Chapter 270: Promise Of A Swift Death
Just then, Rhett ran up to us, his worried gaze fixed on me.
He glanced at the pile of ash underneath my feet with creased eyebrows before turning his gaze back to me, but this time I saw the confusion in his eyes.
"What happened? Have you guys been able to find the vampire lord’s coordinates?" He asked hesitantly.
I was still left stunned by the vampire lord’s words. I heard him speak to me. He talked inside my head.
I wasn’t hearing things, he’d somehow found a way to get into my head and gave me that threat.
With a gulp, I turned to Rhett. "We have to head to his lair, now. He knows we’re here. He’s waiting for us."
Rhett blinked back in surprise, glancing at Aceco, who remained speechless.
Eventually, he drew in a deep breath and blurted. "If he’s aware of our presence, then I guess there’s no use hiding or being... ’gentle’ with our attacks. Let’s end this..."
Aceco nodded her understanding before closing her eyes. It seemed she was communicating telepathically with someone.
A few seconds later, the fairy Queen materialized in front of us, her diamond-like butterfly wings fluttering behind her.
"Aceco told me you’ve found the vampire lord’s lair." She turned to me with an expectant look.
I nodded in response, watching her sigh with relief soon after.
"Then we must make haste. Quickly, give me your hand." She stretched her hand towards me, beckoning for me to take it.
I did just that, though my heart felt like it was about to fly out of my chest at any moment from the rising anxiety.
Suddenly, a protective force field from the fairy Queen’s magic manifested itself around us, and just on time, too, as vampires swarmed around us. I could feel the fairy Queen inside my mind, but I let her in.
Eventually, she opened her eyes a few seconds later and waved her hand forward. In that instant, the terrain around us shifted as a white light enveloped us. Soon after, I couldn’t hear anything.
No clashing of swords, no snarling of vampires, no sounds of guns reloading or howling of wolves. All I heard was... Silence.
I opened my eyes slowly only to realize that we were no longer in the center of the battle between the allied forces and the vampires. Instead, we were now in what appeared to be a dark cave with a ceiling that stood higher than a duplex.
A cold shiver went down my spine, causing my legs to involuntarily shake as I turned my gaze to a rock formation in front of us.
The rock formation was tall, stretching several feet above us. It was in the shape of a throne, but surprisingly, there was no one sitting at the top.
This was the vampire lord’s lair...
Just then, Rhett took a defensive stance in front of me as Aceco and the fairy Queen prepared some spells.
"Focus, Isleen," Rhett muttered softly as he kept looking around us.
But focus on what? I couldn’t feel anything. No vampires, no fey... Nothing. It seemed like Rhett and the two powerful fairies were the only beings within a hundred-meter radius.
Suddenly, however, my special ability went into overdrive, causing my heart to lurch into my stomach.
I quickly turned my neck to look behind me and yelled. "Watch out!"
But it was too late. A black spear flew towards us from behind. Before anyone knew what was happening, it had stabbed Aceco right in the stomach.
The black spear stuck through her like a kebab, staining her white garment with crimson blood as she stood there motionless with her mouth agape.
"Aceco!" I screamed in shock and was about to run to her when Rhett grabbed me before dragging me out of the way.
Almost a second later, several more black spears landed on the spot where I’d been standing.
Meanwhile, the fairy Queen went into action, surrounding herself with a forcefield. When the onslaught of black spears didn’t seem to be coming to an end, she pointed her finger at Rhett and me, causing a protective force bubble to envelop us.
"Show yourself, Vlad!" The fairy Queen spoke in a domineering voice that brimmed with magical power as she glanced around herself cautiously.
At that moment, my gaze landed on Aceco, who lay there outside the force field, gasping for breath with the spear still stuck to her stomach.
No... We had to help her.
I quickly turned to Rhett and held his arm, bringing his attention to me.
"W– We can’t let Aceco die," I muttered softly, locking my eyes with his.
His gaze softened as he turned his head to what was outside the force field. He opened his mouth to say something but didn’t get the chance as a bone-chilling laughter echoed around the cave.
"Well, well, well. I’ve waited centuries for this." The voice spoke with a hint of amusement. The way it echoed repeatedly made it feel like it was coming from all corners of the cave simultaneously.
I couldn’t feel him before but now I could. A powerful and ancient dark presence was lurking in the shadows around us.
"The vampire Lord," I muttered, unable to hide the bitterness in my tone as I gritted my teeth.
Realization dawned on Rhett’s face before he glanced at the Fairy Queen. The latter waved her hand toward Aceco, causing a force field to surround her as well.
She didn’t look like she had much time left. Someone had to go check on her.
Meanwhile, the vampire lord kept on speaking. "As soon as whispers of a ’chosen one’ from the werewolves began emerging centuries ago, I waited. I waited patiently until finally, I felt your birth. Who would’ve thought, the only being capable of killing me... Would turn out to be a pathetic mutt."
I knew this tactic all too well. It was the same one Fergus used with me before I led him to his death. Vlad was trying to get into Rhett’s head, play with his emotions, and find a weak spot that would make him snap.
Suddenly, my thoughts were cut short when a figure walked out of the shadows in front of us. It was a man wearing a black suit, with a black cape draped over his shoulders. He looked devilishly attractive, with long black hair and fiery red eyes that shone in the darkness like embers.
For some odd reason, I felt like he wasn’t looking directly at Rhett. He was looking at me.
After fleeting his gaze from Rhett and me to the fairy Queen flying above us, he sniggered.
"Anyway, thank you for offering yourself to me. I’ll reward you with a swift death." His deep voice resounded around the cave as he stretched out his hand, revealing a black spear with a blade that seemed like it could cut through stone.
Without further ado, the vampire Lord took one step. Shockingly, he appeared only inches away from the force field at that same moment and proceeded to raise his spear.
Moon goddess, have mercy...
