Chapter 143: Chapter 143: You Married A Good Daughter-in-Law
Yu Shiya was his daughter. Just before entering the hospital building, Professor Qu was praising Shiya. He was pleased with his accomplished daughter. Who could have thought that such a turn of events would occur in just a quarter of an hour?
Others might not understand Shiya, but as her father, Yu Zhengxiong understood his daughter. She was visibly acting out of personal resentment, obsessing over Tong Yao’s act of saving a life. She sought to belittle his daughter-in-law’s actions, and as a father, he felt shame for his daughter’s behavior.
Despite his understanding, he had to refrain from voicing his disapproval due to the presence of outsiders. Now, hearing Doctor Pan’s explanation, and as the Dean, he had to step in to wrap things up. He could not afford to be the laughing stock of outsiders.
"Such a sudden situation wasn’t anticipated by anyone, so we can’t blame Doctor Pan." Yu Zhengxiong took a deep breath, turning his head to look at Tong Yao. His expression softened a bit. He praised, "Dr. Si’s wife has learned first aid knowledge. She set a great example by saving a person’s life. This heroic act deserves recognition, and she is a role model among doctors’ wives that everyone should learn from. I would like to thank you on behalf of the People’s Hospital."
Upon hearing her father praising Tong Yao, Shiya pressed her lips together and didn’t utter a sound. Her face flushed as red as the glow of a sunset. A person without any professional medical qualification, simply utilizing basic first aid skills, ultimately saved someone and received everyone’s approval and praise. As professional doctors, their lifesaving actions were taken for granted. Yet, if there were a single surgical accident, they could lose their medical license - how was that fair?
Although she felt indignant, Shiya held back her objections. The person speaking now was her father. If she continued to resist, it wouldn’t look good.
"I just did what was necessary. I believe that anyone who happened to have first aid knowledge wouldn’t stand by in such a situation." Tong Yao knew how to deliver beautiful speeches, too. She would argue when she needed to, and she would also manage to be humble when praised.
The last sentence was deliberately aimed at Shiya and Director Zheng. But then again, if there were a second time and if she had the time to weigh the pros and cons, Tong Yao couldn’t guarantee that she would still act as daringly as before.
Upon hearing her words, Director Zheng almost jeered, but he was stopped by a glance from Yu Zhengxiong. After much deliberation, Director Zheng decided to shut up.
"Was this first aid knowledge taught to you by Doctor Si?" After a long silence, Professor Qu looked at Tong Yao with admiration. He obviously liked this young woman very much. "You handle things calmly, without being arrogant or flustered. It’s rare to see these qualities in young people nowadays."
"No." Professor Qu’s kind face made speaking to him easy, like speaking to a kindly grandfather. Tong Yao casually replied, "I learned this in college. Our school once offered a first aid course."
Tong Yao wasn’t lying. She had indeed learned these skills in college, just not in this lifetime. In her previous life, she excelled in first aid classes and was even nominated for an award due to her outstanding performance. If she didn’t possess some genuine skills, she wouldn’t have been so daring. After all, this was a matter of life and death.
Upon hearing this, Professor Qu laughed heartily, his impression of Tong Yao improved even more. "You’re an honest girl. Judging by your accent, you’re from Kyoto too, aren’t you?"
"Yes, I’m from Jiang City in Kyoto." Tong Yao nodded, given that Professor Qu was also from Kyoto, a sense of intimacy filled her eyes.
Professor Qu’s smile deepened, he turned to Si Chen, "Doctor Si, you have a good wife."
Si Chen seemed to understand what Professor Qu was implying. A subtle indulgence filled his eyes.
The two doctors who had accompanied him also nodded in agreement, praising Tong Yao.
Everyone present, including the Dean, had different expressions on their faces.
They were unsure whether they should mock Tong Yao for being naive or praise her for being smart.
Call her naive? She had saved someone and brought honor to Si Chen.
Call her smart? She took the initiative to save someone in the high-profile setting of the hospital lobby. If she hadn’t managed to save him, it would have turned into a big issue, potentially inciting trouble from the patient’s family. Not only her but Si Chen would also be implicated.
Luckily, she managed to save the person using her bit of luck. It was an excellent opportunity for Si Chen to shine. As long as they admitted it was Si Chen who taught her, since no one else knew about it.
But she insisted on telling the truth.
Hearing Professor Qu praising Tong Yao, Shiya felt a burning feeling inside, as if to scorch her cheeks. When Professor Qu had praised her earlier, he had merely given a brief compliment, keeping it very official. Now, while praising Tong Yao, he was far from stingy, smiling like a kind grandfather, and even started a casual conversation with her.
She really could not understand what kind of magic Tong Yao possessed that would make everyone side with her. Was it simply because Tong Yao was also from Kyoto?
"There she is, she’s over there! Let’s hurry." There was a sudden commotion in the crowd. They all looked over to see the three large men who had brought the child to the hospital, their faces flushed as they rushed over. They looked as if they had seen a child trafficker, afraid that someone might run off, ready to fight as if their lives depended on it.
Before anyone could react, the three men were already at the front with the child. Si Chen immediately stepped in and shielded Tong Yao, and the others, fearing they might get involved, swiftly put distance between themselves and Tong Yao.
"Let’s keep our cool. It was indeed the hospital’s responsibility that the doctor on duty did not treat the child in a timely manner. I am the Dean, and I would like to apologize on behalf of the hospital." Dean Yu tried to keep the situation under control with a gentle demeanor.
Obviously, everyone thought the men came to give Tong Yao trouble. After all, in such a situation, it was reckless and irresponsible for a woman without medical training to attempt to save someone. It was as if she was joking with someone else’s child’s life; no parent would tolerate this.
The child was a treasured piece of their heart, not an experimental subject.
Every hospital had seen its share of medical disputes, some major, others minor. Si Chen’s wife, Tong Yao, seemed to bring him nothing but trouble, always brewing some sort of issue. If it continued like this, he feared Si Chen might have to change his career.
"The person who saved the patient was her, our hospital doctor’s wife. She studied a little bit of first aid knowledge in school, and assumed that she had the ability to represent the doctors to save people. Fortunately, your child was lucky and didn’t have any significant problem," Director Zheng pointed out Tong Yao, who was standing behind Si Chen. Her intention was clear: since Tong Yao was the one who caused the issue, the men should take it up with her. Tong Yao was not a doctor at the hospital and had no connection with it.
This dodging from responsibility made Professor Qu frown, and even Yu Zhengxiong’s face changed.
Professor Qu squinted at Director Zheng, clearly dissatisfied, but he held his tongue as it was not his place to voice out in another person’s hospital.
Si Chen remained silent, his brows furrowed, while subtly shifting Tong Yao behind him. The men had not yet clarified their intentions, and might not necessarily be here to cause trouble. They would see how things turned out.
