Chapter 62: _ Hm, Liam
"Do you need something, Ms. Isleen?"
That small voice of Liam called behind them. Isleen sure did look startled. She looked like she’d just seen a ghost. It seemed that with every little form of intimacy they made, they’d get caught.
He wasn’t scared though. The more, the merrier. The more people who knew about them, the more the chances of having to hide had to end.
The more the chances of Kylo finding out.
He wouldn’t want for Kylo to find out from a third party. He wanted to tell his son right at this moment. Hell, he’d been aching to tell him but for Isleen, he’d hold on.
"Oh!" Liam beamed. "Gamma Rhett is also here. Hello sir." The boy courtsized Rhett.
Rhett didn’t answer but he felt Isleen flinch. "Liam... w– what are you standing there for?" She asked.
"I thought I heard my name." Said the boy casually with a smile.
Rhett internally groaned. It wasn’t right to suspect everything Isleen’s son did but that smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. It hinted at something else. Like the boy knew damn well what he was doing.
That should mean something, right?
Isleen, clueless patted her own forehead. "Oh, right. I called you."
No, she didn’t; Rhett grimaced internally. What was wrong with her? They mentioned Liam’s name at the beginning of their discussion but not enough for him to hear.
From his claims right now, he had just gotten there, so, there was no way he heard his name because Isleen didn’t call him.
Unless he had been just right by the doorway, listening to their conversation, and saw everything they had just done, Liam was lying.
Add that to the cart. A liar. When he had enough on the cart, he’d ship his hunch and...know.
Isleen brushed her hair backward. "Come on here, Liam." She gestured for him. "Gamma Rhett wants to speak to you."
Rhett watched delight lit up in Liam’s eyes. He had no idea if this delight was false or original.
"I’d be happy to talk to you too, Gamma Rhett. I like Kylo a lot, so I have to like his Dad too." He turned to Isleen. "You like him too, Megami, don’t you?"
Isleen shifted uncomfortably, the color draining from her face. He couldn’t resist the jab, watching Isleen flinch at the mention of Kylo’s name and her liking him.
"...I mean, because you like Kylo, Megami, you must like his Dad too." Finished Liam.
Why did he see the need to explain himself?
The more Rhett tried to take this boy off his suspect list, the more he gave him reasons not to. And it was all because of his age. It was because he didn’t see how a twelve-year-old could commit those crimes or be entangled with them.
But then again, a twelve-year-old wouldn’t pretend to be asleep and watch his adopted mother’s nakedness.
Yet, this boy did it.
Right now, Liam has moved from being a 10% suspect to 15% on Rhett’s list. Once it got to 50%, he’d know for sure how much potential the boy had gotten.
Clearing his throat, Rhett focused back on Liam. "Do you know who a man named Reed is?"
He hit the nail on the head.
Liam shook his head, his eyes wide and innocent. "Nope. Never met anyone called Reed."
Hm. 16%
Rhett pressed on, ignoring the gnawing feeling in his gut. "Did you, by any chance, encounter a fairy on the night your brother died?"
Liam blinked, uncertainty crossing his face before he replied, "Yeah, I saw one."
Saw or was WITH one?
17%
"And you didn’t know its name?"
Liam shrugged. "Nope. We didn’t talk much. I mean, not to the point of sharing names, sir."
"Then why were you with this fairy?" Rhett’s voice sharpened, his gaze locking onto Liam’s.
Before Liam could answer, Isleen burst in. Her voice was laced with disbelief. "Liam, what are you talking about? You were out on the night your brother died? You met a fairy? Why didn’t you ever tell me?"
Isleen’s outburst startled Liam, and for a fleeting moment, a flicker of something akin to fear struck out his face before it was replaced by a pout.
"The fairy was just going to take me to my brother but he couldn’t anyway."
Rhett countered. "Why?"
Liam shook his head disapprovingly.
"Why?" Rhett asked again, sterner this time.
And as though his tone was a blade that punctured him, Liam began to cry.
Oh, please. Rhett could roll his eyes right now if he knew had to.
Isleen drew the boy closer, such that he was leaning on the boobs. She seemed to be doing it out of platonic affection but with the way Liam sucked his lip in and rested even deeper on her chest, Rhett wanted to break down the whole house.
Was he being paranoid?
Jealous?
Or there was something wrong about this boy. Something he couldn’t quite place.
Rhett had to tear his gaze away from the view. He couldn’t, not even if he tried watch something other than his head or hands on Isleen’s breasts.
"Tell Gamma Rhett, okay?" Isleen patted Liam’s head. "He’s just trying to help."
Slowly, he drew away from Isleen and turned to Rhett again. "We didn’t get to see my brother because we came across another fairy woman. She seems to be his accomplice and they talked about bringing something to the woods and meeting there. While I was being taken to the woods by the male fairy who told me that he was there to get me to my brother, I escaped because I could feel that something wasn’t right."
Damn. This one was one smart little boy.
18%
This aligned with Cora’s story in some ways, and in some ways, clashes.
"What is that something that wasn’t right?" Rhett asked.
Isleen caressed the boy’s head even more. Tch.
"A sound. Like that of a little boy. Sounded like he was trying to cry for help but was unable to and could only make out that whimper. But I heard it." He turned to Isleen. "Remember I told you my inner wolf is getting awakened, Megami?"
Isleen, with glossy eyes, nodded. "I do, baby." She kissed the boy’s forehead.
Rhett swallowed. He kind of envied Liam’s position right now.
