Chapter 365: Chapter 365: The Cat Entered the Bedroom?
Tong Yao was contemplating whether to alert Wang Chun or not when she heard the gossipy kitten continue.
[The Dean has a secret lover that he’s been with for over a decade. Recently, she’s been pressuring him to make her his official woman and divorce his wife. The poor man is stressed out of his mind. Better make sure your man keeps his distance.]
[The head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department accepted five pounds of pork from a relative, and secretly performed an abortion for her. The baby was the result of the relative having an affair behind her husband’s back.]
[Nurse Guo wants to have another son, so she’s planning to give her daughter to her infertile sister in the countryside to raise...]
[Wenwen has lost her job. She’s been in a really bad mood lately, crying so much that her eyes are all swollen like light bulbs.]
As juicy as all the gossip was, Tong Yao was particularly intrigued by the news about Deng Wenwen. "Wasn’t Wenwen doing well as a ticket seller? How did she lose her job?" she asked.
[She had a dispute with a sleazy male passenger who was accused of groping her but wouldn’t admit it. The issue was escalated to their superior, but instead of siding with Wenwen, he forced her to apologise. Outraged, Wenwen quit her job.]
The snide cat didn’t have any fond feelings for its former owner Deng Wenwen. She always caused problems and had a terrible temper. The snide cat had to endure a lot of mistreatment from her. The only good thing she did was to give the cat to Tong Yao.
Life was a few notches better living with Tong Yao. It also meant that he could sneak his sweetheart back home when Tong Yao wasn’t around.
"What kind of a boss fails to differentiate right from wrong, and instead sides with the bad guy? Isn’t this encouraging the sleazebag? Does he have porridge for brains?" Tong Yao fumed at the injustice Deng Wenwen suffered, wishing she could give the dirty old man a nice beating on her behalf.
If this had happened a few years ago during a crackdown on inappropriate behavior, this man would be serving several years behind bars now.
[Dean Deng doesn’t know yet...]
The sly cat didn’t finish its sentence when its ears suddenly pricked up. It jumped off the cabinet and bolted to the living room where it curled up in its bed pretending to sleep.
Seeing this, Tong Yao immediately knew Si Chen was back.
Sure enough, Si Chen walked in from outside in no time. He glanced towards the cat bed and strode directly into the room.
"Did the cat go into the bedroom?" he asked.
"How did you know?" Tong Yao was surprised, "Did you grow cat ears?"
She had only heard the door open after the sly cat had run out, she thought there was no way Si Chen could’ve known.
Si Chen glanced at the floor, "There’s cat hair on the floor."
Following his gaze, Tong Yao saw a tuft of cat hair floating on the floor. It must have been left behind when the sly cat ran too fast. "I thought you grew clairvoyant and super-hearing abilities."
Si Chen blandly replied, "As long as one is careful enough, he can be as good as having clairvoyance and super hearing abilities. Everything leaves evidence; it’s just a matter of whether the observer is observant enough to notice."
Sycophantically, Tong Yao replied, "If you had joined the army, you would’ve been an excellent scout."
Si Chen chuckled, "I did consider that idea in the past."
He didn’t continue, but Tong Yao could guess the rest. In their time, joining the army was a competitive endeavor. Every town had limited openings, and there were so many people vying for those spots, it was not easy to get in.
She smiled broadly, "It’s not too bad that you became a doctor. If you had really joined the army, we might have never met. There were so many people chasing after me in school." 𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑝𝘶𝘣.𝑐𝘰𝘮
It was intended to be a joke to lighten the mood, but to her surprise, Si Chen responded seriously, "I know."
Tong Yao was attractive, well-proportioned, and came from a good family, so naturally, she had a lot of suitors.
Before Tong Yaohui suggested that he should marry Tong Yao, he liked her and wanted to protect her along with Tong Yao, but he never dared to harbor any other intentions.
Feeling awkward, Tong Yao quickly changed the subject, "I’d like to soak my feet." "Sit still, I’ll get the water."
It was only a light scrape on her leg, not a huge problem, yet Si Chen handled it as though she had broken her leg. He brought wash water and footbath to her bedside, amusing and overwhelming Tong Yao.
As the weather started to get cold, it was hard for Tong Yao to warm her bed on her own. As soon as Si Chen got into bed, she’d burrow into his arm like a worm, sleeping soundly.
When she woke up in the morning, Si Chen had already left for work, leaving behind a note with instructions for her to stay home. He had even prepared her outfit for the day and left it by the bed. Just as she was stretching lazily from her sleep, she heard the kitten’s sarcastic voice echo in her ear.
[Wow, Doctor Si is normally so taciturn, but he sure takes care of you.]
Giving the kitten an annoyed glance, Tong Yao put on her shoes and stepped out of bed. She bragged, "Who wouldn’t hold such a beautiful wife like me in the palm of their hands!"
The kitten scoffed and darted out for a stroll.
There was already porridge prepared in the kitchen. With the winter cold, the porridge was cooling rapidly. Tong Yao was about to reheat it when she heard a knock on the door. Opening the door, she found a grinning Deng Wenwen holding soy milk and dough sticks.
Her eyes were slightly swollen from a night of crying, though it wasn’t too noticeable.
"Sister Yaoyao, I ran into Dr. Si, he said you scraped your leg and were resting at home. So I brought over some soy milk and fried dough sticks."
Ever since Deng Wenwen stopped having feelings for Si Chen, his attitude toward her had become much warmer, almost brotherly. Initially, she’d found this change awkward, but she’d grown used to it over time.
"Perfect timing, Ah Chen just made some porridge too. Come on in, let’s have breakfast together." Tong Yao led Wenwen inside and was about to reheat the porridge when Wenwen stopped her.
"Sister Yaoyao, why don’t you sit and rest? I’ll go reheat the porridge. I’m already super lucky to be able to taste Dr. Si’s cooking. There’s no way I can allow you, an injured person, serve me. Dr. Si would kill me if he found out."
Wenwen put the fried dough and soy milk on the table, rolled up her sleeves and went into the kitchen.
Soon, the two of them were seated at the table, enjoying breakfast and chatting. Wenwen began by telling Tong Yao about her encounter with the handsy male passenger and how angry she was with the boss.
"Can you believe that idiot boss? When an employee is harassed, it’s bad enough that he didn’t help, but the bloody idiot wouldn’t even allow me to call the police. He wanted me to apologize to that sleazeball! It makes my blood boil just thinking about it. If I’d known what he was like, I would never have taken the job, even if it meant starving on the street. I should have never listened to my mom who told me to take the job. I won’t listen to her about work anymore."
In addition to being groped by a revolting man, she also had to deal with a boss who was completely void of morals. The thought of it was infuriating.
The night before, she’d been so angry and regretful, wishing she had just slapped the man a couple of times and quit then.
