Chapter 244: Chapter 244: Going and Returning
"Shameless fool, you dare to call me directly. Watch yourself."
Tong Xiangqiao, clouded by rage, didn’t care about the objections of the three people. She moved like a mad bull, pushed Wen Yun aside, and raised her hand to hit Tong Yao. Suddenly she was stopped, intense pain flowing from her hand before she could react. She was pushed back, stumbled, and fell onto the hospital bed.
"Ahchen." Seeing Si Chen, who had suddenly appeared in the ward, Tong Yao was surprised. "Weren’t you supposed to be at work?"
Frankly speaking, she was as relieved and happy as a child supported by their parents in a fight, seeing Si Chen’s unexpected arrival.
"I brought you breakfast." Si Chen passed the breakfast in his left hand to Tong Yao and then looked coldly at Tong Xiangqiao.
Although he had never met Tong Xiangqiao, he could tell her identity due to her resemblance to Tong Yaohui.
As for the other person, it was obvious that she was Tong Yao’s mother.
Seeing her son-in-law had arrived, Wen Yun breathed a sigh of relief. She was glad that Xiaochen arrived, otherwise her daughter would have been beaten. Both she and Tong Yaohui couldn’t bear to lay a finger on their daughter. Thinking about this, Wen Yun’s face turned cold.
"Tong Xiangqiao, don’t think you can bully me because I’m gentle. If you dare to lay a finger on Yaoyao, I will fight you with a knife."
"Get out."
Tong Xiangqiao’s attempt to hit Tong Yao had crossed Tong Yaohui’s line. He roared in anger and threw a pillow straight at his sister.
Tong Xiangqiao was hit by the pillow just as she got up. Seeing her brother rage and her brother-in-law joined him, she was genuinely scared for once. She lowered her raised hand and kept quiet. Yao Rong, who was standing by, was also frightened by the scene.
Tong Yaohui had a temper right from his youth. He seemed calmer as he aged, but when he was angry, he could be quite terrifying. Si Chen also seemed tough, knocking Tong Xiangqiao down with one swift move. Even Wen Yun, who seemed mild and gentle but dared threaten with a knife, made them formidable. It would be of no advantage to continue causing trouble against them.
Yao Rong exchanged a glance with Tong Xiangqiao and then they both left the ward, like defeated roosters, spirits low.
The onlookers at the door, seeing that the troublemakers had left, slowly dissipated.
Seeing the scene caused by his sister-in-law and his sister, Tong Yaohui was embarrassed and sighed in annoyance. He said to Si Chen, "Xiaochen, I’m sorry for troubling you. You shouldn’t worry about us. As soon as the doctor arrives, we will process the discharge. You should get to the hospital; we can’t afford to delay you."
"Yes, Xiaochen, you’d better hurry to work! Work is important." Wen Yun was also worried about Si Chen being delayed for work.
Considering it was getting late, and he still had to ride the bus home, Si Chen didn’t linger. He nodded, "I bought soy milk, steamed buns, and fried dough sticks. Don’t worry about anything else. Eat first."
After speaking, he advised Tong Yao: "When I’m not here, try not to get into any fights."
Tong Yao was thin and weak. Compared to her, Yao Rong and Tong Xiangqiao were strong, fighting them wouldn’t be a wise choice.
"It was her who wanted to hit me first, not me." Tong Yao pouted in defense, pushing Si Chen to the door, "Okay, now you go to work! Don’t be late."
Unlike Li City, the hospital here was much larger with more intense office politics. Since Si Chen was recently invited to work here by Professor Qiu, some jealous people had set their sights on him. It was wise to be cautious and not give them anything to gossip about.
After bidding Si Chen goodbye, Tong Yao opened the bag and called Wen Yun and Tong Yaohui to breakfast. She said cheerfully, "Dad, Mom, don’t take to heart what happened earlier. It’s not worth it if it upsets you, plus it would only play into their hands. We should hold our temper, handle the discharge process, and let them fret."
Wen Yun replied, filled with concern, "I’m not upset, I’m just worried about you and your dad. You’ve never been wronged since you were a child. Neither your father nor I could raise a hand against you, but she wanted to hit someone. And your dad, at his age, shouldn’t have to suffer this."
Listening to his wife, Tong Yaohui also felt uneasy. At his age, he was still causing distress and worry for his daughter and wife. He didn’t know how to describe his feelings.
Having such a problematic brother and sister, he felt helpless.
"Once the house is sold, I’m going to act as if I have neither brother nor sister."
His brother and sister had no feelings of familial bond towards him, so there’s no need for future contact.
Tong Yao sighed, "If I were a boy, you guys wouldn’t have to put up with all this."
Wen Yun patted Tong Yao’s head, "Don’t talk nonsense, whether you’re a boy or a girl, you’re still our daughter."
Tong Yaohui said sternly, "It’s a new age, anyone favoring boys is simply ignorant."
Listening to her parents, Tong Yao felt warmth in her heart. She secretly determined to be very filial to them, to show everyone that even if they only had a daughter, they could still live a blissful and fulfilling life in old age.
The mood of the three family members improved significantly after some chat.
The patient in the neighboring bed had witnessed another family conflict and couldn’t help but lament how this hospital stay was unexpectedly entertaining.
He thought to himself how awful the sister-in-law and sister were, bullying them just because they didn’t have a son. Even as women, they still favored boys over girls.
After breakfast, Tong Yao packed up Tong Yaohui’s belongings. When it was time for work, they carried out the discharge procedure. After they got home, Wen Yun packed her and Tong Yaohui’s belongings. By the time she finished packing, Tong Yao had already tidied up the dining room and kitchen.
Their daughter, who had never washed a dish before, had grown up and was now capable of managing the kitchen well. Wen Yun felt both proud and concerned. Her eyes filled with tears involuntarily.
"Mom, why are you crying?" Tong Yao was planning to leave after packing. She turned around and saw Wen Yun standing at the kitchen door with reddened eyes, which startled her.
"I’m just happy." Wen Yun smiled and spoke seriously, "You’ve finally grown up."
Upon hearing this, Tong Yao hugged Wen Yun’s arm and acted like a spoiled child, "Before, you and dad were my world, supporting me, now that I have grown up, of course I will repay you."
Wen Yun smiled and said, "You’re just sweet-talker."
Worried that Yao Rong and Tong Xiangqiao would cause more trouble, they didn’t waste any more time. They grabbed their things and stepped out of the house. They hailed a cab and went straight to the family’s home. After settling Tong Yaohui, Tong Yao went out with Wen Yun to search for a house.
The two of them walked around the vicinity of the hospital for half a day before finding a house. The previous tenant had just moved out two days ago. The environment was nice, it had a sunny living room and bedroom, though the price was a bit steep. But it wasn’t a problem for the affluent Tong family.
Wen Yun was also satisfied with the place and decided to rent it right away.
