Chapter 355: Chapter 355: Finding a Spouse
"My younger uncle told me that getting divorced is now a very normal thing, nothing to be ashamed of. He and his wife have already divorced," Si Xiaohui raised her chin, from her tone it seemed she was proud of the divorce.
Lin Fengying was taken aback, "Your younger uncle and his wife divorced?"
"They’ve been divorced for quite a few days. Mom, when will you have time to come over? My younger uncle and I eat out every day. I’m fed up with outside food. I prefer your homemade dishes."
Although Si Xiaohui used to find outside food delicious and wished she could eat out every day, after staying in Kyoto and eating outside food for a while, she realized how much she missed home-cooked meals.
No matter how delicious outside food might be, you can’t have it all the time. It’s only good for a change of pace now and then.
Now that her younger uncle and his wife are divorced, as long as her mom comes over to take care of his daily life, he wouldn’t think about getting married again. He will be nice to her all the time.
Lin Fengying was pretty moved, but considering that Zhang Lijuan’s baby is not even a month old, she glanced at Si Boyi and told Xiaohui on the phone: "Your sister-in-law just gave birth, I need to take care of her for her confinement period."
Si Xiaohui pouts, changing her tune swiftly, "Your second sister-in-law has already had a baby, and your older sister-in-law isn’t showing any signs at all. Why don’t you think about helping them? We have many fertility recipes in our village, don’t we? You can help find some for them. The last time I said she was a chicken that can’t lay eggs, she hit me. If she returns to the village and people talk about it, could she still go around hitting other people? People there aren’t as easy to bully as me. If she dares to hit anyone, she’s asking to be beaten to death."
As soon as Si Xiaohui thinks about the times when she asked Tong Yao for help but was ignored, she feels furious. Now that her younger uncle has divorced, and she’s increasingly favored, she doesn’t need to worry about what Tong Yao thinks.
"Don’t talk nonsense." Lin Fengying scolded softly, then shifted the topic, "I’m not busy at home anyway. I can’t plant all the fields by myself so I ’ve given it to your cousin to plant. Once your sister’s confinement period is over, I’ll come and find some work to do."
"You don’t even need to go to work!" Upon hearing that her mother was coming, Si Xiaohui hastily began to coax her: "You just need to wash clothes and cook for my younger uncle and me. He said that he would open a milk tea shop for me next spring and let me be the boss."
Previously, her younger uncle was unwilling to let her compete with his brother. However, now that he and his wife have divorced, he supports her in opening a milk tea shop.
Even if she doesn’t earn much in a month, the money she earns will be enough for her to spend.
Hearing Si Xiaohui’s words, Lin Fengying’s mood gradually improved. Despite this, she reminded: "You’re a grown-up, don’t keep being lazy. You should do some housework for your younger uncle and not ask him for money recklessly."
Somewhat impatiently, Si Xiaohui responded: "Ah, Mom! I finally managed to call you, can you stop nagging? Okay, I won’t talk to you anymore, I have to go watch a movie later. Goodbye."
Lin Fengying was cut off while speaking. The phone call ended before she finished. Upon recalling that Si Weimin and Yuan Caizhen divorced, she couldn’t help but smile. However, when she turned her head, she saw Si Boyi staring at her. Feeling guilty, she hurriedly changed the subject.
"Xiaohui wants to divorce Song Yu... They just got married not long ago, if people find out about the divorce, wouldn’t they gossip behind our backs?"
Si Boyi frowned, "She didn’t listen to us when they got married, I can’t control them if they want to divorce."
Lin Fengying stammered, "You should be more understanding of Xiaohui. No matter what she does, she’s still your sister. As her older brother, you should be more tolerant and not hold grudges against her."
"Mom, you should worry about my younger uncle’s issue instead of Xiaohui’s. He and his wife were happily married for over a decade. After you two visited, they divorced. Maybe Xiaohui stirred up trouble."
"How can you say that?" Annoyed and embarrassed, Lin Fengying lightly smacked Si Boyi’s back. Si Boyi didn’t retaliate, but his expression didn’t look good.
"Xiaohui is spoiled because of you."
"Let’s stop talking about Xiaohui..." Feeling guilty, Lin Fengying dared not continue and quickly changed the topic: "Yaoyao and your brother have been married for over a year and there’s no sign of pregnancy. She’s probably too skinny and malnourished. As for finding a nanny for Lijuan, just go ahead and do it. I’ll return to the countryside tomorrow and see if there are any traditional remedies that could help Yaoyao."
"Mom, my brother and sister-in-law are living a good life, why are you meddling? Besides, it’s only been a day, where can I find a nanny so quickly? At least wait until I’ve found the nanny before you leave!" Si Boyi was confused by his mother’s sudden change of heart.
Hearing this, Lin Fengying felt wronged again, "Lijuan treats me like an enemy right now. It’s uncomfortable for both of us with me staying here. It’s better to be out of sight, out of mind. Your younger uncle just divorced. He must be feeling terrible right now. If none of us go to him, he will think he’s been forgotten."
Si Boyi retorted: "Mom, is it appropriate for you to be living with your brother-in-law for an extended period?" Even now she’s not worried about village gossip.
Lin Fengying scowled, "What’s inappropriate about it? When Da Niu married Er Niu’s wife, didn’t the villagers keep quiet? I’ve done nothing wrong and have nothing to fear. As long as my conscience is clear, why should I care what others say? Now go find that nanny! I’m going to check on Lijuan and the baby."
"..."
Si Boyi mutely watched Lin Fengying’s retreating figure, his mind a whirl of confusion. Finally, he decided to call Tong Yao.
"Sister-in-law, mom is thinking about going to Kyoto again. She says younger uncle’s divorced and she wants to go there to take care of him and Xiaohui. Seems inappropriate to me, given she’s his sister-in-law and all."
Si Boyi, being conventional in thinking and caring about public perceptions, got very upset when Si Xiaohui and Song Yu ran away to get married. But no matter how unreasonable his mother was, he, as a son, knew he couldn’t argue. So instead he called Tong Yao, hoping to get her opinion.
Tong Yao had already anticipated that Lin Fengying would want to visit upon hearing about Si Weimin’s divorce. That didn’t surprise her at all. Her eyes sparkled with an idea, "Maybe mom is just lonely. Why don’t you find an eligible bachelor in town and set mom up with him?"
Si Boyi felt as if Tong Yao had hit the nail on the head, "Sister-in-law, that’s a great idea." By finding a companion for mom, she wouldn’t need to think about going to her younger brother.
Back when his uncle left, Si Boyi was still young and doesn’t remember much of the aftereffects. But he vividly remembers that he was teased by other kids in the village, so he didn’t want his mother to go to his uncle’s place now.
