Chapter 299: Chapter 299: Medical Trouble
By the time another store opens up, the four stores will have an annual income of tens of thousands. It should take no more than two years to build a house in the suburbs. In the meantime, it would be great to find other investment opportunities.
Speaking of other investment opportunities, Tong Yao couldn’t help but think of Gu Hongwei. In her previous life, she knew a bit about him. He seems to have made his fortune in the fruit business and then, in the mid-nineties, suddenly switched to internet technology business, totally unrelated to the fruit business.
From there, he rose rapidly to success.
Tong Yao trusted Gu Hongwei’s character. If she could get some shares in his business in the future, she wouldn’t have to worry about making a living for the rest of her life.
After tallying the accounts, it was already six-thirty in the evening. She saw off Tong Yaohui and Wen Yun. Just as she was about to leave the shop, she bumped into Deng Wenwen, who was rushing over.
"Sister Yaoyao, I was just about to find you," said Wenwen.
"Why are you in such a hurry? What happened?" When seeing Wenwen in such a hurry, Tong Yao became anxious. In the family courtyard, only matters relating to Si Chen could involve her. The last time Wenwen came to find her was also because of Si Chen.
Deng Wenwen took a few deep breaths, hastily explaining, "There was a hospital disturbance this afternoon. I heard that Professor Qu and Doctor Si were stabbed. The situation seems quite serious; the police were even mobilized. As soon as I heard the news, I rushed over to find you."
Tong Yao felt her heart tighten. Without further thought, she immediately hailed a taxi nearby, dragged Wenwen into it, and gave the driver the name of the hospital. It was only then that she was able to calm down a bit.
She proceeded to ask, "Do you know the specifics?"
Deng Wenwen wiped the sweat off her forehead and shook her head. "I just got off work and heard Liu Qing discussing this matter with someone else. I learned about the hospital disturbance when I asked about it. I went to your house to look for you but couldn’t find you. I went to Zhou Lei’s place, still couldn’t find you, so I came here."
Tong Yao pursed her lips, remaining silent. Worry filled her eyes as she tried to piece together the situation. She had heard of hospital disturbances in her previous life. They were generally triggered by emotionally charged relatives of patients who had died in the hospital.
Sometimes, the hospital bears most of the responsibility; other times, the family members of the patients are unreasonable.
Now, a hospital disturbance probably means that someone lost their life. Since the family members of the patient went to find Professor Qu and Si Chen, it implies that the two had jointly performed the surgery. She just didn’t know who was the chief surgeon - whether it was negligence on the doctor’s part that led to the patient’s death, or if the patient’s situation was already very dire to begin with.
Surgeries always bear risks, especially major surgeries. Despite signing surgical consent forms, some people cannot accept their family member’s death and insist on causing trouble for the doctor.
She didn’t know whether Si Chen’s injuries are serious. As a doctor, his hands must absolutely be unharmed.
"Sister Yaoyao, don’t worry too much. With so many people in the hospital, Doctor Si’s injuries shouldn’t be too serious," said Wenwen. She had hardly finished her sentence before she hastily covered her mouth and added, "Maybe others got it wrong. Maybe Doctor Si wasn’t hurt, or just suffered a superficial injury, like a small cut. Remember the last time, when they said he accepted a bribe? Didn’t that turn out to be a misunderstanding?"
Looking at Wenwen trying to keep pace with her thoughts and words, Tong Yao smiled lightly and said in a soft voice, "I’m fine, don’t worry too much. Ah Chen should be okay."
This was meant to reassure Wenwen, but also herself. In her previous life, Si Chen was a world-renowned doctor. So, he would definitely be able to pull through.
Even Tang the Monk faced 81 trials on his journey to the West. If everything had always gone smoothly for him, it would be as unlikely as winning the lottery.
No doctor can guarantee a 100% success rate for every operation.
The taxi soon arrived at the hospital entrance. Tong Yao and Wenwen got off the taxi. Just as they were about to walk away, the taxi driver poked his head out to remind them, "You haven’t paid the fare."
"Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot," Tong Yao quickly pulled out her money from her pocket and handed it to the driver.
Seeing this, Wenwen looked worriedly at Tong Yao. She knew that despite her seemingly relaxed outward appearance, Tong Yao must be really worried.
When Tong Yao found Si Chen, he was coming down from the hospital building. Upon seeing that Si Chen was okay, Tong Yao heaved a sigh of relief. As soon as she relaxed, her eyes uncontrollably welled up with tears. She ran over to hug him tightly, only to hear him grunt softly.
"Are you hurt? Where are you hurt?"
Tong Yao quickly let go of him, checking his hands and arms for injuries. Confirming they were okay, she breathed a sigh of relief, but then moved to check his chest, only to have her hand held back by Si Chen.
"Don’t worry, I’m fine," Si Chen reassured her gently, "Let’s go home first."
Tong Yao nodded and asked, "How’s Professor Qu?"
A hint of darkness flashed across Si Chen’s eyes as he pursed his lips, "It’s not good. He’s been hurt in the arm. He won’t be able to perform surgeries anymore."
For a doctor, the sensitivity of his hands and arms is paramount. Professor Qu was stabbed twice, injuring his tendons and bones. Even if they healed well, he would not be able to perform major tumor surgeries ever again.
Wenwen, standing nearby, was shocked, her hand over her mouth, too frightened to make a sound. Professor Qu was a renowned tumor professor in their hospital. Many people came to him seeking treatment, calling him the pillar of the hospital. No one had imagined that he would lose his ability to perform surgeries because of a hospital disturbance.
To a doctor, it was no different from been hacked off both hands.
Tong Yao was also stunned. She hadn’t expected the hospital disturbance to be this serious. She felt fortunate that Si Chen was alright.
Knowing that it was inconvenient to talk here, Tong Yao quickly helped him back to the family courtyard. Wenwen cleverly left, realizing that the couple needed some time alone.
Once back in their quarters, the first thing Tong Yao does was to check Si Chen’s wound. He had been hurt on his back, which was now covered in blood-soaked gauze. Even though the blood had dried, one could imagine how deep the wound was, and how much it must have hurt at the time. Si Chen casually mentioned that he had required more than ten stitches. Tong Yao felt deeply distressed.
Si Chen changed into a clean shirt and refused to let Tong Yao look at the wound anymore. Seeing the distressed tears in her eyes, Si Chen found it more uncomfortable than his injury itself. He lifted his hand and softly pinched her cheek, comforting her.
"Don’t cry. It doesn’t hurt."
Tong Yao glared at him. "You’re not made of play dough. How can it not hurt?"
Si Chen started talking about what happened at the hospital, trying to divert Tong Yao’s attention.
"The patient was brought in this morning with an acute brain tumor. He needed to undergo surgery as soon as possible. The unwilling party was the patient’s son; he insisted on waiting for his father to come. As a result, the delay led to the patient’s death."
