Chapter 243: Happy Gamma Rhett
"The mate bond is the key." The moon goddess’ words resounded in Rhett’s mind as he blinked to hide the confusion he felt.
How? What could that even mean?
Seeking answers, he bowed slightly. "Uh... Holy one, could you please elaborate?" He prayed silently, hoping that she’d shed more light.
But knowing the moon goddess, that was properly unlikely.
"I’ve told you enough already, my chosen one." Her voice chimed calmly and her hair flew gently behind her as the silver light surrounding her increased slightly in intensity. "I’ve guided you to a path. You don’t expect me to hold your hand and walk you through that path now, do you?"
Touchè.
She was right. But he just found her words so confusing. Could she mean that he and Isleen have to embrace the mate bond completely? Would that mean that they’d have to open up about their relationship to the rest of the pack?
Ugh, he had a lot of thinking to do.
Just then, the moon goddess stepped away from him, her back facing him as she began floating upward.
"One more thing." She suddenly uttered. "The time for you to reveal yourself to the world is drawing nearer, my child. Show the other races that they can trust your leadership in this war. Show them that I made the right choice."
Leadership? But he was just a Gamma of a barely known werewolf pack.
"Holy one, wait!" He called out. "How will I know when the time to reveal myself has arrived?"
She simply smiled as the silver light surrounding her reached a new peak until she shone brighter than the moon above them.
Rhett struggled to look directly at her and ended up diverting his gaze, using his arms to shield his eyes.
"Before the world knows your identity, they must first be made aware of your existence." She replied. "Someone powerful will reveal the prophecy of the chosen one. Reveal your identity after that."
And with that, she disappeared and soon after, Rhett’s eyes darted open in the physical world.
He felt an odd feeling of peace wash over him as he got up from the bed and walked up to the only window in his room built for his stay in the training camp.
From there, he was able to get a good view of the moon, shining brightly in its half phase.
Every time he gazed at the moon, he was reminded of his connection with the moon goddess. She was always with him...
.
.
Two Weeks passed and it was finally time for him to give the enlisted soldiers a break.
They’d exceeded his expectations in the war and the fey proved their worth several times in the battles.
During this period, Rhett was exceedingly busy, attending meetings alongside Aceco and Alpha Beowulf to receive leaders of other packs and fey factions.
In a few of these meetings, he’d had the opportunity to meet the Fairy Queen and Elven King. The two enigmatic figures had superseded all the descriptions Aceco had given him.
While they were both proficient in magic, he’d been able to tell that the fairy Queen had a stronger affinity for it.
He couldn’t help wondering what would happen if these creatures eventually let go of their pact to never take a life and decided to use their magic to go against the werewolves and vampires.
They’d be unstoppable, that’s for sure.
Apart from war politics and preparations, Rhett also fulfilled his duties as Isleen’s mate.
After his house had been cleared from further investigations, he found time to visit her and on a few of those occasions, they were intimate.
Sex with Isleen was all shades of sensual, heated, and passionate.
And today, after driving away from the camp, he decided to make a stop at the precinct to seek advice from an old friend of his.
"Farkas." Rhett burst into the military advisor’s office, a wide grin etched on his face. "How’ve things been these past few days?"
The office was brightly lit and seated on a black chair was Farkas, looking through some files and typing something into a computer.
However, he couldn’t help raising his head to look at Rhett just then, his mouth agape.
"You... You look quite happy today." Farkas arched an eyebrow, his eyes trailing him from his head to his shoes. "What’s the occasion? I know the enlisted soldiers are going for a three-day break, but you’ve never liked breaks, so that can’t be it."
Rhett couldn’t help rolling his eyes. Really?
"Very funny, Farkas." He took a seat at the other side of the desk, but his smile didn’t disappear. "Yes, the enlisted soldiers have been dismissed for a break. And yes, you’re right... That’s not the reason why I’m happy."
Farkas blinked awkwardly at first, but then soon after his face beamed with a grin. "Okay. So, what is it then? Did you get a promotion? Am I speaking with the new Beta?"
Jeez, Farkas was unbelievable! The Alpha and his family were still mourning Beta Darius and even though it had been two weeks since his death, the Beta seat was still vacant.
"So loud but yet so wrong." Rhett sighed and his smile finally disappeared. "I’m happy because I will be seeing my mate this evening. And I’m here to seek your advice on a suitable gift to give her."
There, he said it. He hadn’t told Farkas that he had a mate yet, talk less that she was his son’s ex-girlfriend.
As expected, Farkas blinked with shock. "Mate? You have a mate? S–since when? Why didn’t you–" he threw all those questions without even taking a break to catch his breath.
Rhett couldn’t take it anymore. "By the moon, relax Farkas! I couldn’t tell you or anyone else because of the... Peculiarities surrounding our relationship. But I think we’re getting closer to coming out." He smiled.
Farkas’s brows creased. "Coming out?" He repeated. "This mate is female, right?"
Seriously?
"Yes, of course she is. What is wrong with you today?" Rhett threw his arms into the air.
This conversation was going to be longer than he’d first thought.
