Chapter 142: Chapter 142: Difficulty
Upon hearing Yu Shiya’s words, which seemed to make a mountain out of a molehill, Tong Yao found it very amusing. To those unaware of the entanglement between them, it might appear that Yu Shiya was approaching the matter from a professional standpoint, prioritizing the well-being of the patient.
However, those who knew about their relationship would easily discern Yu Shiya’s intentional attempt to make things difficult for her.
Regrettably, she wasn’t mute. If Yu Shiya can speak, so can she.
With that in mind, Tong Yao calmly explained, "Dr. Yu, as I mentioned earlier, I sought a doctor but found none around. It was only when I saw the child’s father choking him that I intervened. Moreover, I have basic knowledge of water rescue. Given the urgency of the situation, I decided to act. It wasn’t done out of reckless heroism, as you suggested."
In front of the doctors from Kyoto, she had already lost her dignity. She couldn’t let her behavior affect Si Chen’s career.
"Acquired rescue skills?" Yu Shiya scoffed, not addressing Tong Yao’s statement of searching for the doctor. Instead, she asked, "Do you believe that the bit of knowledge you’ve obtained from wherever can challenge our professional doctors?"
"Dr. Si, I think Dr. Yu makes a good point. You should clarify for your wife the gravity of this situation. This is a matter of life and death, not child’s play. A mishap in a hospital is substantial, ruining the reputation of the entire hospital," said the head of the gynecology department, who stood beside the dean. A woman in her forties, she had the most fashionable curled hairstyle and a stern expression that revealed her strong-willed personality.
She had a close relationship with Cheng Yu, the two being best friends for years, and had long disapproved of the matter between Yu Shiya and Si Chen. She had even tried to sway Cheng Yu’s counsel to get Si Chen dismissed. However, Yu Zhengxiong was characterized with integrity. He was already embarrassed from the previous incident of advising a couple to divorce, and now whenever Cheng Yu attempts to bring up the subject, he would sternly warn her not to mention it again.
Tong Yao realized they were targeting not just her but Si Chen as well. Was Yu Shiya embracing an "if I can’t have him, no one can" mentality?
This thought made Tong Yao become more calm. The more they tried to trouble her, the more she could not falter. Si Chen still had a long journey ahead. There will be more traps in the future, and she needed to be able to handle unforeseen incidents effectively, without being a burden.
Tong Yao looked at Si Chen, who seemed utterly composed, as if not worried at all. He simply moved closer to her, subtly indicating his support. His actions encouraged Tong Yao, and she took a deep breath, reiterating her earlier words.
"Please do not deliberately avoid the main points in my statement. I’ve made it clear that I went looking for a doctor but found no one. Seeing the boy’s father strangling him, I stepped in. Should I, in order to avoid responsibility, stand by apathetically even though I have the knowledge to perform first aid? Would that be the right thing to do?"
"This was an unexpected event that no one wished to occur. I used my first aid knowledge to save a life. If you don’t want to acknowledge this, that’s fine. But should you reproach me for saving a life just because I’m not a professional doctor? Does that mean only doctors are eligible for rescue, and others are disqualified during emergencies? Are these the words that a doctor should speak? Who made such a rule? I’d like to be enlightened."
It was almost time for the doctors to start their shift. Many people were waiting to register for appointments. Although they didn’t know what had happened, hearing Tong Yao’s words made them nod in agreement.
It’s certainly best for a doctor to be present during an emergency, but during their absence, it would be beneficial to have someone else with knowledge of first aid present.
Upon hearing Tong Yao’s words, Professor Qu nodded. Apparently, he agreed with her argument.
Originally believing she had the upper hand, Yu Shiya was taken aback to find that even Professor Qu from Kyoto agreed with Tong Yao’s words, which left her unable to respond effectively.
Being older and more experienced, the head of the gynecology department was more cunning. She shifted the blame onto the on-call doctor: "Are you sure you couldn’t find the doctor on duty? If as you say, the on-call doctor was not in the office, this may be a serious issue. We need to investigate."
It was quite clear with her remark; she was questioning the truth of Tong Yao’s statement and wanted to confront the on-call doctor.
"Dean, Professor Qu, you’re here! I heard a child had drowned. How’s the situation?" Dr. Pan hurried over, breaking out in a sweat because of the large crowd. What a coincidence! There were rarely any sudden incidents during his shifts, but one occurred during his shift when officials from Kyoto were visiting. Although he had a sudden stomachache and needed to use the restroom, he still had to handle the incident. He didn’t have the ability to foresee the future.
"Dr. Pan, you’ve come at the right time." The head of the gynecology department stared at him with a stern face. "A child nearly drowned earlier. Dr. Si’s wife mentioned that you weren’t in your office. Is that true?"
Having said that, the Dean glanced confidently at Tong Yao. Given the seriousness of the situation, even if Dr. Pan wasn’t in his office earlier, he wouldn’t admit it in front of the Dean and Professor Qu from Kyoto.
Yu Shiya’s complexion eased a bit as she and the head of the gynecology department clearly had the same thought.
Feeling everyone’s gaze on him, Dr. Pan admitted with a guilty conscience, "I think I ate something that upset my stomach, and it hurt so much that I had to use the restroom. I didn’t expect that something like this would happen in my absence. It’s my responsibility."
At his words, everyone fell silent. It turned out Tong Yao was telling the truth about seeking Dr. Pan, who happened to have a stomachache and needed to use the restroom. A classic instance of when nature calls. Anyone could have been caught in such a situation. Neither could Dr. Pan be blamed for this.
Moreover, Tong Yao had acted out of kindness and successfully saved a life. As Tong Yao had said, was it wrong to save someone in such a situation? So, during such incidents, should everyone choose to be a spectator? Would that be too indifferent?
Even animals help one another when injured. Nobody knows when misfortune might befall them. If everyone chooses to be a bystander in these situations, what would the world become?
Yu Shiya and the head of the gynecology department didn’t expect Dr. Pan to have needed to use the restroom. Their expressions, which had just softened, hardened again. Yet they said nothing further.
With the truth revealed, Tong Yao was now the hero who saved a life. They, on the other hand, appeared narrow-minded and overly aggressive.
Yu Zhengxiong had a darkened and stern face, an understatement for how ugly it looked.
