couldn’t be it. This was ISLEEN he was speaking of. The girl could sob for a random dead puppy on the road if she saw one.
There was something up with her. She’d tried hiding it, but he noticed the suspicion in her eyes when she greeted him after he and Kylo entered the house.
"Does Kylo know?" He asked, even though he knew the answer was an obvious ’no’.
She shook her head in response, suddenly deciding that she had to clean some imaginary dirt under her nails. She was anxious.
Anxious around him?
"I have to go... Take a nap." She stuttered, avoiding his gaze again.
She proceeded to walk toward the kitchen’s entrance, but he couldn’t help himself and held her back.
He saw the terror that flashed past her eyes for a couple of seconds, but then it was replaced by annoyance as she spoke softly. "C–Cullen? You’re hurting my arm." Her eyes went from his hand around her wrist to his face.
Well, that was the plan love. He enjoyed seeing her wince in pain.
But eventually, he let go of her wrist and raised his hands in defeat. "Fine. If you say you’re okay, then I’ll take your word for it."
They stood there, staring at each other with an awkward silence. Until...
"Okay. Bye." She hurriedly rushed past him, bumping into his shoulder in the process.
He swerved his head to follow her movements just in time to see her almost bumping into Kylo who was walking downstairs.
Kylo watched her climb up the stairs before turning to him. "What the heck is her deal?"
Fergus sniggered before shrugging cluelessly.
"Oh well." Kylo shrugged too before patting him on the shoulder. "I’m going to go outside and get some air. But don’t wait up."
Fergus frowned and was about to say something, but Kylo walked away, leaving him all alone in the kitchen.
The same place where he’d begun his torture of Lupe two weeks ago.
"To get some air, eh?" He repeated Kylo’s words with a mischievous grin.
Oh, he was definitely going to secretly follow the runt. Time for a little evening stroll.
