Chapter 273: Chapter 273 Massive spider
Leader Marc sat cross-legged on one of the mats. The group had settled into a circle, each person finding their place on the mats spread across the cave floor.
"We’ll be staying put for now," Marc began, his tone firm yet calm. "Before we head out, we need to finalize our plans. Here’s how it’s going to work."
He pointed to the first group. "Kai, Theo, and Rowan—you’ll be in charge of finding a fresh water source. It’s crucial we locate water to sustain us. For now, make sure your gear is ready and get any necessary supplies in order."
Kai stretched, ready for action. "Understood. We’ll keep our eyes peeled."
Marc then turned to the second group. "Ash, Rylan, and Jax—you’re responsible for scouting out additional shelter options. If this cave becomes compromised, we need backup locations. Start preparing and be ready for when we move out."
Ash nodded. "We’ll have backup plans in place."
"The third group—Leo, Soren, and Brin—will focus on food gathering once we head out. In the meantime, make sure your tools are in good shape."
Leo smiled. "We’ll be ready for any hunting or foraging we need to do."
Marc looked at Aiden, Zane, and Finn. "You three will set traps around the perimeter when we’re out. For now, prepare your traps and get everything ready for setting up."
Aiden adjusted his position. "Got it. We’ll be prepared for trapping."
Finally, Marc addressed the last group. "Oliver, Kyra, Damon, and Lucas—you’ll be patrolling with me. We need to map the area and stay vigilant for any threats. Get your gear ready and conserve your energy."
Kyra glanced at Lucas and Damon, both of whom were sitting close by. Lucas was tense, clearly feeling the strain, while Damon’s eyes were focused but calm. Oliver, with his usual grin, seemed eager to get started.
Marc looked at the group with a final, reassuring nod. "Rest and prepare. We’ll need to be at our best when we move out."
After resting for a while, everyone got ready to head out, ensuring the cave was properly covered and concealed. Kyra took out the large yellowish paper she had, which she divided into four parts using her pencil. She began drawing a rough map of the cave and the surrounding area, including a plant they had seen. Her drawings were a bit crooked but functional.
Damon noticed her struggle and offered to help. His drawing skills were impressive, and he quickly sketched a more accurate and detailed map of the area, capturing the terrain and features with precision. Kyra glanced up at him, grateful, and handed over her rough sketch for him to refine.
Kyraz Damon and Lucas set out with Leader Marc and Oliver, exploring the area thoroughly. They came across a dirt road that seemed to be used regularly, which was a promising sign.
Kyra watched as Damon worked on improving the map, and Lucas, ever observant, found some honey berries. These sweet nectar fruits had a thick brown exterior but revealed a yellowish, juicy inside. He held them up to show the others.
"This is a find," Lucas said with a hint of satisfaction. "These will be great for our meals. They’re sweet and nutritious."
Kyra and Damon both nodded in agreement, appreciating Lucas’s discovery.
Leader Marc’s eyes sparkled with approval as he looked at Lucas. "You’re amazing! Finding those honey berries is a real win for us. We might actually get through this tough spot thanks to your find." His laughter was hearty, and for a moment, the mood lightened.
Lucas grinned, feeling a warm sense of accomplishment. "Just doing my part," he said, glancing at Kyra and Damon, who were still working on the map. Oliver, who had been watching their surroundings, gave a nod of appreciation.
Oliver put those fruits in his bag.
As the group continued their exploration, Kyra admired Damon’s map, which was detailed and precise. The area was a mix of dense forest and open clearings, with dirt paths suggesting regular animal activity. As they walked, Kyra couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. She glanced at Damon, who seemed just as alert, and then at Lucas, who was scanning the area.
"Everyone, stay alert," Leader Marc instructed. "We’ve made good progress, but we need to be careful. This place has some dangerous creatures, especially as night falls."
The group nodded in agreement and continued their patrol. Kyra and Damon led the way, with Lucas and Oliver close behind. The forest seemed to close in around them, and the temperature dropped as dusk approached. The familiar forest sounds grew eerily quiet.
Suddenly, Oliver froze. He held up a hand to signal the others to stop. His keen eyes had spotted something unusual. "Hold up," he whispered, barely audible. "I see something."
Kyra and Damon moved up beside him. There, partially hidden among the leaves, was a massive spider with long, spindly legs and a dark, intimidating size. Its eyes glowed a dangerous red.
The spider’s eyes locked onto them with a predatory gaze, and its mandibles clicked dangerously.
"Everyone, back up slowly," Leader Marc ordered. "We don’t want to provoke it."
As the group began to retreat, the spider’s legs moved with surprising speed, and it advanced toward them. Its venomous spray sizzled as it hit the ground.
"Damn!!" Oliver shouted as the spider lunged, its venomous spray hissing dangerously close. The group quickly backed away, but Lucas acted swiftly. With a determined growl, he shifted into his wolf form. His powerful claws raked through the spider’s body, and with a final, guttural shriek, the spider collapsed, dead.
Leader Marc, who had been watching the scene unfold, turned to Lucas with admiration in his eyes. "You’re a talented wolf! You have a great future ahead of you," he said, his voice filled with genuine respect.
Lucas, still in his wolf form, gave a satisfied nod. As he shifted back into human form, a smile of pride spread across his face. He felt a deep sense of accomplishment and happiness. His gaze met Kyra’s, who was watching him with a warm, approving smile.
Kyra stepped closer, her eyes bright with admiration. "That was incredible, Luca. You really saved us there."
