Chapter 83: _ Next Step~ Mate With Her
"Darius," Alpha Beowulf began, his voice resounding a hint of pleading, "it would be more beneficial to have Rhett with us. His keen senses and sharp mind might come in handy."
What in the seven holy hells was that?
Did the Alpha really need to sound like he was going to have Rhett stay back if Darius said no? There was more to this relationship between Darius and Beowulf that exceeded being just in-laws.
Later, when some of their problems were solved, he would look into this; Rhett affirmed internally to himself.
Darius was silent for a moment, his gaze fixed on Rhett like a predator assessing its prey, sizing him up from top to bottom. Rhett really hoped he’d do something stupid and he’d finally have his punch delivered but he was disappointed.
"Very well." Darius grudgingly agreed.
Rhett saw how Farkas and Bain exchanged surprised glances but none dared say anything.
Alpha Beowulf, who looked relieved by Darius’s concession turned to Rhett. "Rhett, you’ll be accompanying us tomorrow."
Rhett could only manage a silent nod. He felt like the pack would be better off without this Alpha and his Beta.
"Well then," Beowulf said, "I believe this meeting has run its course. Until tomorrow." He patted Rhett, Farkas, and Bain like they weren’t old enough to father him.
The three men saluted him regardless as he strode out of the chamber, Farkas trailing silently behind him.
Farkas broke the silence that reigned between them after those two were out with a low whistle. "Did I just witness a power struggle between the Alpha and the Beta?" he asked rhetorically.
Bain stared at the closed door. "It certainly seemed that way," he murmured. "Darius... he acts as though the Alpha’s power diminishes around him."
"I’ll be leaving too," Rhett murmured and walked out too.
He went straight to his office and awaited Farkas’s return. Farkas would still be coordinating the clearing of the corpses in the dungeon and all.
His mind began to play the possibilities of every piece of data he’d gathered so far. One thing he was greatly sure of was that he needed to interrogate Cora once more. This time, he’d make sure she spilled every little detail she was still holding back.
Yet again, his wolf was whining with longing for Isleen. He was to meet her tonight and he swore, he’d decided to mark her unfailingly. Enough of goofing around. He was a man of principles.
He hated all these sneaky hidden passions between them. They needed to stop getting in each other’s way and face the main problem as soon as they could.
The main problem that they would have would be Kylo. Rhett felt bad that he’d be doing that to his son but if it meant saving his life, then he’d do it again.
Suddenly, a knock on his door startled him from his thoughts. "Come in," he called out.
The door creaked open, revealing Farkas with a weary expression. "Finished with the cleanup?" Rhett inquired, gesturing for Farkas to take a seat.
Farkas nodded and collapsed into the chair with a sigh. "Yeah, all taken care of. Though, the mood among the soldiers is— tense. They’re worried, Rhett. Unsure of what’s happening."
Rhett understood. The attacks, the sudden deaths of the vampires, the lack of answers, and now this strange power struggle within their leadership – it was enough to unsettle anyone. "We’ll find the answers, Farkas," he said with a conviction he didn’t entirely feel. "We have to. For the pack."
Farkas offered a weak smile. "That’s the spirit. But let’s talk about our issues. I’d like to hear the entire gist about that boy now."
"Liam?" Rhett raised a brow.
"Yes, Liam."
"Ah, Liam..." Rhett began, summarizing the information he gleaned from the boy. "Everything points towards the fey being untrustworthy, especially the fairies. Well— Liam claims he was lured into the woods by Reed under the pretense of meeting his brother, which was a lie. He also swears he heard another child crying in the woods that night before escaping."
Farkas groaned, rubbing his temples in frustration. "So the fairies can kill now? Did they start this war and are now working against us?"
"Hold on, Farkas," Rhett interjected, disliking the generalization. "We can’t paint all fairies with the same brush. Someone’s manipulating them, that’s for sure. We just need to figure out how the vampires are doing it."
Farkas sighed in agreement. "So why kill Reed then, if they were working together?"
Rhett shrugged. "Beats me. Vampires can be unpredictable creatures, doing things without rhyme or reason sometimes."
He stole a glance at the clock, yearning to leave and meet Isleen. "Let’s revisit this conversation later, Farkas. Right now, I need to focus on tomorrow’s meeting with Aceco. We need a plan, not just for the meeting, but for what comes after. There’s something bigger going on here, and I don’t trust Darius or Beowulf to handle it."
Farkas’s eyes gleamed with approval. "Agreed. We’ll formulate a plan together. In the meantime, get some rest, Rhett. Are you going home?"
Tch.
"Home?" Rhett smirked. "I have an errand to run. I’ll be back."
.
And thus, he left for Isleen’s place. Kylo made it easier for him by dumping Isleen in such an emotional state. When she hugged him with tears in her eyes, he knew right there and then that he’d give his all to never see her in tears again.
He particularly lured her to his car as he knew he couldn’t mark her out in the open. It was sad that he had to do it in such a compressed space but it was better than doing it outside.
When they kissed, he could feel her desire for him in her touch and response. Hell, it took every ounce of control in him to resist giving her what she wanted.
But then, he gave her what she needed. What they both needed.
He marked her and it felt so good. He had almost forgotten the unbound pleasure that came with marking one’s mate. Now, he couldn’t wait to mate with her.
That too, he’d made sure happened sooner than later. Isleen would be his totally very soon. She’d admit her feelings for him and submit to him as she should.
Then, they’d both deal with his son. Hopefully, Kylo will take it well. If he wanted what was best for his father and girlfriend, Kylo should understand, Rhett thought.
[Author’s Question~ Do you think Kylo will take it well?]
