Chapter 63: _ It’s Mum
Isleen

Nothing could change the fact that she did not like that look on Gamma Rhett’s face as he questioned Liam. The boy was just a kid, for Pete’s sake!
Yeah, he made a mistake not disclosing his encounter with the fairy but he was probably too scared to talk about it. Not after losing his older brother and only family like that.
She made sure to offer Liam a comforting hand as he relayed his experience.
"It was afar but I heard it. Faintly and it disappeared just as it came but not enough for me to not catch, all thanks to my awakening inner wolf." Liam looked down and my heart reached out to him.
The poor boy.
I squeezed his hands gently. "Take it one step at a time."
He turned to me with a smile before continuing. "I asked the fairy if he heard it too. That’s when he said he’d go check it out and told me to wait. But I... I couldn’t wait. Something just wasn’t right about him. My brother couldn’t be in the woods, so he had no business taking me there."
Oh, poor Liam; I thought. My poor boy, my poor son...
Even still, that untrusting glint remained in Gamma Rhett’s eyes.
What was his problem? Liam was already trying enough as it was. This could give him trauma for heaven’s sake!
"What about the other fairy woman? Did you ever see her again?"
Liam shook his head, his large eyes filled with confusion. "No, sir. Only when we first met on the road."
"And why didn’t you tell us about this earlier, Liam?" Gamma Rhett’s voice grew stern. "Especially after the news broke about the wolf pup’s bones found in the woods."
Didn’t Liam say he was scared? I opened my mouth to interject but Gamma Rhett held out a palm midway to stop me.
W- what the?
How did he know I was about to speak? He wasn’t even looking at me. Yet, there was something about how firm his palm was that made me want to place mine in it. As though if I did, I’d be protected for every day of my life.
Liam’s brow furrowed, the innocence in his gaze undeniable. "I... I didn’t figure, sir."
No. No. No. My boy was utterly scared now. I should talk.
I couldn’t help myself. "He’s just a child, Gamma Rhett," I interjected, my voice carrying a protectiveness I couldn’t hide. "He’s been through enough pain."
I and Gamma Rhett’s eyes met, and a spark– a familiar heat ignited in my chest. It was a feeling I’d tried so hard to suppress, yet it flared up every time Gamma Rhett was near.
This man should leave soon though. Kylo might decide to branch on his way back from work. Not after the news about Mr. Fenrir’s death must have spread through the pack.
I never knew Gamma Rhett could be this obedient. Or considerate. He did want to leave.
Clearing his throat, he stood up. "Isleen, we’ll discuss about– us later. Tonight." He said to me.
Geez!
How could he say that in front of Liam?!
He turned to Liam with his voice softening slightly.
Thank God.
"If you happen to remember anything else, please don’t hesitate to tell us."
I liked this tone better.
As Gamma Rhett turned to leave, Liam blurted out one last thing. "If something bad happened that night, it was all the fairy’s fault. He scared me, sir. There was just something... something bad about him."
I saw Gamma Rhett pause and a whiff of doubt crossed his face. "The fey entities don’t kill, young man," he said finally, his tone gentle.
Yes, I’d have to agree with him on that table. I had no idea why Liam hated the fey so much. It was probably because he first heard about his brother’s death from one.
But Liam wasn’t convinced. "Maybe things have changed," he insisted. "This one lied to me that he was leading me to my brother, but took me to the woods where I heard cries and stuff. He also had blood on him. He wasn’t wearing the white dress code either, but black. It was suspicious. It IS suspicious, sir."
Sometimes, I could swear that Liam was smarter than his age. And other times, he’d be just as annoying as a teenager. Having no one else in the world could make a child grow faster than their age.
It made me.
Gamma Rhett hesitated, then nodded curtly. "Thank you, Liam. We’ll take your information into account." With that, he left us alone once more.
With that, he turned to leave.
A pang of longing filled my chest as I watched him walk away. My inner wolf– that untamed part of me, yearned to chase after him, to feel the warmth of his touch once more.
But I held myself back, knowing it wouldn’t be right. It would never be right no matter how right it made me feel. Could Kylo just get back here?
I needed that reassurance. I needed that reminder that I was his and his alone. Not his father’s.
Right now, all I could do was comfort the little boy beside me. His vulnerability would forever remind me of my younger self. And that was why I’d do anything to protect him.
Liam– my son.
"If you still have your appetite intact after all of that confession, Liam." I urged him. "Let’s eat. And then, we’d talk about you keeping that incident all to yourself later."
He needed to know that I wouldn’t tolerate secrets.
Liam smiled and nodded vigorously. "Yes, Ms. Isleen. But if you must know, I’m always hungry. Very hungry. Just that– I prefer to drink things instead."
"Drink things?" I raised a brow. "You mean like tea?"
Liam laughed. "Hm. I drink them like tea, so maybe."
"Just come over here, young man. I’ll go set the table for Cullen and Kylo’s meal. They’ll arrive anytime soon."
"Okey dokey, Ms. Isleen."
"Liam?"
"Hm?"
"It’s Mum. It’s not Ms. Isleen. It’s Mum now."
