Chapter 271: In The Name Of Love

Luckily, just before the spear could hit the forcefield, an invisible force held the vampire Lord, stopping him from moving.

He grunted and managed to turn his head to the source of his predicament. I looked as well just in time to see the fairy Queen flying gracefully behind him.

Her eyes glowed as she struggled to use her magic to hold the vampire Lord in place.

’Get her somewhere safer.’ Suddenly, her voice rang telepathically in my head.

I glanced at Aceco’s limp body across the throne room and felt my resolve heighten.

However, I gave Rhett one final glance before smiling at him. This was his fight, I needed to step away.

Without wasting any more time, I jumped out of the forcefield and ran toward Aceco’s body. At that same moment, it seemed the fairy Queen’s spell on the vampire lord had weakened, as he roared with rage.

"Insect!" He snarled, but I didn’t dare look back and just kept running.

Eventually, I got to Aceco and stepped into the forcefield surrounding her. My gaze went to her face but I couldn’t help but gasp when I saw how pale her face was.

She opened her eyes just then before turning her head to me. "I–Isleen. It’s... It’s too late for me... Just save yourself, it’s... It’s too dangerous." She stuttered, her voice trembling.

I shook my head with desperation before mumbling. "No... No, Aceco. You can’t die, I’ll... I’ll get the spear out."

My hands trembled erratically as I placed them on the spear still stuck to her stomach. However, she grabbed my wrist before I could pull it out.

"I– I’m losing too much blood." She muttered softly, before glancing down at her belly.

Indeed, her white garment was already soiled with the crimson-red tint of her own blood.

It was ironic how the fairy healer couldn’t heal herself when she desperately needed it.

Suddenly, I heard a loud boom sound followed by crashing of rocks and dust. I looked back over my shoulder and was shocked at what I saw.

Rhett... Rhett transformed to his wolf form. This was the first time I’d ever seen his transformation. His wolf was majestic, with silver fur, and stood almost as high as his human form, even on all fours.

With a howl, Rhett leaped into the air and charged towards the spot where he’d thrown the vampire Lord into. However, a spear shot out from the dust, forcing him to roll away before it hit his face.

I watched with terror as the vampire Lord flew out of the dust. His cape blew into the air as he looked down at Rhett.

The vampire lord sniggered before speaking. "Impressive... But not enough, sadly."

Just as Rhett was about to jump up, the vampire lord clenched his fist, freezing him in place. Crap... He had telekinesis and could fly!

With a cold smirk, the vampire lord waved his hand, using the invisible force of his telekinesis to send Rhett flying away from where he stood. The silver wolf crashed directly on top of Vlad’s throne before falling to the ground with a yelp.

I closed my eyes and turned my gaze back to Aceco. She was slowly losing consciousness and struggled to keep her eyes open still.

"I don’t think I can do this without you, Aceco." I croaked and soon after, I broke down in sobs.

My eyes stung as I tried desperately to control my breathing. I’d lost everything. My parents, my friends... And now it seemed I was about to lose yet another friend.

During the preparations for the war, Aceco had always been at my side, helping me hone my ability. We bonded and I began seeing her less like a mighty holy figure and more like a friend. A sister even.

Just then, to my surprise, Aceco placed her palm on my face. I froze as I slowly opened my eyes to meet her warm gaze on me.

"You’ve lost so much, Isleen. But someone as gifted as you should know that this life is not the end. We will always be with you, even if you don’t believe it." She muttered softly with a reassuring smile.

We? What did she mean by...?

"Isleen!" The fairy Queen’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

I turned my head just in time to see the Vampire Lord levitating right in front of the forcefield. He grinned maliciously as he raised his spear.

Everything happened so fast. The spear crashed on the forcefield which broke almost instantly upon contact.

I was cornered and even if I tried moving away, I wouldn’t be fast enough. Perhaps... This was the end. Perhaps now I could find peace.

I closed my eyes, ready to accept my fate as I knelt between Aceco and the vampire lord’s spear. I didn’t care if she was already dying, I wouldn’t let her go through more pain.

Suddenly, I heard a whimper followed by me being shoved away by a furry paw. Furry paw?

I opened my eyes when I landed butt-first on the ground, but soon after, I wished I hadn’t done that. Heck, I wished I didn’t have eyes to see the horrifying scene before me.

"Rhett!" I screamed as more tears streamed down my eyes.

In his wolf form, Rhett had shoved me away in time but hadn’t been quick enough to save himself. He was stabbed through the chest by Vlad’s spear and stood there weakly.

Meanwhile, the vampire lord chuckled like a madman. "Idiot! Yet another idiot who comes before me while putting so much care on someone. You will fall like others before you and it’ll all be for the same reason. Love. Pathetic, love–"

The vampire lord was cut short when Rhett suddenly shifted back to his human form. The spear was still sticking through his chest but he ignored the pain and gritted his teeth.

He grabbed the spear with both hands and pulled it out of his chest, causing even the vampire lord to shake his head in shock.

"I– Impossible." Vlad blurted with widened eyes as he struggled to pull the spear out of Rhett’s grasp. But it was no use.

I suddenly remembered the Moon goddess’ words to Rhett. The mate bond was the key...

I blinked back tears as Rhett clenched his jaw before pushing the blade of the spear to face Vlad’s chest.

My wolf howled despondently inside me as Rhett coughed out blood before speaking weakly. "Love... Isn’t a weakness. It’s... It’s my strength."

Without another word, he managed to push the blade of the spear through Vlad’s chest. The vampire lord gasped, his eyes looking down at the spear in shock.

It didn’t take long for him to slowly degrade into ash, causing the spear to fall to the ground with a clang.

However, at that same moment, Rhett fell limply to the ground as well.

"Rhett!" I yelled as I stood up and rushed to his side.

At that same moment, the fairy Queen, who’d been stuck under a pile of rocks and had her garment stained with blood and dust, got up and flew to Aceco.

But it was too late... The fairy healer was dead.

Meanwhile, I shook Rhett’s body and desperately tried to get him to wake up. But then my whole world came crashing down when I could no longer hear his heartbeat.

It seemed at that moment, my heart ceased beating with his.

"No... No!" I screamed as I hugged his body close to my chest. The vampire lord was finally killed, but at what cost?

Rhett had sacrificed himself all in the name of love...
