Chapter 316: Chapter 258 - One Man Guards the Pass, Authorized (Subscribe please!)_1
Three dogs barked in quick succession, and the atmosphere instantly became tense.
Everyone immediately knew something was up, hurriedly stopping their pit-digging and stove-making. They picked up their weapons and equipment and rushed over, forming a semi-circle, with Liu Qian and his group in the middle. Mu Jian and others quickly took over the weapons as well, loading them.
The bodyguards’ guns were pointed towards the forest. However, Mu Jian and others did not point their guns at the forest like the bodyguards did, because to them, even if it was a pack of wolves, it would only be a handful or even just over a dozen. It wasn’t a big deal to them. One person, in particular, a soldier, didn’t even draw his gun and just stood his ground.
The other bodyguards weren’t yet clear about what was going on.
"Team leader Qi, what’s going on?" Monkey asked nervously.
"Brother Yuan just mentioned about a wolf pack." Qi Tian spoke with a serious expression. He too was curious; was the soldier’s vigilance more acute than a dog’s? That didn’t make sense.
"There’s no need to be too nervous. Wolves usually don’t attack humans," Mu Jian attempted to reassure them. After all, it was just a pack of wolves. They had battled many before.
Despite what Mu Jian said, the others couldn’t dare to relax. Until things settled down, anything was possible.
Not long after, just when everyone was wondering where the wolves were...
Several figures appeared at the edge of the forest, slowly increasing in number, becoming more and more numerous... so numerous it seemed a bit excessive. By rough estimates, there were over thirty of them and the numbers were still increasing...
Watching the ever-growing wolf pack, Chai Ren swallowed hard and said, "Jianzi, you said wolves generally don’t attack humans, right?"
Mu Jian nodded, "Yes. Humans aren’t part of their food chain. They ordinarily won’t attack humans unless...there are many of them, or they are starving." Seeing so many wolves, Mu Jian too couldn’t guarantee anything.
"That’s good then. The forest lacks many things, but it shouldn’t lack food," Chai Ren sighed in relief.
"Hopefully."
However, as more and more wolves began to emerge, Chai Ren began to waver in his beliefs. Damn it. There must be hundreds of them. When there are this many, food must definitely be scarce.
"Jianzi, have you ever seen a wolf pack this large?" Chai Ren asked.
"No. Usually, wolf packs contain only three to five individuals; the larger ones might have dozens. A pack of this size is rare across the whole of the United States, mainly due to scarcity of food. They can’t form large packs. But here, there are hundreds. Honestly, this kind of pack size is unheard of. I don’t understand why it’s appearing here. Could it be the convergence of several wolf packs, or does such a large pack actually exist? I have no clue," Mu Jian shook his head slowly, becoming increasingly nervous. Because, the number of wolves kept rising. Confronted with this reality, all previous assumptions seemed absurd.
"So, what do we do?" Chai Ren asked.
Mu Jian took a deep breath and said, "Wait, let’s see how things develop. After all, we have a lot of people, and the wolves might not dare to attack us. Besides, we have weapons." Despite saying this, Mu Jian was beginning to feel fear. A wolf pack of this size, with their relentless craving for food and desperate measures, there was more than a 50% chance of an altercation between the two sides today.
However, Mu Jian did not blame Chai Ren for insisting on hunting. He knew that those who cannot accept reality won’t achieve much. The people who constantly make complaints are the most tiresome. Faced with a predestined calamity, the best thing to do is to find a way to get through it, not to bemoan your fate. This was the education he received from his father since childhood. Encountering a problem, solve the problem. That’s all there is to it.
"Should we call the police?" Chai Ren whispered. When there is trouble, call the cops.
"Do you think there will be time? Unless we send fighter jets," Mu Jian responded irritably.
"Oh...right." Chai Ren bitterly laughed. He regretted how today unfolded, at least for a brief moment. But there was no time for pointless emotions during a crisis. The focus now was how to get out of this predicament.
So, a group of humans and a pack of wolves were at a standoff, with the dogs’ barks persisting. The wolves, however, weren’t afraid and were responding with their own barks. Based on numbers alone, the humans were looked down upon by the wolves.
Soon, more and more wolves appeared, crowding the area. Mu Jian estimated that there were nearly two hundred of them. And the deer they had just killed was being surrounded by some wolves, one of them feasting on it.
It seemed that the one eating was the Alpha. It was much larger than the other wolves, with a particularly ferocious gaze.
Watching the Alpha wolf devour their lunch, Mu Jian, Chai Ren, and the others were starting to sweat profusely.
Although they had guns, they had to consider the enemy’s numbers. The wolves were only twenty meters away. In a matter of seconds, they could reach them. With their reaction speed, they could only kill about twenty or thirty wolves. After that, they would be faced with the dangerous prospect of close combat. They certainly didn’t want to become the wolves’ lunch.
"How could such a large group of wolves have formed?" Mu Jian was extremely curious. It made no sense.
"..."
No one could answer him.
The standoff continued. 𝙣𝙤𝙫𝒑𝙪𝒃.𝒄𝒐𝙢
Everybody had serious expressions on their faces, except for the soldier. He looked indifferent, as though it was none of his business. Looking around, people started to wonder if the soldier was incapable of showing emotion. It seemed strange under these circumstances, where any normal person would be unable to remain unmoved.
