Chapter 82: _ Unworthy Of Her Presence
And so, the meeting with Aceco was set for the next morning to avoid having vampires trialing them if there were any in the pack.
"How about their spies?" Asked the Delta thoughtfully. "Just because the sun holds the vamps at bay doesn’t mean their eyes and ears within the pack take a nap too."
The sobering truth settled over the room. It was still baffling to Rhett that anyone on their side could be working with the vampires.
"We need to be discreet," Alpha spoke. "As long as we keep this meeting with Aceco under wraps and only discuss it amongst ourselves, we should be safe. If anyone outside this room gets wind of it, then it means one of us is a traitor."
This was one of the few times when Rhett thought the Alpha indeed proved his scholarly status. If they indeed kept the meeting discreet, they should be fine.
Except, Rhett wasn’t convinced. "But wouldn’t it be suspicious if all five of us suddenly disappeared together?" he pointed out, his voice a whisper that was meant for the ears of just the five of them council leaders. "Someone’s bound to notice the sudden absence of the Alpha and his entire council. And that might just happen to be the beacon that would alert our said enemies."
The other four seemed to be thoughtful, processing Rhett’s point until the Delta spoke.
With eyes that held the keenness of a hawk, Bain nodded in agreement. " Gamma Rhett makes a valid point, Alpha. We might end up drawing unnecessary attention."
"So that means just about two or three of us have to go." Farkas sighed. "But would security be enough? Just three of us? We have to be prepared for the worst."
Rhett shook his head. "Three out of the five of us here plus Aceco would be unstoppable. I do not think we have that many numbers of Vampires in the pack currently if there are any at all."
"So, Alpha Beowulf, the decision-making is back in your heads in your hands. Who amongst us is going with you?" Bain asked the Alpha.
Just as the Alpha was about to speak, Darius interjected. "There’s no need for a debate. None of you are fit enough to see Aceco, except for myself and the Alpha."
What the heck–?
His words were a slap in the face, an insult not just to Rhett, but to the Delta and Farkas. How could he just effortlessly downplay them just like that?
Why didn’t this Beta know when to be reasonable and dump his sassiness? Rhett internally seethed. Matter of fact, he was tired of holding back for him.
Hell, everything going on was bubbling up and pushing him on the edge. He was sure they were all on the edge, and yet, an idiot like Darius got to throw shit in their faces.
Hell nah.
"Hold on a second, Darius. If anyone’s unfit to see Aceco, it’s you with your reckless temper and your loose mouth that could flare up any minute and jeopardize the entire mission. Why don’t you stay back and save us unnecessary trouble, huh?" Rhett barked, sincerely wishing to deliver a heavy punch in Darius’s face.
Again, Farkas tried to hold him back but Rhett shot his friend an icy look, urging him to let the situation be allow him to put Darius in his place.
Darius’s eyes narrowed dangerously and a vein bulged in his neck. "Are you forgetting your place, Rhett? You’re just a Gamma. You stand no chance against me. I’m your superior." He took a step forward, his imposing figure looming over Rhett.
Did Darius just say he stood no chance against him? Rhett almost broke down in a fit of laughter. Rhett, though younger was on obviously the better fighter. Rhett knew had they had an idea what he truly was, even Beowulf would stand down and make him the Alpha.
He’d always allowed his reserved personality to take over and he would always overlook Darius’s nonsense but right now, he wouldn’t back down. "Titles have nothing to do with this," he countered, his jaw set defiantly. "Why don’t we drop them and settle this right here, right now?"
The tension then became palpable afterward, with Darius taking one step at a time toward Rhett, ignoring the Alpha’s presence. Rhet would have done the same had it not been obligated to respect the Alpha’s presence.
He would wait for Darius to make the first move and then, they’d finish what they started at the Alpha’s house the other day.
"Enough!" Alpha Beowulf’s voice suddenly boomed, halting Darius. "We have more pressing matters at hand than petty squabbles. Your bickering will only draw the attention of the other soldiers to concentrate on our discussion instead of clearing the cells, and then what? Will you reveal our plan to them as well?"
Rhett bit his bottom lip and forced his anger to remain at bay. Once again, Beowulf had made some sense.
He cleared his throat and withdrew his dangerous gaze off Darius. "Apologies, Alpha." He murmured.
Darius, however, remained unfazed. He simply snorted which was a show of disrespect that went largely unnoticed by Alpha Beowulf. Rhett had always thought the Alpha was usually biased when it came to judgments with Darius because he was his father-in-law.
He was right.
"Alright," the Alpha sighed, rubbing his palms. "Darius, Rhett, and I will leave for Aceco’s territory in the afternoon, by the stroke of twelve."
Darius’ response was instantaneous. "Rhett is not going." He stated with a tone that brooked no argument.
It held a finality that stunned the others. It, however, wasn’t new to Rhett as he had seen Darius call shots for Beowulf before.
He couldn’t help but always wonder though. The way Darius always seemed to have a commanding presence around the Alpha. It was almost like he was a shadow leader pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Rhett hoped it wasn’t true. Alpha Beowulf should do better.
