Chapter 241: One Step Closer
After settling Isleen into a hotel, Rhett had to go back to camp.
He had a lot to discuss with Aceco, especially concerning Isleen’s ’special ability ’. He also needed to fall asleep and see if he could communicate with the moon goddess.
It had been a while.
After parking some distance away from the camp, Rhett walked in and had a feeling that something had happened.
All the enlisted soldiers were currently being guided by the Pack warriors to the building reserved for food.
He searched for Aceco, knowing his instincts couldn’t be wrong.
Eventually, he found her sitting in a tent that’d been reserved for her. She seemed to be meditating, her back turned to him as her wings fluttered gently behind her.
"Gamma Rhett." She suddenly muttered, taking him slightly off guard. "How are things back at the pack?"
He blinked awkwardly for a few seconds before replying. "Fine... Or maybe not. Something happened, Aceco. There was another murder but this time, at my place."
Aceco stiffened, as she whipped her head to face him. "What? By the gods, was it a fey or wolf?"
He sighed. "It was a wolf, but does it really matter? This just complicates things more especially if Cullen is our major suspect. Hasn’t he been here all day?"
Aceco shook her head as she got up. "Don’t underestimate the cunningness of this ancient vampire, Gamma Rhett. He might’ve taken advantage of a time when we were all off guard. A time when we had something else to attend to." She looked like she was deep in thought as she rubbed her chin.
Of course!
"The veil!" Rhett suddenly blurted, his eyes wide with shock. "That’s it. You were still working on the veil this morning, before dawn. He must’ve snuck out during that time and came back before the exercise."
The sneaky bastard! It was oddly convenient that the murder had taken place at his house when Cullen had lived there before.
"You might be right." Aceco nodded with a sigh. "But then again, we still aren’t sure if he’s the vampire. We can’t afford to accuse someone falsely, especially not while the other enlisted soldiers are here. It’ll bring about even more distrust among them."
Rhett nodded in agreement at first but then paused, his brows creasing into a frown. "What do you mean ’more distrust’?" He queried warily.
He knew his instincts had been correct. Something had happened during his time away from the pack.
"The werewolves and fey had a heated argument caused by your late Beta’s nephew." Aceco smiled wryly. "The wolves, or at least most of them, argued that the fey were useless in the war and would only be a liability. And of course, my people had to defend themselves but things almost took a turn for the worse until I intervened."
Oh. The Beta’s nephew... He knew that brat would be nothing but trouble. At this rate, he’d tarnish Aceco’s perspective of the pack’s wolves.
"By the moon." He rubbed his temples with frustration. "Aceco, please. F–"
However, she raised her hand, shaking her head with a reassuring smile. "It’s fine, really. I understand the pressure your wolves are under. Lives have been lost and they’d naturally look for someone to blame."
After a pause, she asked. "Do you, by chance, know the wolf who was killed?"
Lupe...
"Yes, she was a friend of my..." He drew in a deep breath before continuing. "Of my mate. They’ve been living in my house after theirs got destroyed in the last attack on the pack, during the full moon festival."
Aceco tilted her head curiously. "Mate? Do you mean the Isleen girl who was almost denied treatment because of her Omega status?"
Rhett blinked, his mouth agape in shock. What... How? How’d she figured that out?
As if she’d read his mind, Aceco spoke again with a smile. "Oh, don’t be surprised Gamma Rhett. I told you, magic is my blood. A mate bond is a complex concept, but it’s still magical nonetheless. I was able to sense that celestial magic in both of you that night."
Rhett nodded his understanding. The fairy healer would prove more helpful than he’d first thought.
"Anyway, if you knew this wolf, then there’s a chance that the vampire killed her to send a message. Or maybe to throw you and Isleen off balance." Aceco paced around with a thoughtful look. "Or, what do you think?"
That the vampire was just a sadistic psychopath and didn’t need any reason to kill; Rhett thought but didn’t tell Aceco any of that.
But now that he thought about it, the vampire had always been calculative and cunning with his kills. Lupe and Nick’s murders both had one connection... Cullen was acquainted in one way or another with the two of them.
"I’m not sure, Aceco. But something still tells me that Cullen is our guy. It all points back to him." Rhett’s frown only deepened as his gaze traveled out of the tent.
Coincidentally, he was able to spot Cullen and Kylo walking out of the food building, chattering about something. The sudden closeness between the two was unsettling, to say the least.
"I may have a solution to this." Aceco suddenly muttered, her eyes gleaming with a little excitement. "If you’re able to find an item that both Cullen and the murder victim have touched extensively, then I’ll be able to use my magic to look back to their interactions with the item in the past."
Rhett’s eyes shone with astonishment. "Wait... So, you can look into the past?"
Aceco shook her head, chuckling lightly. "Not necessarily. It’s more like looking through the memories that both of them share, using the item as a medium. So, if the item was present during her murder and Cullen happens to be the murderer..." She trailed off on purpose, arching an eyebrow to see if Rhett was catching up.
"Then you’ll be able to see the scene and we’ll get full proof evidence that Cullen is the vampire." Rhett couldn’t help grinning.
Finally! They were one step closer to fishing the bastard out.
