Chapter 242: The Mate Bond Is The Key
They were back on track in finding out if Cullen was the vampire they suspected, but Rhett only had a little problem with that.
"How will I be able to tell if an item has been touched by both Cullen and Lupe?" He asked before adding. "There’s currently an investigation ongoing in the house and I could tell my soldiers to be on the lookout for it."
Aceco blinked curiously at first but then shrugged. "I guess that means Isleen would have to be part of the investigation. She’s close to both of them so she should know."
And, therein lies the problem. Ugh!
"Isleen wouldn’t be able to handle it. She was devastated when I saw her at the scene." He brushed his hair with a low growl.
The poor girl had gone through enough. Any more trauma and he was afraid she’d have a full-on mental breakdown.
"Oh, come on Gamma Rhett." Aceco waved her hand dismissively. "You underestimate the girl. Just make her part of the investigation and then be there to guide her. She’ll be fine, don’t worry."
Rhett’s mouth parted but he was still hesitant. He’d seen how distressed Isleen had been back at his place.
She had even run off until she almost collapsed from exhaustion. She was his mate and it was his duty to protect her.
But if Aceco had this much faith in her, then maybe he should do the same.
But speaking of which...
"I’ll think about it, but now I have something to share with you, Aceco." He lowered his voice, his eyes darting around cautiously before he continued. "It’s about Isleen. She confided in me and told me about a ’special ability’. She can sense people of other races within a specific range. I believe it’s a blessing from the moon goddess but she hasn’t been able to hone this ability yet."
Aceco blinked in surprise as she whispered. "This... This is extraordinary! If she’s able to hone her ability, it could help us greatly in the battle."
Exactly! Rhett was glad that Aceco shared his same line of thought.
He went ahead to reveal that he was the ’chosen one’, hopeful that she’d have a way to help him.
"So you can communicate freely to the moon goddess in your dreams." She repeated his words thoughtfully. "This is yet another breakthrough! The moon goddess shares a connection with all wolves and can thus communicate with any of you if she chooses. But the fact that you can initiate a conversation with her... I’ve never seen anything like it."
Tell him something he didn’t know.
"What do you advise me to do?" Rhett asked. He already had a plan for tonight, but he wanted someone else’s perspective.
"Just go ahead and communicate with the moon goddess tonight." Aceco sat down again, her wings relaxing behind her. "Let’s see what she has to say. I’m sure she has an answer that’ll help Isleen hone her ability better."
Well, it was settled then. It was time he had a little chat with the moon goddess.
.
.
That night, Rhett struggled at first to fall asleep but eventually, before midnight, his consciousness drifted into Dreamland.
He opened his eyes, narrowing them to take in the influx of light shining from the sun. He was on a sandy beach with soothing waves that were like music to his ears. The sounds of flying seagulls above him only added to the serenity of the scenery.
However, he knew very well that all this was just a projection of his mind.
"Oh, holy goddess of the moon. I have come again seeking your guidance." He bowed his head slightly, his body shaking with excitement.
There was silence at first which was then followed by the waves calming down. But then, they stopped altogether, making the sea static like a pond.
It seemed like time had stopped and when Rhett looked up, he noticed that even some seagulls had been suspended in the air, unmoving.
"She’s here..." He muttered to himself after drawing in a deep breath.
Suddenly, an enchanting voice spoke, sounding all around him like bell chimes. "I am always with you, my child."
Just then, the scenery of the beach changed massively. The bright sun on the horizon shifted into a silver moon in its full phase, its light pouring down on him and the sandy beach. The day turned to night and became starry.
The sea waves began moving now but seemed to have become a little more violent. The intensity of the wind increased, rustling his hair and forcing him to cover his face with his arm.
He managed to turn his gaze toward the moon in time to see a spectacular scene.
Shrouded by clouds was the moon goddess, who walked down on the air as if there was a stairway in the clouds. Her long silver hair flowed behind her like a river, and her shimmering white garment blew into the wind.
Her eyes shone with the light of the moon and on her lips appeared a radiant smile as she welcomed Rhett. "Welcome, Rhett Dark water. So, you’re here about your mate, Isleen."
He wasn’t even surprised. He’d learned to never underestimate the limits of the moon goddess’s awareness.
"Yes, holy one. I would like to know if there’s any way she can hone her ability." He responded calmly, but couldn’t hide the hint of anticipation and curiosity in his tone.
The moon goddess chuckled, as she walked closer to Rhett. He remained silent and unmoving, even as she circled him.
He had all his trust in her and knew she could never disappoint him.
"Well, what if I told you that she already knows how to go about that?" She suddenly tilted her head and asked. "You see, one thing about you mortals is that even after we’ve given you a path to achieve your goals, you ignorantly ignore them and do things outside the path set before you."
Path? Why did that sound familiar?
She didn’t leave him in suspense and continued. "I wouldn’t beat around the bush any further. The key to honing her ability is you. The mate bond is the key."
