Chapter 300: Chapter 300: Heartache

"The patient’s husband arrived later, and when he found out that his wife had died, he was so agitated that he decided to have a conversation with Professor Qu. Professor Qu wasn’t prepared for it, and was attacked by a knife that he pulled from his clothes, injuring his arm. I arrived after the fact and got a little bit hurt while restraining him," recounted Si Chen.

Si Chen’s articulation was exemplary; he described the incident clearly and calmly, even skimming over the part about his own injury as if it were a trivial matter. But the reality was far from that.

The patient’s family aimed specifically to slash Professor Qu’s arm with a knife. When they saw Si Chen override, they tried to slash his arm too, but Si Chen dodged, and though his arm remained unscathed, he got a knife wound in his back.

"They refused to sign the surgical consent form, then laid the blame on the doctors. His son must have inherited his mind, hence not signing the consent form, right? His son’s ignorance cost his mother’s life, and then he injures Professor Qu and you ignorantly. Do this father and son hold a deep grudge against the hospital?" Tong Yao was so infuriated that she felt like she was spewing fire. Thankfully, Si Chen’s arm remained unscathed.

Only Professor Qu was to be pitied.

Such a good and capable doctor was ruined by an ignorant father and son; it was truly lamentable.

"He’s already been apprehended, so there’s no need to worry," Si Chen consoled softly while ruffling her hair. "Incidents like these are a matter of probability. The best-case scenario is that they don’t happen, but if they do, they are unavoidable. Some family members just can’t accept the death of their loved ones and may act out irrationally. We can’t change their minds, we can only manage to protect ourselves."

Thinking of Professor Qu, Si Chen had a pang of pain in his eyes. The medical community had lost a great talent due to the actions of one ignorant individual.

Though when Professor Qu consoled him, he jokingly said that he could retire early. As a doctor, he could understand the pain of no longer being able to perform surgeries while still capable.

Tong Yao was so distressed by the wound on his body that she couldn’t help herself. "In the future, if you encounter emotional family members, keep your distance. Don’t argue with them; it’s pointless to reason with irrational people. Just call the police straightaway."

"Right."

Si Chen nodded obediently, like a child, melting Tong Yao’s heart. She took him to the bathroom and began to wipe the blood stains on his back with a towel that hadn’t been cleaned off.

Despite appearing thin in his clothes, Si Chen’s back was full of tightly knotted muscles showing off his strength. He would go for a run in the morning when he had a day off and would manage to squeeze in some exercise, which could be one of the reasons for his good physique.

After all, performing surgeries was extremely physically draining, requiring the physician to be in good health.

"With such a severe injury, you need to rest at home for a bit. Otherwise, it will hurt if the wound gets tugged, and you’ll only be able to sleep on your stomach or sideways at night."

Si Chen usually sleeps on his back and sleeps soundly throughout the night, usually maintaining the same position as when he first fell asleep. He never tumbles around in bed like her. She wonders if suddenly changing his sleeping position would affect his sleep.

Nodding lightly, Si Chen said, "The hospital gave me two days off. Let’s go for a meal at my parents’ place tomorrow. It’s been a while since we last visited."

"Then we’ll have to go early. They open their shop at nine in the morning and are completely engrossed in their store. When I want to have a meal with them, they refuse, saying it interferes with their business. But when you, their son-in-law, visit, they don’t even mind taking the whole day off."

As Tong Yao’s rant turned bitter, she would have suspected that Si Chen was their biological child and she had been switched at birth in the hospital, if not for their age difference.

Grinning, Si Chen said, "Don’t tell them about my injury to avoid causing them worry."

Resting her chin on her hands, Tong Yao gave him a side glance, "I’m sure it won’t be kept a secret for long." Even in this era when communication was slow, any incident would spread like wildfire, reaching epidemic-like speed.

"They will not be so worried once they know about it after my recovery," said Si Chen.

Tong Yao puffed her cheeks but didn’t retort his statement.

It was the best time to sleep in the early summer mornings, but Tong Yao couldn’t stay asleep. She got up early to cook some lean meat porridge. After they finished their meal, they headed to her mother’s house.

What they didn’t know was that just as they left the residential court, Lin Man and Shi Yan arrived. When they found out Si Chen was resting, Lin Man’s face turned grim. Shi Yan followed closely behind her and couldn’t help but finally speak up when they left the hospital.

"The patient’s mother died in his hands, he surely wouldn’t dare to come to the hospital. He’s a doctor with no morals, he was lucky this time, only sustaining minor injuries."

Lin Man stopped in her tracks and gave him a disgusted glare, "It was Xiao Mingqiang’s refusal to sign that cost the life. How is that related to Si Chen? It’s common knowledge that for major risky surgeries, the family’s consent is required; anyone with half a brain knows that. Xiao Mingqiang’s indecision delayed the treatment, resulting in the patient’s death, so why blame Si Chen? People like Xiao Zhenggang should be convicted immediately."

Xiao Zhenggang is Xiao Mingqiang’s father. They both knew Xiao Mingqiang and also ate at Xiao’s house. Although Xiao Zhenggang had a temper and was a bit severe, whenever he saw them, he was relatively enthusiastic.

Shi Yan hadn’t expected that Lin Man would say such words for Si Chen; his face instantly turned ashen. "For a man you’ve only known for a few days, you’d talk about Uncle Xiao like that, Manman are you made of steel?"

Lin Man detested Shi Yan’s ignorance and retorted sharply, "He attempted to murder and should be punished. They are at fault here. Don’t you realise that with doctors like Professor Qu no longer able to perform surgeries, many cancer patients’ lives are at risk?"

"There are numerous cancer specialists in the world, the absence of one won’t make a difference," Shi Yan argued forcefully. Then his words turned back towards Si Chen, "You know that Si Chen is married, but you came to visit a married man, how is this different from debasing yourself? Have you ever considered how others will view you for this?"

’Slap’

With the secret hidden in her heart laid bare by Shi Yan, Lin Man was overcome with shame and anger and slapped Shi Yan across his face. His left cheek rapidly turned red, and his eyes were filled with rage as he watched in disbelief at Lin Man.

"You hit me for a married man? Lin Man, where do I fall short compared to Si Chen? You’d rather be a despised mistress than be with me, is this your fate?"
